It is very difficult to defend his loss. He lost exactly the same way that Butch loses. It is true that he did a good job of getting his team in that game... but we could say the same thing about quite a few Butch-coached games.

I think that Mullen supporters bumped this thread with the expectation that he would win.

In the end, people are stuck making excuses for more Mullen losses. I think that this fanbase is tired of excuses whether they're legitimate or not. At some point, you have to own your record. You have to own your mistakes. You have to own your losses.

I gotta say, at this point, I would be happy to even have a close loss against a #1 ream. We are not even a real contender anymore. I mean we are Vandy right now. People take pity on us. How I would love if we just lost the game to Bama or GA on a hail mary instead of getting blown out by friggen Missouri!

Mullen almost took down Bama yet some still won't believe in him. You're an idiot if you can't recognize what he is doing with one of the worse programs in the sec.

I agree. People who say Mullen wouldn’t work at UT because we won’t accept 8-4 seasons.......don’t realize Starkville is an armpit. I’ve never heard a kid say Miss St is my dream college! Cause it sucks!
He pulls 3 star talent and has less resources than any Sec school not named Missouri.

Give him resources and talent, the man can get it done.

He’s not my first choice but 100x better then Butch.
He’s top 3 on my list.

Anyone trying to point to his W-L record at MSU and think he’s actually accomplished something are the real morons.

Do you realize that only 1 time in 8 years has MSU played a non-conference opponent that was from the P5?

Who cares that he played Alabama close? He’s in his 9th season and got them at home. Hell, Butch almost beat Bama a few years ago, doesn’t mean anything.

I get that some of you may not think much of Mullen. I get that some of you have other guys you prefer. I do too.

But, to not factor Mississippi State into the equation is not fair to him or anyone else you evaluate.

I heard this same bull with James Franklin.

“His best year was 9-4 and Florida, Georgia and Tennessee were down”.

“Yeah, but he’s at Vandy”

“Name one good team he’s beaten”

“HE’S AT VANDY”

“I don’t want a guy who’s best year, the team isn’t even ranked”

“What part of VANDY don’t you get?”

1) Can't win the big game. Look up record vs Top 10 teams. We've just been through this past five year.
2) Attitude problem with superiors. Wont get along with AD or the Haslams.
3) Already making 4.5 million. Will take $5 mil to get a coach who has never won anything.
4) Not a strong recruiter. In some ways Miss State easier to recruit atheletes than UT since the state has a much higher percent of African-American population and Starkville is closer to West Tennesse than Knoxville. Also able to sell mommas on the "family" atmosphere since Starkville is a small town.

The only argument for him is MSU is a bad program so his mediocre record is fine.

That just doesn’t translate to championships at a better program.

As to Mullen's recruiting of diamonds in the rough, most of those guys would never make it through the admissions process in Knoxville.

Mullen is a good coach. A good XOs coach. Not great. He too relies on talent to make up for some deficiencies. Mullen has somewhat of a checkered past of allowing guys to stay on team verses being kicked off....

Can Mullen recruit agaisnt Saban and other big programs in conference and country?

He would certainly be a huge uograde from Butch, although that isn't saying much at all.....he is seasoned as a coordinator and head coach for many years in the SEC. That is a plus....

Would a fresh start at a program with much more resources and tradition be what Mullen needs to go from "good" to "really good" or "great"? Idk...that's the multimillion dollar question.....
