JAV has spent the past week or so figuring out his angle for this Gruden stuff. That's a total non-answer that he just gave.

At this point, no news can be good news. I don’t buy any of the insider stuff in the gruden thread because it’s pretty easy to see Currie is as tight lipped as they get. Only a small circle knows anything. He will keep it that way as long as he needs to.

LWS knows JAV and said he's been out of town on business which is why he hasn't posted.

Doesn't have a smartphone or laptop? I think he doesn't know anything about the Gruden rumors but doesn't want to disappoint, so he's going to add his two cents regardless, even though it doesn't bring any new information to the table.

Probably because there is no answer. UT has not offered Gruden. He hasn't been approached in an official capacity by anyone affiliated with UT. There is no open job. Non-answers for a non-situation.

I agree. Every loss he takes after Bama hurts his chances at getting another coaching job. I think Butch wants to protect his rep as much as possible and will take a lesser buyout to leave after Bama. Then he can spend the rest of the season working on espn rebuilding his rep a bit and get himself another coaching job at a smaller program. I wish him the best, he did a lot of good things for UT. He just didn't win enough games.

.

Heard Hubbs on the radio yesterday say Butch's contract is one of the few head coaching contracts in the country with a mitigation clause - meaning UT will only have to pay him the difference in salary between what he will make at his next job and what he should be making at UT. And it is paid monthly for the next 3 years and 4 months.

I assume he'll make roughly $3 million at his next stop because I think his resume gets him a pretty decent job.

The difference in monthly salary between $3M and $4.5M is substantial to normal guys like me, but as you said, he may prefer to take a lump sum offer up front that is less that the total he would get in 3 years just to get it over with.

If I'm Butch I call these guys for a quote before I agree to a lump sum buyout. :)

With how much control Gruden supposedly wants, how much true information leaks could be something he considers. If he and Currie instruct the few people who are actually involved to keep quiet, but they spread information he could see that as a sign that boosters/power players will go behind his back with things if he accepts the job and that there will be more politics involved.

There's probably a bit of tin foil in that but that was my first thought

The rumor that gives me hope is Peyton Manning's involvement. If Currie is smart, he'll let him pick the next coach. If anybody would recognize a good one, it's him. Part of UT's problem has been that bean counters picked the last three coaches. A football guy needs to pick the next one.

It's been reported that Peyton would not be involved in this search unless his advice was taken seriously. He must have really been burned during the last search.

IDK about all that lol but I do agree that Currie will have everyone that actually knows anything quiet. If JAV, LWS and any other credible insider isn't talking, anyone else that is talking is FOS.

So JAV is how Curry does the back channels?

I think he's wanted out since Vandy... and I think UT has been hoping he'd find somewhere to go. Neither CBJ nor UT needed all this negativity. At this point, it's all about the financials.

Kinda makes a lot of sense when you factor in him signing with a new agent. That alone should make it easier for Butch to land somewhere in a good spot that is less stressful.

If he were to stay here much longer, I believe he would have developed some serious health issues.

As someone who supported our coach, I worried (before the season) that Currie was the type of AD who would make a move if we dipped below a certain threshold. I never envisioned that Butch would lose the TEAM as he has. They’re phantoms out there. Final record is immaterial. Butch is past tense...just a matter of when they hold the PC.

Hit the nail on the head here. If you are at the games, it is even worse. It is sad to see and is worse to watch it unfold and know you have very little chance to win and you would think the talent is there. I really think they are either not required to work as hard as they need to which is also retarding development. We may have recruited some guys who are just soft or Jones is too conservative to play younger guys who have more talent but the staff doesn't trust them to not make mistakes. Guess what..............they are human and humans mess up. Play the talent.

He told people before last week he would be gone doing some vaca and business and wouldn't be posting. He isn't your typical sit around and read message boards posters

I'll post this once, in case anybody cares-- probably not, but here goes. UT is a state university, subject to formal hiring policy and procedures. We currently have a sitting HC and a BOT that governs such matters. So while intermediaries may approach Gruden casually to gauge his interest in coaching, they can't offer or promise him anything. They can gather info in an unofficial capacity, but they don't speak for the university and what they say isn't, in any way, endorsed or binding. If Gruden says, "UT. That's wild, man. Let's talk."-- then when UT has an opening for HC, UTAD will contact Gruden's agent and they'll talk. Meanwhile, UT will do the requisite posting, listing, searching, vetting and interviewing required. The Chancellor and the BOT will be involved, and it will become official. Financials will be discussed, and negotiations will ensue.

That's the way it works, for those who're interested. Not nearly as fun as Grudapalooza and Currie going Columbo in the back room of a Pilot, but there you have it. Carry on. Go Vols.

Some folks have more important lives than just VQ or VN. The rest of us just hang out here. Joking but probably some truth to it.
