Big money boosters?

IMO them and lots of other people

By them and other people you mean boosters, admin, or both?

Who or what would it take to change this?

Sorry for what seem like endless questions I am just trying to wrap my head around this.

Currie is wanting 104 million dollars in renovations to the stadium. If he expects fans and boosters to support that, wouldn't you think he is going to have to make a big time hire?

It's past time for this. You would think so but apparently there are politics at play and Currie doesn't call the shots.

I see, so status quo for the foreseeable future 10+ years it sounds like.

Meantime the college football landscape is changing, NCAA on its way out and super-conferences on their way in. By the time we start to get it right we may be barking up the wrong tree. Or maybe we find ourselves in the right side of the new trends who knows.

Currie wants this program to mirror Alabama. He is re-branding the entire athletic department. Look at what he said about the program at Kansas state, he said you wouldn't expect Kansas state to have the best facilities in the entire BIG12, even more modern than Oklahoma or Texas, but they do. Over $212 million dollars were spent on football facilities under him there.

He said his expectations are historically defined. Tennessee is a habitual championship caliber team. That what he wants.

He knows Butch isn't the guy. That's why he wasn't given a raise or an extension by Currie. He wants to fire Butch, but he has to have a legitimate reason to. Butch has done some good things here, no denying that. But he has plateaued. You can't just axe him after that good stuff or it will taint the program for a potential hire.

He is feeding Butch enough rope to hang himself with. And he knows Butch will hang himself. He always does. Once it comes down to brass tacks, Currie will have a meeting with him, show him his conference record since he's been at Tennessee, compare it to other coaches of the same tenure and salary range. Explain he is below average. Tell him to pack his sh*t. That's the way she goes sometimes....

Butch will go be a coach somewhere more his level. And I wish him and his family the best.

In times like this, you're gonna hear all sorts of things, especially from people with "sources". Don't believe anything. $10 million buyout is definitely something.

10 mill is certainly something when your program is way down, or it is still building; however once the program has been built back and is consistently winning again 10 mill is nothing. In the past even with the money many of the choices would not want to come.....now this is not the case. Tennessee has the best chance (of any schools looking) to get the best coach available. The people who know.....do know and they would be willing to fork over the dough.

My question...if Haslam isn't that serious about championships why should the fans care? These dudes know how crazy we are about UT and promote false hope....in reality they are suckering the paying fans and making $. Fans have brought it like a champ :)...but not the boosters. Logic says to stop giving these dudes your $ unless music city bowls excite you.

I think the Georgia game should be the deciding factor for Butch. I am sure were going to do something dumb and make our usual mental mistakes and bad play calls in that game. Maybe they will turn it over four or five times and we'll win anyway. Butch doesn't use very good judgement on game day. Some of the ignorant things we have done really are actually hard to believe.

Man. Watch Miss St get beat down by Georgia, then Georgia is ranked top 10, coming into Knoxville. Butch will find some way to weasel out a win. Georgia will make a mistake. Give us the game. Then Butch will walk up into a press conference with his chest puffed out and act like he just beat the New England Patriots.

Then Georgia will end up a 8-5 team with a fluke win over Miss state. Then Tennessee loses to Vandy, LSU, Bama....Butch gets 9-4 after winning the Chic-fil-a bowl 88-23 over 7-5 Wake Forest. Everyone celebrates the blow out. Talks about how we just needed to get JJ back. That's why we struggled to beat anyone good all season. Shoops defense suddenly looks ok. So suddenly it was just not having key guys.

Butch suddenly hasn't done enough to fire himself.....but hasn't done enough to save his job. He remains in a state of uncertainty. We get some good recruits. Lose JG and Tyler Byrd to transfer. But everyone raves over the new kids....
"2018 is gonna be the year. Watch and see. We got talent for days. Get all our guys back from injuries. Everyone's been working out and stuff. Butch gets over the hump!"

Well right now, the brand is the laughing stock of CFB at the moment, and so is it's head coach, if that doesn't stir someone to make a change then nothing will

They are not the laughing stock of CFB. I did see some people laughing at TN fans though calling for the coach's head after 3rd game. TN is relevant and will be the 3:30 CBS game against GA. TN has beaten GA two years in a row and the East is once again between TN, FL and Ga. TN lost to Fl but we need to move on. Let's see how this season plays out and people need to put their pitchforks away. Butch better hope they beat Ga though. I think even when this team was only picked to be 7-5 by most and to lose to Ga actually losing to Ga will make the call for Butch's firing extremely loud.

If we're placing single games as deciding factors in coach 23's fate, he's already fired.

... Just wow man... Youve obviously thought thru this more than once.

Wash, rinse, repeat for 2018 and 2019. You are right... We seem to be in a worst case scenario. Butch is not a good enough coach to win championships, but he's not bad enough to fire. The complacent UT administration doesn't care one way or another as long as those seats are being filled with people in orange shirts.

LWS so the Haslams and boosters don't care about winning at all? They don't see how that could make even more money for the university? Surely Peyton and Phil are not okay with a subpar team. This is a nightmare honestly. Why did they hire Currie then? He has stated championships is the goal I don't know how many times! Why would he agree to come here if he is handcuffed from doing his job? Why didn't they just hire Gilbert if they wanted to control someone.

its just my opinion based on the actions they have taken in the last 10 years. I don't know the answers to those questions on why people think and do things.

I'm fairly certain that Manning and Coach Fulmer disagree with a lot of what those making decisions have done during the last 10 years. They don't have the capital to do much about it. Neither favored Currie for the job.

Charles Ergen alone has a net worth of $15.7 BILLION dollars.
Thunder is a billionaire.
Haslem is worth a few billion.
Allan Jones has a 25,000 sq foot home and is worth over $500,000,000 dollars and founded a company worth $40 billion dollars.

They probably have $10,000,000 in landscaping at their homes.

If you don't think they can pool a few bucks to raise $10 million, you're crazy.

Don't disagree about their riches.

But then why have they NEVER done it before...in any sport? Never spent that kind of money on a buyout OR on the front end to hire a proven winner. We always...ALWAYS!...go the way of the "up & comer" or the "firee-retiree".

History does not support your theory.

I don't remember the boosters buying out Doolittles contract. In fact, the University was still paying on it this time last year. The boosters power comes from giving donations as a tax incentive for the next building project. Their influence will determine a coaches future, but they don't make emotional decisions financially. They make financial decisions when it benefits them. That's how they became billionaires in the first place.
