Sorry if TL;DR, but some ramblings thoughts on Currie, the search and future of UT football. I'm not as meticulous as SFD in my research or have a lot of backing, some, but some is opinion. Anyway, random musings...
- First off, Currie wants to be here. Sure, he had a lot of heat at K-State for some of the decisions he made, but by and large, the fact he ran a surplus on the budget meant the powers that be were going to remain happy. However, he chose to come from a program that he could have stayed at to come to UT. Knowing this:
- He knows what our money situation is, probably has looked at the last five to ten years of financial statements and realizes how much more football can/will pump into additional programs with the right name hire.
- He came in knowing full well what the situation was and how unhappy our fans are in a couple of different sports. WBB and Football namely.
- He likely knows what needs to be done, financially speaking, in order to right the ship and continue moving forward. He's not in a situation where the head coach's name is on the stadium. He has no loyalty to Jones.
- He knew, or should have known, the key players in the booster realm coming in. Namely because of his time here before.
- He knows the fans are hungry for a return of prominence in UT Football. He knows (should know) this hire is a make or break for him at Tennessee.
- He knows how far a name can and will go in a HC position. Bill Snyder is a name the Wildcats know and love, regardless of the record at the end of the season. Not quite the same with Jones...
- He's not afraid to rock the boat when it comes to coach hirings and firings. He didn't hesitate to pull the trigger on the most successful WBB coach at K-State. I doubt very seriously he's going to hesitate when it comes time to lower the boom on Jones.
Now, where it gets muddy...
- He has no lead AD experience in hiring for a big position like a head football coach. Not saying he can't, but there is no precedent in hiring the coach of the flagship sports program of a university.
- He is being very quiet about this. Not that it's a bad thing, but it's not helping us in regards to the when and if it happens. But, it appears the wheels are turning. He never mentioned the Lady Vol logo until it just came out. He knows how to keep things quiet. Which does suck for us.
- Loyalty to the boosters or the university? Does he convince the boosters he's right in his ideas for a head coach or does he allow himself to be pushed into a decision by the major money men? I'm not saying either side has ill intentions, but when money talks, sometimes common sense takes a back seat.
I honestly believe he's being very crafty in his search as well as who he has in mind. I think he knows very well what a name like Gruden or Kelly can and will do to the fan base. I also think he knows the pitfalls of what a name like Frost or Mullen would do to the fan base. I think he has the money backing him or else there would have been grumblings on that front that might have been heard already.
I tend to give coaches three years to prove or disprove themselves to me. In the case of an AD, they get one shot at making a splash hire in a major program (football, MBB or WBB). Currie probably knows he can make or break himself in the minds of the UT faithful if he knocks this out of the park and/or makes the best effort to. Effort goes a long way with the fans and if it came down to Gruden turning down control and Saban-esque money, nobody will fault the AD for that.
Sorry for the long winded post.
