Official Jon Gruden Thread XLVIII

To my volnation family,
I came home from the whole thing with my mom passing (coroner's and funeral home loading her body and trying to find all the pertinent info to take to the FH this morning) and sat down with my laptop, just to get on the board for a little distraction.

I was absolutely overwhelmed with the outpouring of support i received in this thread. absolutely stunned. i cried reading your posts, but it was a different sort of tears than i'd been shedding. i don't know what to say. thank you seems so feeble.

well, gotta go take care of business. dread it. gonna be a long week. we will have some arrangements in SC, then transported to hometown TN for service and burial.

please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

preacherwebb

In my opinion, this is what the Gruden thread is all about; it’s always been about hope, comraderie and the volunteer spirit. You remain in my prayers, preach. And my mom has added your family to her prayer group’s list. 🧡

No there isn't and that was what I was implying a few posts ago about leaking it out. I just don't think it will be a turn down, it will be more along the lines of we haven't talked to Tennessee. With that being said talks happened in 2012 and in 2017, just dont think the narrative will be that.

You could be right, we'll see how it plays out. With that said, somebody has to shut down the rumors to give a "new" coach a chance to be accepted with the fan base. It hasn't happened and "they all" are aware of the hearts desire of the fan base.

Sry Boro, I just hate the let’s beg Brohm crap.

Why beg someone who won’t live up to his end of the deal

If he was that good wouldn’t it be feesable that he should be better than 12-6 at Purdue?

Totally agree...completely underwhelming hire. If we make that unlikely move, I will be sorely disappointed.

It's a hire from the same template we've used the last two times.

Does anyone else think all these names are smokescreens??? I expected smokescreens with Currie, but I guess I didn't expect them from Fulmer.

I wouldn’t have expected this with PF either. Makes me think it could be a really big hire or a really big disappointment.

I don’t know. Phil’s strategy has been leak every meeting and let them know we love them. Hubbs thinks it Steele, Brice is leaning towards Morris and we all believe in Bigfoot. Lol. Personally, I think it’s Miles because my BVS is flaring up and I’m out of my meds. Lol.

Hubbs and Brice have significant BVS and will settle for less.

So what’s the difference between the two?

I don't want to get off the tracks here, so I will make this quick. If records were all that mattered coordinators would never get head coaching jobs. Few coaches could have turned Purdue into a six-win team this year. He's an offensive genius and can develop QB's. What he did with the two QB's at western was nothing short of phenomenal. As I said before he will be at a blue blood in a few years - just hope we aren't opposing him.

Now, enough about that. What time does Gruden sign?

It is about added value, or wins over replacement. Use cfbstats and see how much he improves teams. Use 247 and see how he improves recruiting. I've done the legwork, but won't do it again.

Though I'm not optimistic Phil is a moneyball type of guy. I'm afraid he just wants a good ole boy that runs rock in i formation like it is the 50s. We will see if he has evolved and uses analytics and context.

Brohm may turn out to be a decent coach, but he is unproven at this point. If we are going that route then bring me a VFL. I still believe it's Gruden or Les.

If he trots out Morris, Brohm, or someone less Fulmer and the coach will be burned by the fan base

the fans are going to think (and most already do, vehemently for a lot) what they think about any particular candidate....good and bad.

i think it's probably safe to say that aside from a gruden hire, whoever they trot out there, isn't going to be accepted universally by the fan base.

and that's true pre and post Currie. if anything, i think it may be a tad worse now, because so many have gotten re-energized with Search 2.0.

never said it would be him

Do you think the AD will get an answer from Gruden today, either way ... and if so, and we have a presser tomorrow that points to Gruden, a presser later than tomorrow likely means he said no ?

I agree, one way or another everybody needs closure.

I have a feeling today's regularly scheduled midday meltdown will be epic. The question will be.... is today also the day we receive the 3PM Nugget of all Nuggets and Grumors turn to Gruth.

Nope, he came in and dropped a bomb and left yesterday!

**evening**

You sure? It’s still not showing on his post history. (Sorry if already addressed; endlessly playing catch-up.)

I choose to believe that silence by AtlantaVol and others, awkward silences on MNF, plus mysterious disappearances by certain posters indicates that good news is about to happen.

That’s just me though. I’m an optimist by nature.

I did end up hearing one thing from one of my trusted guys. (However, to be fair no one saw schiano coming outside of haslam).

The plan is to get Gruden to give us a yes or no tomorrow. He knows that’s the deadline. We aren’t going to wait another 1-2 weeks trying to convince him. He either takes this Saban like offer with astronomical amounts of money for him and his assistants or he doesn’t. He told me it’s 50/50. Everyone is cautiously optimistic. Fulmer does have a good relationship with gruden so if it was to ever happen it’s now.

Also told me every big time coach is aware of the type of work that will be required to rebuild TN. Yes we have some big time athletes but the 0-8 in the SEC is not by mistake. The culture will have to be completely rebuilt. Lack of an OL coming into next season. Player development is going to be a 24/7 priority. New offense and defense installed with not the greatest depth or players for said schemes. Next years scheudle is brutal as well.

These are concerns from the big time coaches among some of the up and comers. This is the feedback TN has been given from the potential coaching candidates. Which is why you’ll see he Pruitt’s of the world ask for large money for him and his assistants. For us to win we need to spend big on a Georgia, bama, LSU type staff. TN has been on a down swing and with all of the drama from this year and mediocrity over the last decade...we are going to have to over pay.

Side note he said he HIGHLY doubts it is Steele from what he’s been hearing.

I read the war room from VQ earlier...Steele was the name mentioned bc he’s the lone tn guy on their hot board. However, Hubbs and other mods admitted that there is no front runner.

I realize that I'm way behind but I just read this post and believe there is a lot of truth in it. Let's not candy coat it. From top to bottom our program is a mess right now with the alleged infighting amongst boosters all the way down to the depth and talent of the team itself. There is a major rebuilding that needs to be done and I think there will be a definite period of frustration and struggle we will have to weather before we get anywhere close to where we want to be.

Not many coaches are going to want to take on a job like that without the insurance of a huge contract. The struggle of the rebuild will definitely cause even the hottest of coaches luster to tarnish. Looking at our program's recent history, every coach out there realizes that coming here and turning this around will be a huge gamble and the odds aren't in their favor.

All of this is why my faith in Gruden is all but gone. He has spent a decade enjoying the role of being the hottest "available" coach on the market. I am not sure he wants to risk his legend by taking over our mess right now. I believe he loves Tennessee but not enough to put himself or his family under the scrutiny that would come from taking the job. We have built him up to be a superhero that would equal instant success and he could very well be but there would be very little tolerance for any failure. I am sure he is aware of all of this and I'm afraid that's why he will end up turning us down.

I see us ending up with either a young up and comer looking for his first big job with something to prove or an out of work older veteran who just wants to coach again and isn't really worried about proving anything.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade or sway opinions. This is just where I'm at and hope I am once again dead wrong.
