The problems with Gruden coaching college, is that there is more to this than just coaching football because they are on college scholarships. I obviously don't know the guy, but does he want deal with all that?

The NCAA and Chip Kelly/Mullen --could there be problems?

So, taking away Gruden, Scott Frost would be my second pick. I Hope he stays where he is or goes to Nebraska if we don't get him.

I know theres a ton of supposed "insiders" going on about gruden and all the turmoil in the football program right now but one guy who i used to always see drop quality nuggets from time to time that were almost always accurate was Skeeter, anybody seen anything from him on here in awhile? And if so has he addressed any of the grumors etc?

He hasn't been on in a while. I think enough people flamed him for being mistaken a few times that he left.

In terms of mentioned possibilities, I think Taggart would have the strongest possible immediate impact. Mullen with the SEC ties would be able to use those relationships. Both could salvage the class.

Don't think Chip, Petrino, Patterson, Peterson, or Gundy are likely options.

And while I like his potential and coaching ability, I don't think many recruits know who Scott Frost is. Relative unknown for many of these high schoolers.

Mullen is my favorite of the somewhat realistic options, although i guess none of us really know whos actually realistic. Hes had a really solid overall and sec record at MSU since 2009 and only had 1 losing season as well. All while in arguably the toughest division in college football over the last decade. His average recruiting class has been around 28th nationally and 10th in the sec in that time compared to 12th and 5th for Tennessee during the same span and hes done SOOO much more. Plus he has the best resume of any coach currently in the NCAA as far as QBs hes worked with and coached. Alex Smith, Tebow, Dak and Fitzgerald. He may not be the Flashy hire so many want but id be giddy.

I agree with the fact that we need a quality, big-time head coach to compete with Alabama, Georgia, and Florida every year.

I also feel, like many here, that Butch was a con man who talked his way into the job and ultimately revealed that he had no business in the SEC. But he was a good salesman and recruited well because of it.

So, I am optimistic that even a B-grade hire (Tier 2), if that person is an excellent coach and good recruiter, will bring Tennessee football into a much, much better situation than we have been in for many years. I just want to see someone in the captain's chair who knows what they are doing, instead of the guy who is pretending and steering the ship into an iceberg.

I don't want to settle, but if leadership is committed to hiring a coach instead of a clown, I have hope.

I've been wondering if there is as some have suggested a concerted effort by some to try to pressure our side into doing what it takes to bring Gruden to the hill. Everyone is saying there's more smoke this time, most are now admitting in 2012 JG was an option but we pulled out and then we have Gary Patterson piling on painting our hiring process in the past in an unflattering light. Whatever the real story is this time it will eventually come out and I'm guessing Currie is smart enough to know that.

Here's my view. Currie can't lose if he hires JG. Even in the extremely unlikelihood that JG doesn't work out, for any reason, Currie can't lose, not in my view. Anyone else he hires, if they don't work out he will almost certainly lose. jmo.

Good to see you posting again.

Man this year has been weird. Between changing jobs a few times and being busy to having to endure seeing this season unfold has taken a toll on my fandom. Still orange to the bone but i haven't went to a single game this year and have barely watched any since the Georgia game. Breaks my heart to even be in the room with a game on lately and i havent even followed recruiting in the last few months, which used to be one of my biggest passions. I'm hoping for a change soon to bring me outta the darkness lol.

Hutch 7 just said on VQ it’s a done deal. He’s the poster who claims his wife is the cousin of Cindy.

Hasn't he said that before? Not a flame, just losing track of who has been saying "done deal" and when. I'm just wondering what keeps changing from last weeks "done deal" to this.

Ya I haven't checked a recruiting thread in months. And have missed watching several games. Just too painful to sit through, even when we squeak out the win against a bad team.

I don’t remember him saying that before, could be wrong though

Just a thought...I believe Larry said a few weeks back that he understood that Gruden had turned down another offer from UT.

What if, at that time, Gruden did agree to assist in the coaching search? Maybe act as an intermediary of sorts to gauge targeted coaches interest and sell them on being HC at Tennessee.

Could potentially explain reported use of the Haslam plane and potential return visits (if any are true) to meet with UT representatives.

Again, just another crazy "what if".

Man i feel ya, i catch myself cheering for the underdogs lately, just so they put a bullet in the Jones coaching career for good. Its like being a Jets or Browns fan and cheering for a tank season to get a good draft pick.

While I don't expect Gruden to end up here, if he does become the coach here, I think his name alone could lock in a top 10 recruiting cycle year to year. He would put together a staff to handle the day-to-day recruiting, and he would get a TON of coverage from the media. Recruits would buy the hype and want in, no doubt.

I think it would be a very similar situation to Harbaugh at Michigan. I have reservations as to how well he could coach up and simplify his coaching strategy for 18-22 year olds, but we'd have plenty of talent after a few recruiting cycles.

Any coach with a pulse can bring in recruits here, especially with overall talent in the state on the upswing the last decade. Since 2009 weve averaged 12th in the nation and 5th in the SEC with Kiffin, Dooley and Butch. Imagine if we had a good-great coach consistently during that time. Id say it would be top 6-8 easily.

No. All he said was we were going after him and he was listening. He did say he felt that Gruden would coach again next year but he felt it might be in the NFL. Today’s the first time I’ve seen him say done deal to UT. And with him having a family connection it’s exciting to hear the leaks are happening.

Ok thanks. I'll admit, not being on other boards, it's hard to keep straight who is saying what.

Do they really think he is for real over there?.
