Official Jon Gruden Thread XXVI

Assuming this is a Haslam vs Ergen deal (and that's a pretty big assumption), Ergen having more money is not some sort of unbeatable trump card.

The Haslams' tentacles of influence intertwine multiple levels of both the state and the university. Ergen would have his work cut out for him if he were to try to push for something with which the Haslams weren't at least nominally on board.

I can guess what MIT means. I will tell you what I meant.

I think MIT's nugget means that Ergen is heading up the coalition of boosters who are not only attempting to get Gruden to the Hill, but also to reduce or shift the balance of booster power away from the Haslams.

One of the very first questions I asked right after MIT came on this board, was about something he said about specific unidentified boosters who were at odds with Currie, but were working to ensure that Gruden came to UT. I asked MIT at that point to identify who the leading booster was. He didn't respond. He appears with this latest nugget to have identified Ergen as the Guy.

Which makes sense, he represents a younger generation of money than Big Jim, and he absolutely has the money to go head to head in a power struggle, if he has to.

This hasn't all been about getting Gruden here. There have always been multiple agendas. Anyone who has read MIT carefully could see that. And I'm not saying multiple agendas are bad, just that we should be aware that they exist, and MIT isn't just here to give everyone their dose of internet Xanex. :)

It is clear MIT is connected in circles that 99% of us fall outside of. We share no overlap within that Venn diagram.

What's intriguing to me is that, as you alluded to, MIT is more than pushing dime bags in a dark alley. He is here purposefully, and he's been sent by $$$.

I just want to say, as a graduate of the College of Engineering (wasn't tickle then), how proud I am that my people are apparently playing such a significant role in this.

For those that pay attention, yes.

Not for the male menstruaters that frequent here, sadly.

i think there is a middle group you didn't mention. it's those who are trying really hard to keep up, paying attention, but their thinkers just don't think they same way as other's thinkers think.

i qualify.

the question has been if haslam is in or out with gruden. mit just insinuated he is out, hence ergen is opposing him.
amirite?

I think it's the other way around. Haslam opposes Gruden because he opposes the other aspects of the deal that puts Gruden in place. Not about Gruden, he's a means to an end. The end is less control of UT by the Haslam's.

If Currie doesn't want Gruden then Big Jim doesn't want Gruden.

Wonder how involved Jim Haslam is in anything these days? He's almost 87 and recently downsized from his Lyons View mansion to a smaller place. You don't hear much from/about him in local media any more.

Figuratively speaking in a literal sense, I have been hanging by every thread in this since XXIII. That bombshell really opened it up for me more than any. I'm more on the thought path, along with many of you now, of it being Haslam/AD vs Other boosters(Ergen)/AA. I could be wrong but it makes more sense that AA wants the funds that the other boosters are willing to "dish" out (pun fully intended), but Currie is Haslams puppet and is trying to jeopardize the deal for some untold reason that Haslam wants him to. The Kendrick issue has really messed this up for Currie and is making him look rather incompetent as an AD. So, to save face with his AA counterparts, he has to make a tough decision here and figure out who's side he should really be on (hence the stalling). It's all cat and mouse from here on out, but when push comes to pull, Currie isn't gonna bite the hand that feeds.

Solid post.

He needs to find the hand that feeds him best in a hurry.

Exactly. Ergen has the money, resources, intelligence, and motivation to do this.

Tick tock, friends. We are getting closer to 3 PM. I doubt there are 380 mil worth of renovations without ergen.

Sister friend, I owe you an apology. You questioned Beavs motive in the beginning and I questioned you. You were spot on. The close we get to the end, he’s less and less of a casual fan with contacts and more of Ergens mouse. You nailed it. I’ve been married 19 years and you’d think I’d know by now when to listen to a smart woman. 😉

I say we common fans have a Dish In/ Pilot Out protest.
We all go to the Pilot/Flying J headquarters.
We all have Big Dishes (biggest you have in your house and can easily hold up) and we form circles around Pilot J.
Also, have some signs....that can say:

There’s a new Sheriff at UT
Charlie Ergen Rocks.

(And, what about this chant:)
Dish - yes/ Pilot- no
Haslams - we are over you.

* you guys I’m sure could come up with plenty others.

Ergen isnt a multi billionaire for no reason. If hes heading this up, I like the chances.

From his wiki....

*Ergen highly thinks that sports are “a great preparation for being a billion-dollar company competing against hundred-billion-dollar companies. You learned to step on their foot so they couldn't jump."

Ergen is on board as a majority backer. Haslam hired currie to keep control. Everyone else formed an alliance to take back control. Our guy or no more $$. Sweetened the deal with a VC to help make UT a top 25 research scholl. That is a real quick cliff note

Something that keeps popping up in my head that a poster responded to me I think yesterday...
I mentioned boosters being mad because of the last coaching hire, and he brought up the last AD hire.

I feel like Currie getting the job was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Apparently enough boosters were pissed that they swapped sides after this.

Phase I was originally estimated to cost $106 million but is now estimated at $180 million. The updated plans will include some visual differences, to be presented to the committee Thursday, said Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations Tom Satkowiak.

I work at a university, and know that often times the upper administration and the board have somewhat differing opinions of directions the university should go. Choosing to release this info before the board votes on it seems a little like strong-arming. Can someone who knows UT politics better than I do comment on this?

:hi:

"I think a lot of what the Haslam family has done philanthropically but Jimmy missed the class on sports management"......Basilio
I get the message but I’m not a Basilio fan. He’s way over the top and rarely has real sources, imo.

Or the other boosters are tired of Haslam's way leading us to mediocrity and are fed up with listening to him.

I would enjoy nothing more.

👍 Gotta meeting to go to..I'll be on later for a bit. If you mean that, I'm sure you already know how to contact me. I for REAL gotta get back to what I have neglected. I just hope as I said before that I helped somehow, which was my sole purpose since the loss to FL, get this bum out of here so UT can be back where it belongs.

Wow! I don't even remember you questioning me, but that's awful nice of you to say.

By the way, I can't keep up this time around. I felt like in 2012 I was able to keep up so much better. I can't seems to keep up well enough to even comment. Having said that...

Soon...

Just to be transparent, I'm not really a believer, but I'm a dang good hoper!
