Its a fair point you are making but coaching in college doesn't always (usually?) transfer to the NFL amd vice versa. Coaching grown men is different than coaching college kids. Mullen has coached the hell out of some college kids, Gruden has not.

I just think if you have the chops to get it done at the highest level, then you would be fine in college. Half the battle in college is recruiting and Gruden would kill it in recruiting.

Has there ever been a super bowl winning coach go to college after he won the super bowl, not to mention one with the name power of Gruden? This isn't like Jim Mora jr.

I have no love Mullen, and will not unless he is hired as the HC of our beloved Vols. I simply give reasons, and state facts as to why I think he would do well here. I was hoping you could provide some cons to my pros. The glove wearing is the only valid con I have heard so far.

I like Mullen, but just go through his schedule year by year. He feasted on non P5 OOC games for a while. He is a QB whisperer. I do think he could win the East. Just not sure he could get us beyond that.

I understand and agree on Larry, Jav etc. My concern is just the possibility of 'the snowball effect'.

Are they hearing things because those things really happened? Or are they hearing things because even their sources have gotten caught up in an out of control desire to believe.

There are absolutely reservations to be had. I am in no way 100% and very much know that I have to see him at the podium to fully believe. But I enjoy getting caught up in the excitement :)

That’s development not recruiting

I’d add... “cool, we’ll be able to develop our players better too, so maybe they will perform to their rating”

it’s both. Star rating is one of the most overrated things. Most “rivals” scouts have never even played football at a high level or coached or anything. Players get misevaluated all the time. Just bc a 2* guy makes it to the nfl doesn’t mean he was developed so well. Sometimes they are just misevaluated.

Here's my thing with the Grumors: I don't really think the percentages being laid out to us by the insiders make any sense.

By all accounts Tennessee has given Gruden everything he wants. The administration is at 100%.

So either Gruden takes the offer or he doesn't. It seems to me the percentage is either 0% or 100%. The escalation of "I felt 50/50 a week ago" and "now it's closer to 70%" doesn't make sense unless we keep sweetening the offer.

Exactly. Unless they're communicating directly with Gruden (doubtful), there's no reason for any more or less certainty.

If you have a coach (no matter who it is) that you think can get you to Atlanta consistently then you hire him on the spot, and let the rest play it’s set out.

What if, and it’s a big what if, Mullen has a good showing against bama this weekend? Not necessarily beating bama, but moves the ball and scores some points while keeping the game semi close. How would that change the opinion of him as a coach?

It’s not even that I’m crazy about Mullen. If you watch his teams play schematically, size, and athleticism compared to what we have had the last 10’years it’s a night and day different.

He is a good coach..I agree. He better be a great one when he gets here. To compete with UF, UGA and Bama he has going to have to recruit top 5 and coach. If he doesn't beat them, we will be right back here again in 3-5 years.

Ok, how many times do we win the East in the next 5 years if the following takes place:

TN: Mullen
FL: Frost
UGA: Kirby

I’ll hang up and listen

What if he beats them? I’d love that. Wouldn’t make me want him more than Saban. Would just make me happy to see Bama lose.

I’m possible to tell but i would def put us ahead of Florida and I’m still reserved about kirby. Richt left him an ungodly amount of talent.

What if Bama does what they always do to MSU and curb stomp them?

You mean like he did in 2013-14?

At least twice. We could have possibly won it this year if he was our current coach.

I just want to see Gruden at UT so we can all see what it's like. There will never be another chance at this scenario.

Unless Jim Bob Cooter comes calling after he leads some NFL team to the promised land. :dance2: Shoot that may be even funner than Grumors. We'd have... Coomers?
