Biggest issue...Why was Greg S the best we could get?

So simple...No coach looking for anything more than a paycheck is willing to bow to the Haslam family. That is the problem and has been the problem, it's not crazy fans. To win in the SEC, the program has to be separated from the family that owns the bottom dwellings Cleveland Browns.

What you just said!!

We don't know exactly what happened but I'm sure some will be in denial if we offered the job to other coaches and they said no. But let's be honest......that's possible.

First, Schiano wasn't a 3rd rate coach. Second, I don't think anyone here, myself included, can claim to know how Currie conducted this coaching search. But some of us are hellbent on acting like we know. "It was the Haslams!" "It was Currie!" "It was all a Gruden smoke screen!" "There was never any search!" "They ignored this coach." "They never reached out to that coach." Yeah. Whole lot of that going around.
You really don't have to be a brain surgeon or a conspiracy loon to figure out the common denominator in the failure over the last decade. Many coaches and ADs have come and gone, but only one name has remained the same. When are people going to wake up?

Because I believe Currie made no good-faith efforts to hire anyone else.

Greg Schiano?

I mean, if we're going to go to the state of Ohio, and pull up some fossil that hasn't been a head coach at the college game since early this decade, why not just go with Jim Tressel?

Geez.

Because Currie was told by Haslam that he was the guy and noone else. Haslam has been in love with him as a coach since he was fired from Tampa and even let the idea of hiring him destroy the Browns front office. The sad part is even he still went with a different option and apparently thought he could use UT to rebuild Schianos reputation as a below average coach and a tyrant with little man syndrome.

Honestly the only reason Haslam let Butch get fired was because he wanted to bring in Schiano. So Schiano was the chose before Lyle was ever fired and why Currie didn't want any outsiders involved in the coaching search. Haslam told him who his guy was and I'm sure there was a nice under the table cash payment for making the hire without even looking at any other options.

You're so good at making up stories. Got any published? ...or is that why you post on VN?

Because Haslam vetted shiano three years ago as a possible HC for the browns. He was reportedly enamored with the guy. The article has been passed around.

Is this what we are now? We can only attract 3rd rate coaches? Now how do we get a step down from that? What's going on with our program?

He's not. He's always been Currie's first and top choice. There are much better options but Currie was dead set on Schiano for some damn reason.

Why would ANYONE think that just because Currie liked Schiano that means he's the best UT could get?

I think that he was the top target the entire time personally. Currie played haslams card and screwed the pooch, now he's in real trouble.

Here’s the the thing that gets me. Currie, Haslam and all the others that had any input to this decision knew what coaches were out there to go get. A full compliment of rock stars and experienced coaches alike. And that brain trust over there on The Hill pulled Schiano out of their @$$ like they thought they were David Copperfield doing a magic show and wanted to act like they pulled the biggest coup versus all of our rivals! Sad thing is, they had no clue how stupid that was going to look from a coaching standpoint alone, much less the Penn State/Sandusky connection. No, this isn’t the best we could get! This is stupid doing what stupid has done over there for ten years now.

Maybe jus maybe Tennessee began this toxic envoirment by getting rid of one of its own, Fulmer.. somewhat gotta agree with him
Getting rid of someone who isn't getting the job done isn't
"toxic".

Keeping someone who isn't getting the job done... IS toxic.

Just because they have $$ and are in positions of power doesn't mean they know what they are doing. This is obvious!!

FYP

He's had Schiano boner that hasn't gone down since 2013.

Currie was the spineless tool that jumped at Jimmy's pledge.
Everything points to Haslam being ran out of town. Who has the stones to start the movement. If 100 people showed up today it would go viral and he'd be gone by the end of the week!

The program was clearly known as an "underachiever" during Fulmer's last years. Every coach in the country knew he put it on cruise after 1998.
