If this forum is a poll, and most anyone other than JG is hired then on 09/08/18 (first home game) Neyland will have about 10 people there to support OUR team

Uhh, remember what happened when VN started the "Empty Neyland" movement for the Southern Miss game?

97% chance a coach is announced by next Tuesday? May want to re-calibrate that machine. Multiple people have said recruits are being told to expect a coach by Dec. 10.

Already debunked the 10 December rumor. It has no meaning.

Calibration on my guess-o-meter is fine. :good!:

Gruden was never coming, and if we don’t get a coach like Mullen it will be much worse haha. You guys need a dose of reality. We will be finishing our worst season in history come Saturday and Currie will announce someone much worse than Mullen sometime after that.

Where's that middle finger emoji when I need it?

I think we're basically saying the same thing.

There is a difference in supporting the hiring process and/or results (your definition of "support" above), and supporting the coach ("give anyone a chance" as you stated above).

I mean, does it make a difference if I say I'm not giving him a chance? If I call Currie and say "No, I don't want this one" do you think he would fire him and start over?

I have no choice but to give them a chance. At the end of the day, my opinion means nothing.

We could bring back Dooley and there would be nothing I could do about it... But if we brought him back and he won a National Championship in year 1, I would probably get back on board with him.

Here is a thought. I’m all in on Gruden being the next head coach. But as each day passes I have began to wonder . Do we want a coach that wants to be here or someone that has to be begged?

No begging going on. Contract is in hand now and is what it is. Gruden just needs to put ink to paper to finalize. Currie being in the Bahamas with B Ball team tells me he's sure he has his guy now, otherwise the assistants AD or some other smuck would be there. Football runs the AD dept. and is the #1 priority.

Soon!

A big healthy dose of STFU and GTFO!

That would be appropriate. Not because Gruden is not the coach, but because of how this thing has been mishandled for the last decade.

When has an AD ever come out and said who they aren't pursuing?

Many times, over the years. Any time there's an unrealistic fan base expectation, smart ADs immediately quash them and get the fan base pointed in a more realistic direction.

It's called expectation management, and it happens all the time, in all walks of life. Including the sports world.

Let me first say I still believe Jon Gruden will be the next coach. There's reason to doubt that, and I've never claimed it as a 100% fact, but I trust where I've heard this.

Secondly, let me say that if it was not Gruden, I think Mullen is a solid hire. Not going to go through all the reasons why, but he can develop talent and if he surrounded himself with great recruiters, could be a great fit.

But lastly, I think there is VERY little chance Mullen leaves MSU for ANY job. He's comfortable there. The expectations are low. He's 1 year away from being their all-time winningest coach. 7-8 wins a year and they'll build a statue of him. He could stay there another 10 years at $5M or so. Would he really trade that to go somewhere he could make a little more, but also may only survive 3-5 years? Doubt it. He loves Starkville. His family loves Starkville. He's staying put.

In the words of Clay Travis: Dan Mullen is 33-38 in the SEC in his career. And eight of those wins are Kentucky. So he’s 25-37 in the SEC minus Kentucky.

He is not splashy enough to back up a $300+ million stadium reno

I don't know...pick one.

"We have reached out to Jon Gruden, but the interest is not there."

"We understand the fans' desires and wishes, but we have to base the hire on the reality in which we find ourselves."

"We want a proven coach with college head coaching experience."

"We could not come to terms with Jon Gruden, we are moving on to plan B."

"Jon Gruden was never at the top of our list, but we gave him serious consideration."

"Our next hire will be someone with a proven college resume."

The fact that nothing has been said speaks volumes. Silence can be deafening.

Currie said the next time you hear from him will be when he makes a hire and I would not expect him to go back on that. With all the flirting and teasing I think any news should come from Gruden or through his agent by proxy. Jmo.

I do not follow anyone blindly. I have no "duty" to follow something I disagree with. Neither do you.

Furthermore....if we don't get this hire right, the next one won't matter.

Amen.. The ONLY duty I have is to the well being of my family..

If the next HC isn't Jon Gruden, the most important attribute the next HC must have is thick skin. Thick skin to survive in the Knoxville fishbowl. Thick skin to survive in the SEC fishbowl. Thick skin to survive not being Jon Gruden. That probably eliminates many of these supposed candidates, IMO, leaving the following:

John Harbaugh
Mike Gundy
Chip Kelly
Jimbo Fisher
Les Miles
Gary Patterson
Lane Kiffin

Out of that pool, who are the realistic options? I'm not asking who we like or want, but which of those might actually come to Tennessee.

It may not in reality end up being Gruden, but I WILL NOT support a Mullen, Norvell, Campbell, Frost, Durkin type hire.

I. Won't. Do. It.

Sorry, I will reignite the apathy that the dismissal of Butch quenched, and move forward being just a football fan. I love my University, this City, and this State, but will not support what I feel to be another half-effort at hiring a lackluster coach.

They need to understand, the longer it takes to make a move to return us to some type of prominence, the longer it will take to garner the type of fan-support they desire.

Sorry for the self-important, overwrought personal rant. This is the last I'll say on the matter....it doesn't have to be my choice of coach, but it better be worthy.

I hope our AD and BOTs read your post. Believe 97% of VN agrees with you. ANYTHING other than Gruden becoming our HC will be a Catastrophic Disaster.
