1. Loss of control regarding S&C resulting in players neglecting S&C and running things as they see fit

2. Maddening personnel decisions

3. Clock / game / end game management

4. Becoming increasingly conservative and cautious, discarding elements that brought early success

5. Inflexibility to allow coaches to implement their offense or defense

6. Failure to deliver championship appearances in what was largely the weakest East division in years

7. Player development

These are the unfortunate ingredients of Butch’s failure to prove he is the coach we need

It seems you could add recruiting issues to the list. Not enough OL/DL/LB's.

LB depth isn’t THAT bad this year. They just won’t put the right guys on the field.

DL on the other hand...still can’t believe Butch’s dumb*** only recruited 2 DL (both JUCOs) in the 2016 class.

Basically all of Butch's negative attributes as a coach have caught up to him. And as Nick listed, there are a ton of them.

He was able to be moderately successful for a while due to new coach energy, having a few studs on defense, and Josh Dobbs. But those guys are gone. The team is 100 percent his players and we're right back to the Dooley era.

Just sad.

QD has NFL talent... may be one and done

I think Tennessee has two quarterbacks they are comfortable with an can’t go wrong. One of the deepest QB units in the nation

Butch Jones and this team are hungry. Rock got these boys looking mean and ready to eat out there on the football field. Butch Stones baby. So on and so forth.

I think transfers has killed that. First class, lost Hendrix and Henderson. Then injuries were awful

LB could never develop. Bates, Bryant, injuries killed there too.

OL doesn’t hurt for numbers or star power, but whether development, scheme or coaching, is just not good

Just so funny how the media was drooling over the OL in the off season. “We have 10+ guys returning with starting experience”. Well if only 1 of those 10 are SEC caliber OLman and one is 18 years old.... lol

Good OL coach and better system will have this group looking much better. I think they've got the physical tools, just not the confidence and command of their assignments.

Matthews was critical of their recruiting of the linebacker position this morning. Talked about the middle linebacker at A&M from middle Tennessee and how we were only going to take one linebacker that year. He was like why? We needed depth at that position then and now. He also kind of hinted that that kid wouldn't start over Jumper anyway.

Awfully quiet though.

Someone posted something on VQ. I dont have access. But its a quote from a booster

Here it is

"Is still upset with the Currie hire. Was going to be Fulmer but old man Haslam wanted Currie. Thunder Thornton was also not happy with the Currie decision..... all this being said....on Butch Jones....he said someone is working back channels to raise money for butchs ouster.... but he is not going to be giving any money because virtually it really doesn’t matter because UT will not be great again until the old man Haslam keeps his thoughts to himself or croaks."

There's a lesson here, I think. It's smarter to focus on those 3 positions in recruiting and less so on skill position players. If you have good line play the rest takes care of itself.

Ah. Well, damn.

The program is being held hostage by an 87-year-old man who wants to see Tennessee transform into UVA and stop focusing on football. Despite the fact that he played for the General.

Encouraging.
