The Trey Dean stuff makes me believe that Currie told him more than just "be patient because I'm going to hire a great coach."

"Great coach" huh? Currie better back it up. There aren't many guys that fit that category. Certainly not Mullen, Frost, or Taggart. You can consider them good but definitely not great.

Alright, with the staff being up in the air now going forward. If you could retain two coaches on the current staff, and only two, who would it be if anyone? I'm going with Coach G and Warren.

Shoop and G. Coach G should have been named interim coach IMO

SC leads the Pac 12 in offense and are averaging 500 yards and 36 points a game. They are 13th in the nation in total offense. They haven't been bad on offense. Defense has been their problem, they are down in the 70's in total D.

Thanks for this. I haven’t watched them

I'm thinking he told him more than what was quoted.

Not necessarily a name drop, but "I'm hiring a great coach and the deal is almost/already done. Just be patient for another week or two and you'll see" or something like that.

Nah. These are impressionable kids who have had their mind on coming to UT for a long time. All it took was Currie calling them and telling them to be patient. He told them he would make a great hire. No matter who he hires he's gonna stand by it being a great hire.

I don't think he told them "deal is almost/already done." It would leak and he can accomplish what he needed to accomplish by instilling confidence they would make a great hire soon.

You think you have to use the contraction You're instead of you are shows me everything I need to know girl. That's a formality.
I can hear you mouth breathing from here.

What wit you have. You must read a lot (of Mad Magazine).

Still standing on the diving board arms out waist bent want to jump but still remembering all the belly flops and people saying, "oh its for real this time. You will get it right come on jump."

Impressionable goes both ways, though. Right now UT looks very uncertain. Negative recruiting means other coaches are telling him to not believe Currie and that Tennessee will never be good again and that we are going to get a bad hire.

I think Currie had to drop a MOAB on him to keep him on the hook.

Of course, it's possible Dean just wanted an excuse to stick to his commitment and the generic plea worked.

Vols’ move a bit cliche; Currie’s career-defining search commences – Brice's Views From Rocky Top

The overtures to Jon Gruden, a Super Bowl champion coach, the NFL’s most recognizable broadcast voice and one-time UT assistant coach in the 1980s, are very real and much further along than at any point in any of Tennessee’s previous courtships to the mega-star football mind.

Six different sources, ranging from current coaches to former all-time great Vols to college administrators, in the past 72-96 hours tell me that Gruden is far more seriously considering this Tennessee offer than ever before; so much so that Gruden is making some preliminary calls to coaches and other college athletics folks about potentially joining him in Knoxville... Ultimately Gruden must not only choose to say yes but sign his name to a contract that makes it official. Next weekend he is allegedly on the verge of his third trip to Knoxville within the past few weeks in between his Monday Night Football obligations for ESPN, which pays Gruden approximately $6 million annually as its top NFL on-air personality.. .

The air that would come out of this thread if JG doesn't get hired will be so deflating I am afraid anyone other than JG being hired isn't going to satisfied. Feel like this huge balloon is getting so blown up and if it pops, woooohooo its going to be a loud.

Good thing we are hiring him.

Gillespie without a doubt.

Beyond that, it's really hard to say. VN is godawful at evaluating assistant coaches.

We lost like 5 coaches last year, didn't we? And we were so relieved to see every single one of them go, that we didn't even care that we had 5 assistant coaches jumping ship on the heels of a disappointing season.

I don't think it would be as bad this time around as it was in 2012. I just think people are cautiously optimistic this time. And I just can't see us trotting another Butch Jones to the podium.
