He may be better than Butch. I agree. But hes not significantly better... and if we apply the standards that we apply to Butch at TN, youre wrong- Mississippi State is no more relevant than TN. He and Butch have won the same number of division titles, same number of wins over Bama, and usually finish about the same place.
Mississippi State is irrelevant.
You cant equally or fairly apply the standards we have on Butch at Tennessee to Mullen at Miss State.
Here's the point. State and UT have different ceilings. He was able to get Miss State to a number 1 ranking at one point. That's significant. He's not my number 1 pick, but he would be a great upgrade.
Read more carefully! I said that Mullen is better than Butch.
Likewise bud.
So, just so were clear. We should hold Butch accountable for never winning the East, never beating Bama and a mediocre record... but we shouldnt apply that standard to the coach we replace him with? Id ask if you really believe that, but sadly its clear you actually do.
To quote a Mullen Apologist, "How long did that last?" His number one ranking did not hold up against any reasonable competition.
We should Butch accountable for not winning SEC titles.
Name any time in history where Miss State has had national title expectations and have made coaching changes because of failure to do that
I agree. What really matters is championships. I will say though, for me at least, I was on cloud 9 when Pearl got the bball team to that #1 ranking. It was a great bit of recruiting and coaching, especially considering we aren't one of the blue bloods. It was short lived, but sweet.
Apples and oranges, I know.
I'm not a Mullen apologist, but I know a good coach when I see one. He was a great OC with Urbie, and has done well at his current stop, especially considering the school and resources. Like I said earlier, he's not my top choice, but I think he'd be a definite upgrade.
You dont know that
I know a lot about his situation. I'm a lot closer to Starkville and the State program than most UT fans on here that live in Knox and just assume that the man is going to up and leave.
He never left for Florida. He never left for Penn State. His wife loves Starkville. Dan loves Starkville. He's got a great team coming back next season. He's not making the jump, and he's not coming to UT. Sexton is floating his name to get more money for his client. We have a better chance of landing Gruden than Mullen.
