Dan Mullen thread (merged)

Comparing apples to oranges.

One of them is currently coaching and the other one is not.

ESPN is also fixing to have instant layoffs so there’s no sure thing Gruden will be making more money on Monday Night Football than he would coaching UT if it’s true that we’ve offered him 10 Million.

Also, Gruden hasn’t denied anything while Mullen has pretty much told his team he’ll be at MSU next year.

Mullen is treated like a king for getting average results so not sure why he’d come to UT where expectations like that would get you fired.

it's ironic, not a comparison.

Miles
Schiano
Norvell or Taggart

In that order if you take those named away

Edit I'd prob put Taggart over Norvell

He did great at WKU & South Florida
And he would bring an outstanding staff

Miles is better than people give him credit for. I would not be disappointed in that hire. Just have to keep an eye on his OC.

Norvell worries me a bit. It feels like it could be Butch 2.0 in the fact he stepped into a situation Fuente built. I could be wrong.

Taggart is a good coach, but not sure he's shown anything to make me think he's better than Mullen.

Alabama has trailed in a game at any point just 5 times this season -- only 29 offensive snaps -- in three different games. That's 3.8 percent of the 747 offensive snaps taken.

Who/which “terrible coaches” have had a lead on Saban this season? For how long? And what is their “awful” coaching record?

1. For 2:08 vs Florida St...Jimbo Fisher has won a national title at Fla St and has a career record of 82-23

2. For 0:13 vs Texas A&M.....Kevin Sumlin has a career head coaching record of 86-42

3. For 1:54 vs Miss. St....Dan Mullen has a career head coaching record of 69-45

4. For 1:13 vs Miss. St.....Dan Mullen has a career head coaching record of 69-45

5.For 12:14 vs Miss. St....Dan Mullen has a career head coaching record of 69-45

In 8 years Mullen has finished 2nd 1 time, 4th 2 times and 5th 5 times.

And for all the naysayers about Mullen recruiting ability, he currently has the #13 class which is good for 3rd best in SEC.

I’ve noticed the lack of recruiting ability narrative has toned down.

Hmmm, then why all the sudden does Mullen have no talent to work with since he’s in the SEC West?

No the issue has been people saying he doesn't get good recruits there and that's why he is so bad vs the top 25.

I've said all along he gets good recruits, he is just not a good football coach. And that's why he is so bad vs the top 25.

Thanks for posting and clearing up that he does get good players. He just can't coach them to wins vs the top 25.

It’s what happens when you even out competent coaching, player development, and recruiting.

Butch only made recruiting look hard because he was exposed as a fraud of a coach. Recruiting is only thing he could do. Bet you don’t see Mullen needing a 6 figure Mercedes or 5 figure watch collection to get recruits.

This 2018 class he’s building will be his highest ranked class he will ever have at MSU. while it’s not all the way equal, this roster is the closest to even talent other rosters in the West not named Bama.

If he can do this at MSU for his upcoming class, he can easily match, if not beat, any ranking Butch ever had.

I’m sorry when every media outlet has to take 20 minutes to convince me Mullen is a good hire... I’ll pass. A slam dunk hire is someone that doesn’t need more than their name mentioned to be who this fan base deserves

In the Kiffin vs Mullen poll, Kiffin is winning. That should tell everyone how popular Mullen really is. I think that Mullen would divide the fanbase. And we'd be handcuffed with his high salary, Butch's buyout, and I'm sure that Mullen has a high buyout at MSU.

Mullen is an X and O’s and is a nerd. Kiffin is an X and O’s and is a prick. Doesn’t change the fact that both are great game coaches.

So it’s taken him 9 years to build a recruiting class TN would be proud of?

Another reason he’s a big no. And don’t give me bull about how he could recruit so much better at UT. We saw it with Dooley- TN no longer recruits itself.

Saban drives the same car Butch did, btw...

Once again, context. Don’t be silly. You are now saying UT and MSU’s recruiting environment are equal.

That’s a funny.

Why’s it so hard for people to understand Mullen just isn’t a good recruiter? He’s essentially said it himself. It doesn’t mean he’s a bad coach, but to think he’s going to come to TN and all of a sudden be a great recruiter just because he’s at TN is a huge fallacy.

So you are saying Tennessee has the chance to hire someone who at some point led in a game vs Bama........

Holy heck........sign us up!

Butch wasn’t a great coach yet he got top classes every year.

Mullen is a very good coach and is at a school that doesn’t sell itself like Tennessee.

The fact you can’t see that any coach will be able to recruit here shows two things: either your football IQ is very low or you are just that much of a Butch Lover.

Tennessee is an easier school to recruit for. That’s not debatable but you still have to be a good recruiter. CBJ was clearly better than CDD.

I’m hopeful we can land a CBJ level of recruiter who can also hold his own on game day.
I do not believe Mullen is that guy.

No one has said he has no talent. What those who like Mullen have said is the amount of talent he has is far below the talent level of the recruiting heavyweights in the West.

If we had just won the games we were supposed to the last two years we would be just fine. But we lost to KY, Vandy, SC, Florida, etc. Or almost as bad, barely beat terrible teams Umass etc.

I think that Mullen would not lose those games.

If you want a CBJ level recruiter, you will get a very poor talent developer and horrible gameday coach. Butch put all his eggs in the recruiting basket. Any competent gameday coach could recruit top classes here without the big effort Butch put in.

I agree that Mullen would be a step up from Butch, but he probably would've dropped every game against a ranked team. He's really bad in big games. I'm not convinced that he would beat UF.

Keep in mind that Mullen has barely beaten UMass two years in a row. He actually lost to South Alabama.
