Which I agree with. Just wanted to play newt's fun little game.

If anyone is getting wrapped up in ancient history, it's those saying that UTAD is going to muck it up. They very well may, but you have to start with some sort of clean slate, because circumstances and some of te players have changed.

some have changed, many more have stayed the same.

Kiffin is as close as we have come and that turned out peaches. Pearl? No. Barnes? No, he was run out of Texas.

To disqualify Kiffin as a splash because of the very unique circumstances of his departure is the definition of confirmation bias. Pearl was, like I said, the mid major darling the year he was hired. Maybe not all that different from Scott Frost. Barnes I could go either way on. He was a big name but a bit of damaged goods. But more of a splash than Tyndall or Cuonzo.

Curious, did you respect Butch on day 1? If so, has that changed and why?

I did. But my views on coaching changes are definitely evolving as I have watched the last ten years unfold, both at Tennessee and at other major schools.

I honestly still like Butch ok - he did some good for the program, but he clearly made some poor choices along the way and those have caught up with him. It is time to move on from him (and has been since at least the Georgia game).

I rallied around Butch back in 2012. But I will take more of a wait and see approach, if we don't hire someone top tier. I just think with so much money in the sport now and with the advent of social media and 24/7 coverage, it takes special people to run programs like Tennessee well and to handle the day in and day out pressure. Butch has clearly folded under the pressure, although I give him credit for holding up longer than Dooley and giving us a few fun memories along the way (Josh Dobbs, Derek Barnett, ending the Florida streak, etc.).

Newts gone so paranoid with his tokin that he can't believe we'd do any better than a G5 search

I dont think we can either. We have done nothing in 10 years regarding the athletic department to impress me or to show me we are serious about winning

Oranges and apples... we were coming off of Dooley... Anything was an upgrade... now we've been through him and now Butch... no more settling... they better be legit from day 1 or folks are going to rage....

And I will add that the AD has got to know what the situation is with the fanbase at this point. He knows if he gets another dud, he will be crucified as well -- and he just took the dang job!

I don't know, a loss to Kentucky is a loss to Kentucky. I don't see how anyone involved with UT could possibly think that there is some "moral victory" or evidence of improvement in any loss to them.

Agreed. But we're talking fired immediately vs fired eventually.

From VFL92 claims to have some connections. Posts reasonably but tifwiw.

The "two sides" do not represent groups who are vehemently opposed to each other. It's just differing opinions about the timing on these things and what is best for the program, current players, future coaches, and recruits. Not everyone sees everything the same in those regards.

It's not that there's a strong group of people opposed to JG. Just a matter of how/when we get there.

Correct. From what I've been told, the work is done, minus the timing and the rest of this season. I don't speculate to know WHEN that will be resolved. But obviously the sooner the better, for all parties involved, IMO.

If Butch is let go Sunday/Monday, take that to be a very good sign. Those of us on a message board are not the only ones ready to see the plan start to unfold

The friction between the 2 sides over the timing seems to be growing, based on what I've heard.

Gruden's camp sees things spiraling downward and is frustrated that UT won't just pull the plug on Butch already. The John Kelly situation doesn't ease things. But recruiting is also an issue. It's easy to say "He's Jon Gruden, kids will come crawling to him" but the reality is that he's never done this, and with the early signing period, the clock is ticking. He not only needs to learn and evaluate the talent, but also how the recruiting rules and process work. Yes, he will finish out with MNF, but he's ready to get the ball rolling at UT.

The other side is standing firm in its desire to give the seniors the best chance to win and compete the rest of this year. While a novel desire, there's much disagreement, very high up, about who/what gives them the best chance.

For those who have been paranoid about Gruden until the press conference is done and the ink is dry, this increasing friction is cause for concern. Just thought I would share.

Carry on.

He clarifies in other posts that his Gruden camp reference relates to those proactively wanting to move towards Gruden in boosters/AD.
