Doyle, the proof of the error in your thinking is this: expectation management.
The UT administration are not dumb, and they're not blind. They know that the fan base are excited about Gruden. And they know that disappointment from not getting Jon will be a powerful, and maybe destructive, reaction. Far, far better to dissipate that reaction early than late. Do not give it time to grow further. And especially do not allow it to come just when the announcement of the real coach is being made.
They know all that.
They haven't said a word.
That's as close as you can get to proof that Gruden is still in play. He may be a lock, or it may still be a negotiation, but it is certain that he's still in play.
No question about it.
okay, sorry for the ugly quotes here, but the quote button is out of commission at the moment, so here's a line of quotes you and i had last night:
you said:
Honestly Im still at 50/50. A lot of things are in play but I really feel if it doesnt work it is on him not us. I also believe that if it is not him that we will be ok. I am honestly not worried at this point in the process.
I asked:
okay, just to kick back and forth, by "we will be okay" do you mean a mullen, campbell, norvelle type hire?
you replied:
I would not be pleased with those names. I dont think they will give us what we need. I think we need a statement hire to show we mean business.
now you are saying mullen would be "a solid hire."
so, he'd be a solid hire, but one you'd not be pleased with, one that would not give us what we need.
i'm confused. not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand.
Pretty comparable to Franklin at Vandy. What's he done at PSU?
I like CP at Washington, Venables wouldn't make me wretch. Les Miles would be worthy....a lot of people poo-poo that idea, but he did nothing but win 10-11 games, compete for the SEC and win a Natty. He knows the SEC landscape. With a worthy set of coordinators he could be special here. He's certainly more accomplished than Mullen and the rest of the squad of mediocrity.
Sure, we'd all get on board with Harbaugh. But let's use some common sense, folks. Harbaugh is in the midst of trying to make the playoffs in the NFL right now. Do you REALLY think he's going to quit mid-season and become the head coach at UT? Currie said we'll have a coach by Dec. 20 or UT will have a new AD.
We'd all love it, but come on. There's a higher chance Brady Hoke is the HC next year.
100% agree. It has been allowed to progress to Grunden or Bust status. Why in the world would that be allowed? Only one answer makes any sense.
Yeah...that reasoning worked great with the last two coaches we hired. For me, that is a great parallel. The people who think that being an 8-win coach at State directly translates to being a (dsisppointing) 8-win coach at Tennessee are as hopelessly lost as the people saying that Gruden was a .500 coach in the NFL, so he won't succeed at Tennessee.
NFL Gruden and Tennessee Gruden are playing two entirely different games. State Mullen and Tennessee Mullen are, at the very least, playing with two different hands.
MSU is at a terrible disadvantage in the sense of competing with a bigger instate school, terrible location, competing with Bama, Auburn, and LSU annually, and limited resources. Tennessee is the state's flagship program, has an improving instate talent base, unlimited resources, and a much more attractive physical location. And they currently compete in an easier division.
The idea that Mullen can't show better results with more/better resources is a little silly. He's done more at MSU, and against stiffer competition, than any other coach there in the last 35 years. He has five 8-win seasons in nine years. Before him, you have to go back to 1982 to come up with five 8-win seasons.
Everyone has their own opinion and I certainly have mine and also agree that they should be allowed to have theirs...
Having said That: I refuse to entertain any other candidate for head coach at the University of Tennessee as long as Gruden is in play.... and I see no evidence nor do I hear any that indicates (other that some posters speculation) that Gruden is out!
Gruden to the HILL!
