Official Gruden Thread 39

If news of an interview with someone else doesn't come out today or tomorrow bet your ass Gruden is in the bag.

As we’ve noted on the board throughout the last few days, we expect Tennessee to really ramp up its search in the coming days, and the timing to formally talk to Mullen is the earliest for any current head coach currently employed. Mississippi State plays on Thanksgiving, meaning Tennessee could get a face-to-face with Mullen on Friday. This is something we’ll follow very closely over the next few days.

this would be ridiculous.

Tennessee does not need to be in the supporting cast of the "harbaugh brothers" coaching story.

besides, think about this.

this next hire could be the most important in Vols football history and it has to be not just a good coach --- it damn sure has to be the RIGHT coach.

John Harbaugh does not fit at UT.

I doubt that the story he is interested is true, but if he was, what would be wrong with John Harbaugh? He's won a Super Bowl Ring as a coach - like Gruden. His win loss record in the NFL is better than Gruden. His playoff win loss percent is better than Gruden with more games. Not sure where this doesn't fit at UT without quoting ill defined intangibles.

What fits at UT at this point is a proven winner in the Power 5 or NFL as a head coach. Pay for winners. Everything else is noise.

An example?

An example of expectation management in high-profile job searches? Man, if you haven't seen this many times over the years yourself, you really haven't been paying attention.

But sure, since you need the help, here's one from just last month:

Ole Miss Athletic Director Ross Bjork contradicts report, says he's 'not interested' in Nebraska A.D. opening | Big Red Today blog | omaha.com

This is about an AD search, not a head coach search, but it's the same animal: expectation management.

Now don't get pedantic and complain that "this isn't about a head coach" or "this isn't recent enough" or "this isn't about Tennessee, it's some other place."

Expectation management is expectation management, and it happens all the time.

How many time does it have to be said. Even Freak himself said this over and over. This is the Jon Gruden thread! Talk of other candidates is in the other threads! We are Gruden 100% in here until Currie's ass is at the podium introducing someone else. Then we'll still be Gruden in this thread!

So please....STFU and GTFO with all the BS about other coaches not named Jon Mother Freakin Gruden!

If the next HC isn't Jon Gruden, the most important attribute the next HC must have is thick skin. Thick skin to survive in the Knoxville fishbowl. Thick skin to survive in the SEC fishbowl. Thick skin to survive not being Jon Gruden. That probably eliminates many of these supposed candidates, IMO, leaving the following:

John Harbaugh
Mike Gundy
Chip Kelly
Jimbo Fisher
Les Miles
Gary Patterson
Lane Kiffin

Out of that pool, who are the realistic options? I'm not asking who we like or want, but which of those might actually come to Tennessee.

John Harbaugh: Not sure if the rumors of him reaching out are true or not. Would be a splash hire but something tells me the rumors are exactly that.

Mike Gundy: Again nothing makes me think he would come to UT. We already got him one raise.....

Chip Kelly: UF or UCLA. I lean my opinion he leaves the Gators at the altar and goes Bruins

Jimbo Fisher: Possibly but not likely imo

Les Miles: I think Les would jump at the chance but not sure UT would offer him very high on the list.

Gary Patterson: Lots of rumors about him initiating contact with UT circulating a while back. May just be rumors but would be a good fit and a GREAT hire imo.

Lane Kiffin: I would be happy to take him back in a heartbeat under the right terms, with some UT blood on staff and on a short leash until proving he can run the program without constant oversight. I have always said if the main reason people are pissed is that he left (I know I know, how he left) then how can it be a bad decision to bring him back?

Curries most important job right now is the football hire. Everything else pairs in comparison. With the amount of pressure on him to get this right, I doubt he goes running off to the Bahamas if he didn't already have something lined up

If he did, he's either a complete idiot or he's folded under the pressure.

"Jimmy Hyams, interviewed this morning on 104.5 Nashville, said not to expect anything about our new HC until after the SEC Championship Game. He said Currie is going to The Virgin Islands with the men's basketball team all this week. Take that for what it's worth vis-a-vis the hiring process."..."Don't believe anything unless it comes from me"..Currie

It's because Hyams doesn't know the difference between the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.

Mullen and Tennessee won’t go together like Mullen and Florida will never go together again.

It’s not because he won’t do well
It’s not because he couldn’t handle it
It’s because it’s not his choice

The basketball team is going to Paradise Island, Bahamas. Bahama is a soverign country and not part of the Virgin Islands. Jimmy Hyams is wrong again, as usual.

Is it really that hard to understand?

I BELIEVE right now that Gruden would be a successful coach, so I will support him from day 1.

If Gruden ends up not being good, my support for him will diminish over time.

I DO NOT BELIEVE Mullen, Frost, Norvell, ect would be good coaches, so I will not support them from day 1.

If they end up being good, my support for them will increase over time.

We don't know for a fact that ANYONE will be successful. Right now, all we have is our own perception. My perception is that Gruden is our best option.

THIS. ALL. DAY. I'm so aggravated over this whole debacle, that I almost want to quit. :banghead2:

The only significance 10 Dec has in the world of Tennessee football is that it's 10 days before the start of the early signing window (20-22 Dec).

It is not tied to the end of our season (25 Nov). It is not tied to the end of the SEC season/CG (2 Dec). It is not tied to the end of the fall semester (classes end 5 Dec, exams 7-14 Dec, winter commencement 15 Dec).

It is simply a "not later than" date that someone pulled out of their 4th point of contact, Doug Mathews heard, and repeated on air.

That's it. Zero significance in the coaching hunt beyond that.

The only significance is that is the date Currie is telling recruits and their parents that he will have a coach in place by, no later than etc... The date itself is more of a "On or before" thing than a date carrying special meaning.

The irrational Vol fan in me thinks that Currie is in way over his head if he goes with the basketball team and doesn't have a coach already locked in.

The rational Vol fan in me knows that you can work on your computer, just like you are in your office through a VPN, if the coaching search is still going on. The downside to this version of the story would be no face to face meetings can be conducted and Gruden probably isn't the guy.

Don’t know how this will all end but I will state this as fact. When it is over the next time I see Jimmy H I am going to have a few things to say to him. If I have availability to attend the press conference when I am notified I know I will see him there. I try really hard not to dismiss people or be disrespectful. the shear arrogance he has treated people with especially the callers that allow him a living has pushed me over the edge. I don’t care who the coach is Jimmy needs a lesson in humility and being respectful to others.

There are a few NFL head coaches that will be unemployed soon. You want Hue Jackson? Ben McAdoo? Doug Marrone? Marvin Lewis? Chuck Pagano? I would take Bruce Arians, but he probably stays for another year.

Then there's the currently unemployed NFL coaches. Parcells? Cowher? Billick? Mariucci?

It's because Hyams doesn't know the difference between the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.

Yep: Bahamas are off the coast of FL. USVI are off the coast of Puerto Rico
