So, by saying "he" I'm asking if HE'S yet another iteration of UT AD that does little more than save a buck or two by not hiring a top level candidate.

Since we're all tossing out names (and out of respect, I shall not quote the one that many don't want quoted)

Here's my list of current coaches, some have been mentioned, some have not. And their ranking:

Unicorn/Fantasy Land/Never going to happen:

Saban, Dabo, Meyer, Harbaugh, Jimmy Frank, Kirby, Helton, Bob Stoops, Dantonio, Jimbo Fisher

Not out of the realm of possibility/large paycheck involved:

Petersen, Patterson, Kelly

Reasonably solid hires if you like 8-10 win seasons/can't get to the next level or inconsistent seasons/large paycheck involved/otherwise happy at current location:

Richt, Gundy, Strong, Mullen, Leach, David Shaw, Petrino, Cutcliffe, Les Miles

Possibility, though unproven long term at the P5 level/high risk involved/possible large paycheck involved:

Fuente, Durkin, Frost, Norvell, Brohm, Fleck, Mike MacIntyre, Bohl, Dino Babers, Satterfield, Taggart

Now, of that list, let's focus on Petersen, Patterson and Kelly for a moment...

Chris Petersen - Solid A+ hire if it happens, but you are talking serious dough to sway him from Washington. However, little to no risk involved in making that hire

Gary Patterson - Another solid A+ hire. However, he's building a dynasty at TCU and it'd have to be a real solid offer to get him to move. Like, probably way more than we'd pay. He's close to that Unicorn level in the coach's world since he hasn't moved from TCU in 20 years.

Chip Kelly - Light risk involved (former NCAA sanctions even though not directly involved), but the man will be coaching somewhere in 2018. Has already proven himself to be at the elite of CFB rankings. However, there will be a bidding war by several teams going after him.

All three are not outside the pocketbooks of UT. However, I'd suspect several colleges have taken a run at Patterson before, Petersen likely as well. Kelly is waiting on a fat paycheck and can afford to be picky about who courts him.

Now Gruden, the spirit and intent of this thread.

Medium risk involved since the man has been out of coaching for almost a decade. However, it's not like he's sat on his backside the entire time. He's learned from watching more football than any of us could possibly fathom. I'd suspect his playbook is full of all kinds of crazy sorcery and shenanigans that will dumbfound opposing defenses. And recruiting? I'd dare say that's a non-issue in the first couple of years. A name gets you a long way in that world starting off. But he needs a winning record to back it up.

And paycheck...it's going to be a pretty hefty deal to sway him in.

But overall, he's not the anti-Christ like many screech about on here. He's a solid hire and while he hasn't proven himself at the CFB level, there is no indication he can't compete at the highest levels if he assembles the right staff. And furthermore, if UT opened the pocketbook and paid for said decent staff.

I don’t know anything and don’t claim to, BUT based on what the wise ones with sources say in this thread, I believe it.

The kicker for me was Gruden in all black FFCA gear in the stands. Fastest way to shut down noise? Show up and speak to the team or make a statement about how much you believe in the culture, coach, or path the program is on (even if it’s a lie).

IF the AD did plan a meet, they obviously wouldn’t endorse him being on the sidelines or in a meeting room to chat with the team if their intentions are to make him an offer he can’t refuse. Bad look.

He sat neutral in the stands when he easily could have made some sort of appearance just like he has done before. Instead he sat in the bleachers albeit unbranded and mum on any sort of approval of the current state of affairs.

Could have missed it. Just figured if he did he could have been in a box or the field instead of next to Memaw and Uncle Clyde in the stands.

What was the chatter of someone with the AD sitting with him?

There was a rumor going around he was seen at the football offices. Don't know how true, but allegedly...

Which honestly isn't a bad thing. You take a coach (or former coach) like Gruden that has any kind of class whatsoever, they'd likely let the current hotseat coach know they would be at the game. "No ill intentions, my son invited me and I'll avoid all the media exposure though I cannot control what goes out on social media or how many times those heathens on Volnation will 'boom' or 'soon' about me being there."

Not saying that's the way it happened, but that'd be the courteous thing to do for a current head coach.

I have no doubt Coach Gruden would be appropriate in every sense of the word.
