Lol, He did cool off Sumlin's seat a little. Funny how before the year those were to two mostly likely and they still are. They gauged us around 7 wins and a warm seat for Butch. Sounds about right.
I don't have a list - but am interested to see if any of what I was just told is true...
I'll quote the text I received: "Butch has lost major boosters. $10M buyout is not a problem. Needs to win out minus Alabama. If not, expect word after LSU game."
Again I have no inside knowledge personally. But this guy is a friend and has been right on several other instances pertaining to UT athletics (mainly basketball).
I'm hoping some better-connected folks can either refute or confirm.
"Supposed to" is the term to focus on. That means teams you are clearly more talented than and have a distinct advantage over, teams that are NOT acceptable losses...for us, that's teams like South Carolina. Vanderbilt. Arkansas...Florida this year was a "supposed to", that's not Spurrier or Meyer on the sideline, Mcelwain is just as incompetent as Butch and has been in a nightmare scenario for 8 weeks prior to the game. Butch pissed his pants after being handed an ideal scenario.
Dabo wins the games he is supposed to win.
Saban wins the games he is supposed to win.
James Franklin wins the games he is supposed to win.
Urban Meyer wins the games he is supposed to win.
Mike Gundy wins the games he is supposed to win.
Justin Fuente wins the games he is supposed to win.
Jimbo Fischer wins the games he is supposed to win.
Lincoln Riley wins games he ISNT supposed to win.
Mike Norvell wins the games he is supposed to win.
Jim Harbaugh wins the games he is supposed to win.
Clay Helton wins the games he is supposed to win.
Chris Petersen wins the games he is supposed to win.
Gary Patterson wins the games he is supposed to win.
Bryan Harsin wins the games he is supposed to win.
Kyle Whittingham wins the games he is supposed to win.
No clue what they are thinking. My short list would include
Jeff Brohm, Mike Norvell and DJ Durkin. All can coach and be gotten for a reasonable amount. Have had success at lower tiered programs.. Durkin is a real good recruiter. Brohm be most difficult to get because of incentives he has in contract. Norvell likely get for a good price and he would love to have job.
I seriously doubt there's someone out there who looks at 10milllion and says "No problem"
You don't become a billionaire by throwing 10 million out there like it's nothing.
UTAD will do as always and let Butch slide until the end of the year, Meanwhile a few other schools will fire the coach they have and pony up some big$ and take a some big name coaches. Then when the end of the year comes UTAD will get off there butts fire Jones and hire a mid tear Coach who will be another CBJ, Dooley, Kiffin because the best coaches will be at the schools that ddint wait and we will start the same mess all over again. Thats what we have come to expect from UT.

The Vols are perhaps only the 3rd best team in the state of Tennessee. In year 5 that is totally ridiculous and unacceptable. Some coaches have that winning vibe...or a penchant for winning...Butch is the complete opposite. All 3 Florida losses...Oklahoma...Vandy. Even had a 4th quarter lead at Bama that we all knew wouldn't last.
Some say "ehhhh. It's one game. It's a long season". It is just one game...but it had monumental implications (always does) for the rest of the season. It can either make or destroy your season. Butch found a way to accomplish the latter. If Florida had suspended the entire starting team, Butch would still have found a way to choke it away. Maybe not everybody is so accepting of seeing this once proud program be crapped away by an incompetent coach way in over his head. We can hope.
I'd say this is more than likely the case. They're not going to bail them out on their bad coaching hires. I don't blame them, they keep doing it. It's like rewarding a kid for failure. The stands will have to empty out and likely will with awesome Butch at the controls. Only thing they listen to is loss of revenue.
More smoke:
on Gruden: On the idea of coming back to coaching, Jon Gruden tells Pewter Report, Ive met with several people I wont deny that. People just about every year I talk about coming back to coach. Im not in here every day at 4:30 or 4:00 in the morning watching pinball. You know? Im preparing myself to come back. I am. Every day. Im preparing to come back. It helps me in my broadcasting and I think if you lose that edge you cant come back unless you are totally wired with college football, personnel, schemes, the CBA, how people are practicing, trends, you know. Youve got stay on top of this stuff.
I'll say this, Franklin lost to Pitt last year and Temple the year before. Temple had lost 39 straight to Penn State until they played a James Franklin coached team. TEMPLE. LOST TO TEMPLE.
So LWS and Carter it sounds like Currie is just a puppet of sorts in the AD with Haslams making all the decisions. Currie doesn't strike me as that kind of guy- he made it clear he expected championships did he not? He has made all the right moves thus far and did not extend Butch after last season. Would he not have any say?
Butch still has a chance here. If he can turn things around and finish with 7 or more wins and avoid another loss to Vandy he earns another year. While my personal feeling about Butch as head coach aren't great, I'm not sure the administration will commit to paying the right person either. It sometimes feels kind of hopeless being a vol fan doesn't it? Perpetually 3 or 4 years away.
