And without 5 turnovers by the players, they probably win by 2 tds. Not every loss is always on the coaches. That's what a lot of our fan base doesn't seem to understand. Mullen put his team in position to win. The players didn't hold up their end
The difference is that Jones couldnt beat anybody with 4 and 5 star players (his player development was awful), with great resources (second most profitable football program in the country last year, $70mm) while playing in an awful SECe division.....vs Mullen who was battling the big boys with 2 and 3 star players (his player development has been very good), at the 2nd worst SEC program, with virtually no resources (not in the top 20 in profits, less than $28mm) while playing in the most difficult division in college football.
Would Mullen be a homerun hire for us? No idea, I have my doubts. But given his track record both as Florida's OC and Miss States HC, I think theres little to no doubt that hed do much better at Tennessee than Sgt Carter did....theres zero doubt in my mind.
This is my last response cause Im tired bud but Ive enjoyed our debate. I havent seen anything that would make me think Dan Mullen could beat Kirby smart once a year or Nick Saban twice a year to get us an SEC championship not to mention LSU/ATM/Auburn every few years. So if he cant win an SEC championship here I dont want to even consider him. Weve been terrible over a decade now so no more pretty good coach hires for me. Either hire a proven power 5 conference/national championship winner, or hire Scott Frost from the up and comer pool of coaches.
Yep. Its all on the coaches. I think ill let my kids use that excuse the next time they fail a test. Ill just have them tell the teacher its their fault for not "teaching" good enough. Its not her fault she didn't study or pay attention in class...

God we could do soooo much better than Dan freakin Mullen.
It's depressing knowing that this site has so many that can't recognize a good coach at a lower tier school.
The posters on here and TN fans in general are insane."I WILL ONLY ACCEPT A COACH THAT WINS 12 GAMES A YEAR, NO LESS.IF THEY CAN'T BEAT BAMA THEN THEY SUCK. WOW THEY HAD A BAD YEAR, NEXT. WOW A COACH THAT WAS MEDIOCRE IN THE NFL, WANT."
While Tennessee is a more attractive job than most,it's not a top tier program like before so those big "sure thing" coaches aren't going to leave their top programs.

No, that's you. You want to carry water for guys who have losing records in games that really county, be my guest. But don't think for a minute that you're supporting anything remotely intelligent or have a basis for telling others they are on a lesser plane than you.
Quick, name one, one, real accomplishment by Dan Mullen and, don't give me the "it's really hard to win at MSU" crap. He isn't winning and it's been going on for nearly ten years.
And, you have the balls to tell people they are dumb for realizing this plainly obvious fact? Amazing.

Turned a slow 6'0", 250-pound quarterback at Bowling Green named Josh Harris into an NFL draft pick.
Turned a two-star QB recruit at Utah into a Heisman finalist and the 1st overall pick in the NFL Draft - beating out Aaron Rodgers as the top QB in the draft class as well
Turned an underachieving QB in Chris Leak, who was on the verge of transferring away, into a national champion starter
Turned Tim Tebow into a Heisman winner, a national champion, and a 1st-round pick
Turned a mid-level recruit in Dak Prescott into a two-time All-SEC pick, an NFL draft pick, and the toast of Dallas
Took Mississippi State to the first #1 ranking in the history of the program
