While true, an endless list can be made the opposite direction, so it’s inconclusive at best. The original argument I made is that he is not necessarily going to improve here, not that it is absolutely impossible

Butch Jones is a perfect example

Agree. i think we would both agree that if Mullen is “the right coach” then he’s ceiling is way higher here than in Starkville.

Would rather have a “less glamorous” staff that my HC is familiar with and trusts to let them do their thing.

I didn't mean I would have a problem with him bringing his staff. Just people saying he would have the money to hire an all star staff. No need to break the bank for him to just bring his staff.

Got another email this morning asking about interest in Johnson City.

Erwin is a beautiful little town minutes away from JC...

Uncles make the drive from Upper East TN to games each week. It’s only mildly annoying for night games, even then you’re home before post game radio is over.

My biggest things with Mullen:
-You know you’re getting good QB play.
-You know he has juco connections especially in Mississippi.
-You know you’re have big and quality Olines and Dlines.

That says our Floor with him would be 8-4. Probably 9-3 or 10-2. Ii will take that every day.

I think we'd just know what we are getting year in and year out in general.

For about 15 years now, we've been no better than the mid-tier of the SEC: Arkansas, Ole Miss, and South Carolina. Capable of a couple of nice seasons if recruiting and everything goes our way (e.g., 9/10 wins) but mostly capable of mediocrity and failing to qualify for bowl games. Meanwhile, the top tier teams in the conference in a "bad" year usually go 8-5 and bounce back within a year or two to challenge for the conference championship.

I think Mullen stabilizes us in that top tier, where you know what you'll get year in and year out and the rebuilding seasons aren't complete meltdown disasters that leave you wondering why the heck you still care about college football.

Wasn’t pointed at you but so many people say things like. “i will be ok with Coach A only if he brings in a big time D or O coordinator”.

There’s been so much disconnect with our staffs dating back to Dooley it’s no wonder why we suck.

Because both coaches were mid major coaches that did what they had to do to get this job and keep this job which is forget the people that got them here. In dooleys case he wasn't ever qualified so don't blame him for not bringing anyone but Joseph. if he pulls Steele I wonder how his career really looks with chaney/Steele combo. Wilcox was good but Steele brings the elite recruiting element that Wilcox didn't.

Butch best staff really was his original one because it was one voice all in sync. Losing Jake was huge. Losing Elder was the next chip in the armor and then all heck broke loose when he cut the bloodline to his program in Lawson

The Grudens have been talking about having a second home in East TN for years. They've been spending more and more time in Knoxville. They like the area and enjoy being near family and friends. Checked into membership at Cherokee, too. They're often there as guests-- have been for years. None of which mean he's coaching... not coaching... or may coach someday.

2013 Roster:

QB’s: Worley, Peterman, Dobbs(B), Ferguson(B)

TE: Stocstill, Branisel(B), Downs, Quinn(B), Ellis
OL: Crowder, Sanders(B), Kendrick(B), Stone, Pair, James, Wiesman(B), Fulton, Richardson, Jackson, Kerbyson, Bullard (Best Group by far)

DL: Lewis, Vickers(B), Couch, Vereen (B), Williams, Smith, Maggitt, Walls, Carson, Corey Miller, Jaylen Miller(B), Brown(B), Clark, Carr(B), O’Brien, Saulsberry, Hood, McCullers
LB: Brewer, Reeves-Maybin(B), Justin King, Crump, Sapp, Johnson, Greg King, Propst, Bynum, Harris
DB: Moore, Swafford(B), Jones(B), Foreman(B), Sutton(B), Orta, Coleman, Johnson(B), Thomas, McNeil, Toney, Randolph

The (B) represents guys that were in the 2013 class that was thrown together last minute. The biggest thing that stands out to me, is that the new coach should have a much better class to try and put together late.

I had dream last night that we got him. Gruden agreed to be our coach. I was in the room with Currie and Fulmer, except Currie looked more like Ronald Reagan for some reason.

It was after a casual meet and greet and Gruden had been visiting and was part of it. I got a chance to chat with him and asked Gruden about coming here and he gave me a sneaky smile and said he would love that but wasn't sure what the future held.

A few minutes later Currie made the announcement. He said he just couldn't wait any longer. We were in the Tennessee locker room. He told us the deal was done and Gruden couldn't stop smiling. He said we're bringing this thing back. It was an emotional moment and everybody in the room was fighting back tears. There was only a few of us in the room including me and my wife.

Everybody eventually left the room and my wife and I did it on the trainers table because we were so excited.

Lol it was a pretty awesome dream. The kind that makes you disappointed when you wake up and realize it didn't happen.

Im choosing to see this as a sign though. I'm back in.

Go Vols.

I understand the disappointment. Married and thinking you are getting laid then realizing again it didn't happen. Hope you didn't need to change the bedding.

And that won't go away. He'll weasel some "it wasn't the right time but never say never" response to a question and 95% of Tennessee fans will swoon for him.

Granted I’m not on this bandwagon but after the Wallace interview on 104.5 the other day the guys were talking about the possibility of him coming to UT. Chad Withrow was trying to dispel the rumors as best he could. The producer of the show chimes in “I know for a fact that Cindy Gruden just bought a ton of UT gear”. I laugh and thought how does this guy know. Withrow was excited like a little kid and couldn’t get past that comment. All of the sudden Withrow was all in.

I don’t know if that guy owns an apparel company but Withrow almost did a 180.

all I know is don't hire a HC whose only specialty is WR/ST. Our last 2 HCs Dooley and Butch are best at WR and ST. No real coordinator experience/success. This making them so dependent of their hires on both sides of the ball. Get someone that specializes in QBs or Defense. That tends to be the most successful coaches.

You pick a side now. You're either right and agree with me or wrong and agree with Nick.

lol can't do it on this one. I have strong opinions on Gruden and Frost, I'm just on the fence with Mullen. Many names on the list I could get behind tho

Seems like a head coach would have a certain free allotment of official team swag for himself and family.

Why buy? 👀

Virtually Half of our practices are special teams in some capacity.

You would think if her husband was hired as HC, she would just enjoy all the free gear.
