agree 100%...low expectations in Memphis and they are in a bad conference..Go to a bowl game and you are hired for life in Memphis...
WAY to BIG a stage in Knoxville for him...
GBO

Seems like we've seen that story before.

After Gruden, Harbaugh would be my second choice. Could totally get on board with him.

If it's not Gruden, this fanbase will not recover for a long, long time. There will be fractured support for whoever the new coach is. That would be Currie's or Gruden's fault (or both) for stringing this out so long. It it is Gruden, then no problem. I'm on the Gruden train, even if it leaves town. Just can't stand any more mediocrity or disappointment. Enough is enough.

I think the fever pitch of the fan base has been to loud and it has been allowed to go on to long to temper any excitement.... The recruits have already heard ... you can't put the toothpaste back into the tube...

I believe we ARE at Gruden or Bust already!... I see no other alternative for Currie at this point

This ... even if you kill the grumors now you still will have weeks and weeks of fall out before you could expect any real sign of exceptance .

100% agree. It has been allowed to progress to Grunden or Bust status. Why in the world would that be allowed? Only one answer makes any sense.

A name isn't a home run hire, a home run hire is someone who comes in and wins ball games and championships...No matter what that name may be.

Thanks for stating the obvious. Do you think that was profound? Do you think people don't care if the person wins when they get here?

Let me first say I still believe Jon Gruden will be the next coach. There's reason to doubt that, and I've never claimed it as a 100% fact, but I trust where I've heard this.

Secondly, let me say that if it was not Gruden, I think Mullen is a solid hire. Not going to go through all the reasons why, but he can develop talent and if he surrounded himself with great recruiters, could be a great fit.

But lastly, I think there is VERY little chance Mullen leaves MSU for ANY job. He's comfortable there. The expectations are low. He's 1 year away from being their all-time winningest coach. 7-8 wins a year and they'll build a statue of him. He could stay there another 10 years at $5M or so. Would he really trade that to go somewhere he could make a little more, but also may only survive 3-5 years? Doubt it. He loves Starkville. His family loves Starkville. He's staying put.

okay, sorry for the ugly quotes here, but the quote button is out of commission at the moment, so here's a line of quotes you and i had last night:

you said:
Honestly I’m still at 50/50. A lot of things are in play but I really feel if it doesn’t work it is on him not us. I also believe that if it is not him that we will be ok. I am honestly not worried at this point in the process.

I asked:
okay, just to kick back and forth, by "we will be okay" do you mean a mullen, campbell, norvelle type hire?

you replied:
I would not be pleased with those names. I don’t think they will give us what we need. I think we need a statement hire to show we mean business.

now you are saying mullen would be "a solid hire."
so, he'd be a solid hire, but one you'd not be pleased with, one that would not give us what we need.

i'm confused. not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand.

So I was just sent this from a family member who is at Beaty Chevrolet this morning. It’s a Corvette C7 Z06. They’re either trolling or know something... it’s an $80,000 car.

It may just be me...but I don't see the connection from what you posted.

I would not at ALL be surprised to hear something in the next 48 hours putting the Gruden talk to rest and tempering the expectations of the fan base that are convinced he is coming and setting the stage for the actual hire. Some will love it, some will hate it but that is true with any hire. I know of at least one recruits dad who has been told, directly from "Dr. Currie" as he said, a hire will be announced on or before December 10th (probably before) and to not listen to the Gruden talk in the media and that we will be getting a top notch coach that knows how to win in the SEC. (Didn't say the name but sounds a LOT like Dan Mullen)

The AD knows what is going on and hears all the call ins and the fact you cannot hear the word Tennessee mentioned in a broadcast without the mention of Gruden. It has reached a level of belief that has taken on a life of its own. The LAST thing they want is for recruits to be expecting a hire that looks like it is not going to come to fruition.

At this point they know they have to address it as an official hire draws near imo. They cannot announce Mullen (Most likely imo), Patterson (possible but not super likely) or Norvell (vomit, not likely I HOPE) without first tempering fan expectations.

Mullen does not know how to win in the SEC. Sorry.

You consider Harbough mediocrity?

Don't think for 1 second that Norvell would't jump at the opportunity to come to Tennessee. He'd be up on I-40 givin er hell all the way to Knoxville if he thought he had a shot.

There was a random out of the blue tweet yesterday from a Chattanooga Times Free press reporter:

Twitter

So THIS is where we're getting that John Harbaugh "reached out to UT"? A writer in Cleveland, TN with a tweet that says UT and Harbaugh are on a crash course. That says NOTHING about Harbaugh reaching out.

A name isn't a home run hire, a home run hire is someone who comes in and wins ball games and championships...No matter what that name may be.

Don't totally disagree. However, look at Alabama for comparison. They were very mediocre before Saban's arrival.

Their talent pool was above average based on name and tradition alone. Shula couldn't recruit well. So, when the decision was made to move on from Shula, their first choice was Rodriguez who had "in principal" agreed to be their coach before the last minute sorry, but no.

Enter Saban who coming back from the NFL was a rock star hire. Instant name recognition and within 2 years, 4 and 5 star talent lined up out the door. How did that go for them as winning ball games and championships?

This is where my real push for Gruden is. Our cupboards are painfully thin. They need serious stocking and in a hurry or we're in for another long haul rebuild even if the coach is a "solid" hire.

Gruden is that current rock star hire that high school kids know and, my guess is, would want to play for - immediately. With the right assistants, and a fully stocked talent pool, then there is the secret for a quick rise.
