but if they voted not to do the outsourcing thing that Haslam was pushing, doesn't that speak to the group and some of the UT figure heads standing up to Haslam ... maybe a shot across the bow regarding this hire?

All UT system schools opted out. I would not read too much into this.

I have a hard time believing that that issue has much impact here. I could be wrong but I don't see the time in.

So, assuming Gruden is on board and that part of the deal is "done" and agreed to, is it possible that the timing was all part of a concession to JG? But the foul up in the southward trajectory of this is with the Kentucky loss and the Kendrick issue? Both of those don't happen and the coals aren't stoked nearly as hot...

That's the way I'm understanding it.

What I believe we are seeing is one big booster pushing back against a group of other boosters. It was on display with the AD hire when the one booster snuck Currie in the back door. Still a lot of pushing and shoving going on.

To pull off something like a Gruden hire, everyone must work toward that unified goal. I think this is why the media is so doubtful of the possibility of a Gruden hire. I think Larry has dropped these hints as well. That's the reason I can't go 100% on Gruden coming here. I think it's at best 50/50 for me.

It's time to tell Haslam NO that he has screwed up the past 3 hires and this is not his decision. He does not know anything about football

I agree with everything you said. I don't understand having him twist in the wind at this point. I believe there is a reason, but for the life of me I can't get anyone to tell me why.

This right here.....that is the most maddening aspect about the whole situation. I understand that certain things need to remain out of the public eye regarding negotiations and contracts, but this all seems weird.

Either Butch has someone by the short hairs or our administration is really this dysfunctional....maybe it’s both.

I only have a minute but I wanted to say:

-I believe Currie has to make his choice before he presents at 3 PM.

-in biblical times the king's right hand man would be a eunuch, someone who had been castrated to prevent them from becoming power hungry. For Currie to accept this deal, he is willfully making himself a eunuch to the whole lot of them. That isn't what he has spent his career building in his own mind.

Full circle....

Then, if what others have implied about Haslam procuring the position for him, what does that tell us?

Currie shouldn't have made a deal with the devil, metaphorically speaking.

Then there was an effort to conceal it.

I think it was our OLine has struggled so much this year, no one thought it odd guys completely whiffing on blocks. From what I understand the official is in the booth watching. I wish I wasn't serious, but I thought nothing of it watching the game.

Not saying the coaches shouldn't have known, but i see why a guy in the booth might not have.

If Haslam's hand were called when Currie was hired, assuming what's being said here is true, we wouldn't be going through this now.

The hire is more important than the fire.

If he did have a concussion and was to the point of throwing up on the sidelines late in the second half the question would be how in the heck did they NOT know he had a concussion? When these guys come off the field they have a discussion with their position coach every time. I don't know about some of you but when I have had concussions in the past (especially to the point of throwing up) there was no possible way I could've acted like I didn't have one. The dude basically was like a revolving door at a New York toy store during Christmas time in the second half. It was apparent something was wrong with him, at the minimum they should've seen that and taken him out.

Either the coaching staff knew and elected to keep him in or Wells, Scott and Butch are some of the most oblivious coaches I have seen. With all of the precautions going around with concussions nowadays I don't believe the stupid card is a good play.

It just does not look good.. Any concerns about the staff knowingly playing Kendrick is compounded by the fact that Kendrick's backup was out for this game.

Not saying they did this but it adds more motivation to keep him in.

so then using his analogy it would be "I didn't know I was drunk."

The analogy is still not the same. We are talking about one's actions as opposed to knowing something about another. A passenger in a vehicle can't be charged with DUI whether he knew the driver was drunk or not.

If Butch knew and did nothing about it, then it's a problem. But if Butch didn't know, then it's not on him. It's not strict liability on the head coach. Again, why hire professionals if you are blaming the head coach who is managing the game? It's still not a good look, but I don't see an issue for Butch unless more comes out.

From VQ and I couldn't agree more

"For those in the camp of "athletics is a distraction"....
I ran into a family friend of mine last night. Both of his daughters went to one of the most distinguished boarding schools in the country in the Massachussetts, New Hampshire area. Think like more than $50k per year, with high hurdle rates for proficiencies, low acceptance rates, Ivy League graduate/acceptance in double digits, gigantic endowment, etc. You know where both of his daughters went to college? Take a wild guess.... Alabama. (I thought it was insane, but they did) Why? They could've easily had their choice of any liberal arts school, one of the Ivys or Stanford/Northwestern....but their dad took the oldest daughter to a game 6 years ago and they had the time of their lives. They loved the atmosphere, the pageantry, the sororities, conservative environment, proximity to Florida where they stay a bunch etc etc etc.
Note to Beverly - you dont know jack sh.. about marketing...or about the national reach a great athletics program has. Go back up to your offce and polish your midmajor resume...send a few terse emails about how things should be...have a Coke and a smile and GTF OUT OF THE WAY!!"

Alabama is paying our Athletic Department to be pathetic.:)

Based simply on the posted by Duckriver.... if his synopsis is accurate then I would say we are dealing with a power struggle between the Haslams in Knoxville (and their supporter) and the Elgins (sp) and their supporters .................

There is not much we can do if that is the case, but express out desire for Gruden and see who has the most power in the end...... This much I know... WIN OR LOSE..... this battle will not be fought without blood shed (not literal but figurative of course)

Would you suspect today’s meeting has been circled as a “crap or get off the pot” day for a while? And, would you think that this may be the first time in this whole process that all the players in this have been in the same room together? Boy would I love to be a fly on the wall in that room today.

Locking the BOT in to that large contract is also a good way to leverage the NEED for those booster dollars.

Pareto, K-H, yada yada, Im here to help the layman...

Essentially: "well guys we got all these expenditures coming, we really need to consider the increased revenue and donations that weve been offered if we bring in Gruden"

But only after theyve signed off on the reno.

Interstingly enough is also this, the reno revision is expected to save 10mil....

Where have we seen that number?

It's not saving $10 million per year. That number would have to be closer to $40-60 million to line up with what you're saying.
