Agreed this reeks. If Butch played him knowing he didn't have his fastball.... makes him look even dumber.

Okay, we are playing Bama. Would Will McBride be anywhere near ready if JG gets hurt? (and that isn't unheard of playing that kind of team)

Why would he say “I don’t believe Currie has made a decision on Butch”? I mean, these are your theories and that’s fine, but don’t act like you know it for a fact

“I don’t believe Currie has made a decision on Butch” refers to the actual fire date IMO. Again, it doesn’t benefit anything to fire him Sunday. It's very possible

they come to a mutual agreement and lower buyout, shake hands and part as friends.

The season is over, nothing to salvage at this point. Decisions being made are not for this year, it's long term health of program.

I’m confident that Currie will handle this situation with class for all parties involved including Butch and his family and deliver a homerun hire. It’s just not on

most fans timetable.

This is actually a great sign in my opinion, I think he Currie is doing everything right behind the scenes. Have faith, Go Vols

If Currie works all the back channels, and no o e worth a crap wants to come, you don’t fire Butch unless you think you have a very clear upgrade.

If Butch is 8-4 and Cam Cameron and Mike Bobo are the only ones interested, I’m keeping Butch and see what happens next year.

It’s the right call. Currie doesn’t have a trigger finger with no fish on the line

While I don't disagree that Bobo and Cameron would suck, I don't think it is feasible to bring Butch back next year under any circumstance. Recruiting is going to die. Right now there are two types of Tennessee commitments. Those who want to play for Butch Jones for 4 years and those who want to play for the University of Tennessee but not necessarily Butch. If you keep him you can't extend him so the players committed to him will hear "he's done in a year" from other schools and those who don't want to play for him will obviously leave on their own.

If you think Tennessee fans are irate now, imagine another 9 month long off-season listening to Brick by Brick and all this other nonsense.

He's gone. He needs to be gone. We will make a good hire. Everything will be fine.

The thing that is concerning is that he says that Currie has not made a decision yet. If that’s true and Butch is allowed to stay because he beats Ky, then we’re in big trouble and Currie is letting us all down, and worst of all, he’s failing the players

Read it again. He says, I believe and if I'm told correctly. Lots of wiggle room there.

My situation is highly unlikely. Just giving rationale for Currie

Ziti is right about Hubbs and Hyams. They're going to wait until he's actually being fired to say as much.

$1 says this weekend is Butch's last game at UT.

Why fire him after Saturday? We all know what’s coming. We need an upgrade no doubt but you would be putting yourself in a corner if you fired him in haste without a guaranteed upgrade. We could possibly be paying Butch’s salary and another salary of a mediocre/interim coach if you couldn’t find the right hire. This hire has to be a homerun regardless of when that is.

If Butch is gone this weekend, I don’t think it will be because of Currie. Currie I think would hold onto him while he backchannels and locks onto his targets and creates a plan. But Butch may take a reduced buyout just to leave and save his resume. JMO.

It won’t be a firing, IMO. It will be a mutual decision with Butch resigning and giving up a fraction of his buyout.

USA Today (I know, I know) has us hiring Chad Morris. Great pedigree at least and if you are at SMU any win is a great win.

I have learned with these types of situations to gloss as much information as possible and lean towards the overall sentiment rather than one report or reporter.

My current take.

Butch himself is done.

UT is done but being as classy as we can.
- multiple votes of confidence from various
levels and then silence after more bad
losses
- nearly all sources hinting that some
discussions are occuring.

Currie is being more professional and methodical

Peyton has helped unify the powers

Even the pessimistic are saying it won't be about money.

That is good news. The when and who would only be alarming if some of the other reports weren't coming out.

Irony would be CBJ leaving on his own in the middle of the season, essentially quitting on the team.

History shows that UT always hires an up and comer, so I can see why they think it could be Morris. The only up and comers that I'd approve are Frost and Brohm. Jury's still out on guys like Morris and Norvell.

And I think it is mutual. The losses Butch has had this season are sellable to another interested team. Finishing last in the east would not.

I agree. Every loss he takes after Bama hurts his chances at getting another coaching job. I think Butch wants to protect his rep as much as possible and will take a lesser buyout to leave after Bama. Then he can spend the rest of the season working on espn rebuilding his rep a bit and get himself another coaching job at a smaller program. I wish him the best, he did a lot of good things for UT. He just didn't win enough games.

I seem to be in the minority, but I think there's something to salvage from this trainwreck of a season. Unlike in 2011, these kids still want to get to a bowl game. In Butch's world, the chance to be one of the "very few" teams to score four consecutive bowl victories is a Very, Very, Very Big Thing, and the players seem to have bought into that.

It would be good for morale, recruiting and the program if they could get to a bowl game and win. And personally, I would find the entire season less offensive if we could beat UK and Vandy. Some of the keys to doing that can be found on the bench.

Ughhh. I know SMU is SMU but can our coach have some better tea leaves?

Record: 11–19

Well it is SMU and it was a dumpster fire when he got there. ALso looking closer he is a Texas guy through and through. I could see him eventually at A&M.
