Recruiting Forum Football Talk XLII

Good Morning, VN.

And as Val Kilmer said in "Tombstone": Well, that was a bust.

I quit watching at the half. Apparently, I quit right before UT did. In hindsight, the 2017 season has been a slow, painful descent into the murky depths of "will we ever be good again". In foresight, I honestly don't think we've bottomed out yet. The LSU game is a loss. The current state of the roster, injuries, poor coaching, poor execution, and the kicked dog mentality of this team all but guarantee a loss next Saturday. This team has surrendered record yards, points, and likely losses this season. No excuse will suffice, and nothing short of a miracle will salvage what little is left of the 2017 season, and Volunteer Pride. This will be one for the record books. Go ahead and stock up on liquor.

It will come down to the Vandy game, and a question of "who wants it more?" Even at home, and even against Vandy, I don't like our chances. At that point, being 4-7...with a lame duck staff...a disgruntled and vocal fanbase in the stands...and with nothing to play for but pride...it would not surprise me to see UT play just well enough to lose.

It says a lot that at this point, we would take 5-7 as a good thing. The trashcan with "Team 121" on it turned out to be an omen. Should have used a dumpster. And lighter fluid.

So...now we wait and see who will inherit this hot mess, and how long it will take them to turn things around. With the current roster, recruiting picture, and what-have-you, I have to think that regardless of the new staff, it's probably 2020 before we can make a serious run at the SEC again. Three more years. Lines take a year or two to build and gel, and we have exactly one lineman on the roster who could start for any other SEC team. So don't order the "Jon Gruden 2018 SECCG ticket package" just yet. It's going to take some time to clean up this mess.

But it all starts with the right head coach. Cross your fingers, say your prayers, light your candles, sacrifice your chickens, and most importantly mail those checks to the UTAD. This ain't gonna be easy, or cheap.

Go Vols.

I don’t remember doc holiday saying that. Just sayin.

Nothing to see here. Could play does not mean his health gives us a better chance than McBride at full strength

We don't know how it all went down. Maybe he fought to play maybe he didn't. I thought it was a bad look but certainly don't know the details. Hopefully he fought and pleaded to play.

Looked for an elite D with Shoop... Top 15.

Then looked for Hoke to take the DL to the next level

Thought Wells was the OL whisperer, exposing Mahoney’s ineptitude

Welp

Amazing to me how easy the DE got hooked by the tackle as Mizzou ran the same play over and over. Agree with OGbbayavi, our LB run into the blockers instead of trying to shed them... Kyle Phillips is too slow to play DE in the SEC.

S&C especially

We're so weak physically in the trenches that it should be a crime. Some of these guys look like they've barely touched a weight. Both lines got abused last night. I look at teams like Bama, UGA, Auburn, LSU and even Mississippi State and we don't even look the same physically. We have some good pieces at the skill positions but I think it's going to take at least a couple years to really get this thing rolling again. Not a complete rebuild, but a slight one IMO. I think this team will be in the 6 to 8 win range next year.

Folks keep asking what would it help to fire Butch mid season, here is my answer.
Keeping Butch around seems to have allowed mass apathy to set in. Getting boat raced by Missouri continues to push the perceived state of the program lower. IF you think it was difficult to hire a coach after Dooley because of the state of the program, well it’s becoming the same thing now.
Fire him now to hopefully save a shred of dignity. At least then you can blame the lack of coach and not the state of the program in general.

Lb depth is so bad

Bituli, Sapp, Kirkland are all upper SEC level linebackers IMO. Maybe Ignont. If Smith can actually stay healthy he can provide quality depth. If we can actually get a freaking linebacker coach on the next staff who can actually coach at this level we could be alright there. Thigpen is a disaster.

100% agree. We don’t look the same. It’s really sad.
