*At this point* I'm ok with a really respected coordinator or a lower tier guy that can actually coach.

Dooley and Butch coming from lower tiers wasn't the main issue. Dooley was losing there and Jones was mediocre. It translated.

If (big if) we go that way, just find one that is an actual winner, with his own team etc. You can identify great coaching when you see it. Just wish some VN members were choosing, I trust many of you more.

"Big, expensive, explosive"
-John Currie

That's what we were told right?

Yep. But that was never the intention, apparently. I’m about to give watching and supporting this team as much devotion as our admin does. I don’t say this lightly as I am big on staying committed but a lack of ambition and the consistent letdown by our admin is akin to a child hoping that an abusive parent will change because they love them. The leadership and the University of Tennessee give absolutely 0 f**ks about our fan base.

He would get a raise. 100%.

He's also almost 60 and his only coaching stint went about as poorly as possible, so perhaps he doesn't want to go down that road again?

It's just not black and white. The "he wouldn't make a lateral move from there to here" logic doesn't always work.

Fine, but somebody asked why Frost is different. Frost is clearly different.

It's my understanding that Blackburn and Gruden have a relationship that goes back to their time together at UT in the mid-80's and Blackburn was quoted in the TFP as saying Gruden was definitely a viable option and would listen.

David Blackburn: Jon Gruden a viable option to coach Vols, would listen to offer | Times Free Press

I'm under the impression that we have some boosters who have always wanted Gruden but for whatever reason our administration has never appeared all that interested.

So, in hindsight if Blackburn was hired as our AD, could Gruden legitimately be our new coach? Is this something the Haslam's saw coming before it happened and wanted Currie?

If so, I am sick at this thought. Absolutely sick.

I think we are stuck in a no man's land where guys who know they aren't going to win over the fanbase immediately will stay home. They don't want to walk into a hornet's nest. And more proven hires will be wary as well. We will probably end up overpaying out the ass for someone.

No we will get the cheapest up and comer we can find. For all the talk about spending big, we are still in dollar store mode.

Do you think that Blackburn thinks Gruden would be interested but we never offer?

I think this has probably played out just like last time. I think a group of boosters brought Gruden to table on their own and Big Jim and company nixed it. Or they got it close and Currie couldn't/Wouldn't bring it home.

Wtf?

Guy does something completely legal (although frowned upon) in a game of football and that shows that he’s capable of covering up child rape?

I hope I’m just reading that the wrong way.

shows he is morally deficient also, told players to take both Mannings out at their knees when trying to run out the clock late but keep trying to show this pos in a good light

I want to wake up tomorrow to news of a noon press conference. At said press conference, I want it announced by the president that Currie has been fired and that Phil Fulmer will be the new athletic director. I then want to hear word that TN is in serious discussions with Tee Martin and see him hired before the end of the week.

This isn't hard.

I know he wouldn’t have been exciting initially but you hire Tee Martin now and he will have resounding support imo. Support from fans, definitely former players, and boosters who remember 98.

This dumb circus (trying not to curse) now has politicians involved and a lot of our decision makers with a mountain of egg to wipe off. There will be a lot of talking, a lot of vetting, and a lot of approvals before anyone is hired. While that is good it will slow this down to a crawl. Expect someone with UT ties or a fairly clean up and comer.

So he really hadn't changed after all. Should have believed Larry back when the hire was made when he basically said Currie was an arrogant prick who turned his nose up at just about everyone.

I tried to say this too in October. Was mocked.

The reason they do it is because the fan base still supports it. When the money starts to dry up thing will change and not before. Most of the people iin this board care more about the success of the program than these idiots running it.

I just can't take this much longer. Stressed out over it. Get it done. Fire Currie, hire Phil as AD, Tee as HC, and lets please win some games. This could be over by Tuesday.

Or Gruden turned us down two weeks ago when all this plan b shizz started.

Have heard it was Big Jim. They were concerned about the optics re: Bill becoming UT system President with Schiano under his jurisdiction.

Oh, well, we certainly wouldn't want anything that might make the Haslams look bad. The university and the state of Tennessee does exist for their amusement, after all.
