That's a stretch. Even if that's Currie's benchmark, it'd be shocking if it was communicated to Butch. That would be borderline incompetent from Currie's standpoint, especially before the season.

Clearly communicating expectations is incompetent? Odd view.

The fill in host on Finebaum just said "no pressure on Butch if they lose. If they get blown out maybe."

Zero talk of us winning

We're gonna be 4-0 and the narrative will still be that the power order in the East is:

1. UGA
2. South Carolina
3. UF
4. Vandy
5. Kentucky
6. Tennessee
7. Mizzou

I knew that would be the retort. What employee doesn't want to know expectations, right?

The difference here is that this is an employee under contract, and that contract is going to need to be revisited this year in contemplation of an extension. Why paint yourself into a corner, especially when negotiations are likely? He doesn't win the East, but finishes 11-1 or 10-2. He'd have to go back on that ultimatum, and I'm sure Sexton would use that for leverage.

There's no need to have that conversation before the season with Currie's circumstances- even if Butch asked him directly, he would say he hasn't had the opportunity to fully assess the program until a season has been played (at least I hope he would respond like that).

Giving the ultimatum you suggest just doesn't make any sense from Currie's position at this point in his tenure.

I don't think this is the narrative for literally anyone except the most provocative provocateur. But it does seem you are using Finebaum as your baseline.

Retort? Kinda harsh.

I'm looking for any explanation that doesn't involve a coaching search. If the defense we put on the field in the GT game is the best we have, we're probably having one. Until it is clear that Butch is done, if there is an explanation that offers hope, implausible as it might be, I'm going to at least consider it possible. If Butch craps the bed on Saturday, my explanations will start trending in a darker direction.

No. 23 Tennessee at No. 24 Florida (-5.5)

SportsLine game forecaster:
Tennessee's defensive line will show up
Florida won't get much done through the air
John Kelly tops the century mark

After a classic in Knoxville to break an 11-year drought, Tennessee hopes to make it two in a row over rival Florida in Gainesville in a game that will define the direction of each team this season. Florida's offensive line will struggle to protect Feleipe Franks and Malik Zaire, the offense will sputter yet again and Tennessee running back John Kelly will go north of 100 yards. This line moved from eight to 5.5 about as quickly as a Florida offensive tackle watching a rusher whiz by, and for a very good reason. Butch Jones' crew wins it outright. Pick: Volunteers (+5.5)

I understand, but if a head coach so easily concedes a game plan to hide things from a future opponent, a coaching search probably needs to take place. To me, it's much more forgiveable to whiff on a game plan against an offense UT hasn't faced in years, and won't face in the foreseeable future (and I think this is what happened), than it is to chalk up a potential loss because you don't want certain looks on film. IMO it would be a very poor strategic move by the staff, especially given that there probably is some pressure for results this year (like I said above, a new boss assessing your work if nothing else.

But to your last point, I know it is Florida and it is at the Swamp, but there are a lot of things to like from UTs perspective for Saturday's game. I'm not chalking up the W before the game is played, but I think we get it done.

If you rewatch the first deep ball to Palmer vs Indiana st palmer went he wrong way. Dormady threw him toward end zone and Palmer was cutting across for some reason. If he keeps going straight toward end zone it is on the money for 6.The other was an obvious over throw.

I'm not suggesting that he easily conceded the game. I think they questioned the ability to get back in it after the plan failed, regardless of how much they tried. I realize that this isn't the military (my point of view), but sometimes you choose to live to fight another day.

OTOH, they might have brought everything they had, Shoop's a failure, and Butch is ragingly incompetent...we'll know soon.

Or it didn't matter what we called when we didn't match up well and we lost 2 starting LBs that were critical to the game plan and prepared all offseason. So then you have to keep it as simple as possible to let Bituli play SAM where he didn't practice until game week because of injury. Buuuuuuut everyone thinks it's plug and play madden 18 in here
