Pretty much everyone outside of Peyton and Shuler were either quiet or outspoken against the hiring. Shuler later walked his back under the guise of "oh sorry, I didn't know about the baggage".

While I agree with the notion that the fanbase's reaction was a variable in the decision to pull the offer, I don't agree with the way the media is portraying this story. There is much much more to this than we will ever know, and it's unfair/inaccurate for some members of the media to squarely blame the fanbase. That's all I'm sayin...

As fans we never want to admit we have real problems, but after the LSU fiasco last year, we should have known. When they were looking most of the in touch media stated that even though LSU looked like a great job, the inept administration would turn off most top coaches. Their internal guys are just like TENN.

Sticky this thread please so when all the Knoxville and other media types peruse the board for information they will get what is really tugging at the hearts of UT fans.

Didn’t know Shuler walked it back.

I just don’t understand how he was ever even on the radar. For all reasons listed and then add on he was a bully that most of his NFL players and staff hated and if he is even remotely associated with the Sandusky scandal (fairly or not), especially after the sexual lawsuit we just settled.

It just baffles me he was even considered. He would have been number 21 on the list of 20 potential head coaches names I had heard bandied about for our school (for coaching, attitude, and baggage issues combined).

But, this time would be different. The President of the school changed. The athletic director changed. All of the past failure was well documented. It could not be repeated. It would not be repeated. This time it was going to be different.

And then it wasn't.

And the people, who only have their voices, stood up and said "hell no". As many have pointed out, it united this fan base like nothing else in a decade. Everyone agreed. Everyone had enough. "Hell no". In a matter of a few hours, the push back was so strong that those in power had no choice but to listen.

I know that Tennessee fans are catching hell in some places, but I can only put myself in your shoes and say "I get it".

I would add that we live in a conference where any perceived weakness is used to taunt relentlessly. Florida's coach almost 100% certainly didn't get naked on a shark, and yet the questions and comments almost never ceased. You can pick something similar for just about any fan base. After the calamity of the last decade, I just couldn't handle getting ribbed about hiring an alleged accomplice to child rape every time I talked football. Whether it was true is a different question. It was going to follow the program regardless. No thanks.

It's easy to understand if you look at who controls the University and the largest share of the purse strings. This was all Haslam.

But I'm with you. It's just ridiculous.

Nailed it gator. I would add though that there was a legitimate concern about his integrity from his potential role in PSU scandal. His behavior toward players and staff at Tampa reinforced those concerns. The narrative that it was only about us not liking his win-loss record couldn't be more wrong for many of us.

I am shocked by this post that’s hit me right between the eyes. I applaud your post because I believe you are absolutely right. Thank you for waking me up and getting my attention! Now is the time to open the purse and find a GREAT coach.

My only question is, are you really a Gator? If so, how do you know so much about our history and our pain?
