I'm going to stream of consciousness type out all the red flags from his hire date to now:

1. Drae Bowles situation

2. The Mack Crowder punch

3. Taking 12 WRs every class.

4. The Jalen Hurd fiasco

5. "Don't believe in halftime adjustments"

6. Various clock management issues

7. Taking weirdo timeouts when the opposing offense is about to get a delay of game

8. Orlando Brown recruitment

9. Champions of life

10. 5* hearts

11. Leadership reps

12. So many transfers

13. Starting Worley over Dobbs and Peterman for so long

14. No QB coach for 2 seasons

15. Hiring an OC with zero experience calling plays in college

16. Hiring an OC who was previously cleaning pools (this actually worked out but could it have been even better?)

17. Saying "ah f--- em" about the fans in a game

18. "Some of the best teams we've had around here in 20 years"

Any more I'm forgetting? There are hundreds of in-game decisions I could add.

The fact that we had so many rape allegations that we landed a class action lawsuit?

I am not trying to take that away from him. I've already said that he is a good coach, and I disagreed with Wick that he was a horrible coach. I just don't think he is..or at least was..a "great coach". I do think he made some horrible personnel decisions that are troubling to me as it pertains to his ability as a discerner of talent, which is a big deal in CFB recruiting.

When you're in cap jail some terrible personnel decisions come with the territory.

I don't know if I would say he was a "great" NFL coach but he was certainly really good and I think he has a brilliant football mind and great work ethic. I would like to think he would hire good personnel people at a college program.

I don't think he will be coaching college ball though.

I don’t feel bad for Butch but this is a tough job. It’s a grind and he gave it his best.

It’s just not up to the Tennessee standard.

That's the way I feel too. He gave it all he had. Probably wasn't ready for a job this big yet. Hopefully he learns and gets another shot later.

He was 8-8, 8-8, 10-6, 12-4 in Oakland. I seem to remember them having a pretty fantastic offense.

He brought in cast aways and made them great: Rich Gannon was a mediocre QB that with Gruden turned into a MVP (the year he won MVP was the year they faced Gruden in the Super Bowl, but he gave him the weapons to be a great QB.

Some guys were already awesome: Jerry Rice, Charlie Garner.

He had a very solid NFL offense. He was innovative and a good coach. I didn't watch much of Gruden in Tampa, but he was awesome in Oakland and broke thru and made tell Raiders winners when they had sucked hard for many years.

I have concerns with Gruden's ability to develop young players. It killed him in Tampa. But he sure seems to love the Vols and if he wants us then we should welcome him with open arms.

No but I think all these “tools” and “flashes” are wayyyyyyy overblown bc a lot of people’s hopes were so high on him they only see it one way.

Eh, I saw a lot of tools to work with Saturday. With good coaching and a good scheme he can be really good.

The part that troubles me is I still see an immature, spoiled (for lack of better term) kid that threw a tantrum when the game didn't go the way he wanted it to at the end. I understand hating to lose but the helmet throwing was over the top.

We are not going to have an MOU with CBJ's replacement before CBJ is fired-- unless it is with a non-sitting coach. UT will not enter discussions with a sitting coach before the regular season ends. UT might go through channels to contact agents to gauge the interest level of certain prospects, but that's it. Agents leave it fluid to leverage a raise and extension at their client's current school.

How many times did JG throw off his back foot or step out of the throw? How many picks did he throw?

QD is poorly coached too but he is scared in the pocket and I'm sure you can see that.

I'm not going to tear JG down. That wasn't the point. I've just seen many references to JG's problems being lack of coaching, but QD is bad.

Hopefully that is Currie's list.

Start with Gruden and Kelly. Make them threaten to get a restraining order after pitching them the job enough times.

If they say no, work the back channels with Frost and Patterson. GP will likely use us to get a raise. Offer Frost the keys to the kingdom and show him the talent level in Tennessee in 2019 and 2020 compared to the wasteland that is Nebraska. Done.

If the clowns running our athletic department can't sell him on why Tennessee is a significantly better job than Nebraska then we have no hope. IMO for a young coach like Scott Frost, this should be a no-brainer. His heart might be with Nebraska. But he won't be able to get the talent there that he can get to Tennessee. We already have a team ready to compete. And as you said we are loaded with instate talent in the 2019 and 2020 classes.

A great coach can see Tennessee is a college football power waiting to happen. Honestly we're a lot like LSU before Saban got there. The players are here. The facilities are here. The fanbase is here as well. All we need is a great coach to take us to the top.

I remember last time we did this. Round and round we went ranking the names of potential candidates.

And then butch jones was announced

We had Dobbs. Lol do you remember how many piss poor plays he bailed butch out of by making people miss or extending plays.

Yeah.

And I also remember seeing Debord actually use plays early in the game to set up defenses for wrinkles later in the game where we gashed them. And I remember him attacking Bama's 3-4 in 2015 in a way they'd never seen up to that point and being one of only 3 teams to go over 100 yards rushing on them.

Dobbs bailed them out plenty, but Debord was able to add some wrinkles to the run game that allowed us to win ugly games. The only bit of inventiveness we've seen from Scott so far is in our screen game. Dude is bad.

I think virtually every big time college QB prospect has tools. So the fact that he has a good arm and is a decent runner is honestly pretty irrelevant. There’s so much more that goes into QB than that. By all means I hope I’m wrong and he turns into Aaron Rodgers I just don’t think we have a QB on campus right now that can take us to the promise land...unless we hire a coach with a scheme that doesn’t rely on a great QB.

😂

My wife woke me up and said "we have a coach"

Jumped to my feet and said "is it Gruden?"

She laughed and said "Butch Jones"

I said "the effing Cincinnati coach? Where did that come from?"

Reminds me of a young Urban Meyer

Yup. That's who I think of as well when I see Scott Frost.

He could be a legendary coach here at Tennessee with the resources we have. A smart AD would have a presentation ready to sell him on why Tennessee is a significantly better job for him as a young coach than Nebraska.

We have the instate talent pool to be a perennial national title contender. Nebraska doesn't. Somebody needs to educate John Currie on this fact.

My dad thought we hired Butch Davis for about a week after Jones was inked.
