I love Butch Jones. He rallies our guys, recruits like crazy, and doesn't get us in trouble. The players love him. Oh yeah, and he WINS! He may be frustrating at times with his coaching and motivating strategies but he is a guy I would love to play for and I am glad he is our coach.

He'd definitely get a call if I were making the decisions. He could bring Marion Hobby home as his defensive coordinator too. We would recruit at the very top level and their coaching has been outstanding. Here's the thing though:Venables played at Kansas State for Bill Snyder. It's widely known Currie and Snyder hated each other. I wonder if that may have an effect on whether or not Venables would interview.

If Tennessee came calling I might just have to get over that if that is the case. I think he would do really well here.

Agreed on Shurmur, not sure I agree on them beating KState.

Alabama A&M is really bad. MTSU's defense has been horrific for years.

Shurmur did end last season well and I think he's poised to be the East's 2nd best QB. However, their TEAM is still unknown so far.

I'm in wait and see on Shurmer. He did well against us last year but lets be honest, a lot of QBs could have made those throws against our D that game. He has started the year well but like you said, not great opponents. I do think the defense has shown to be pretty good again. MTSU has an offense that can put up points and they completely smothered them. Vandy has at least shown it can outclass lesser opponents, something that they haven't always been able to do. This weekend will be more telling to see where Vandy is at.

Yep we would get a budget hire as usual

Venables is the only one I can see being a good hire and willing to do it. We need an assistant who is a great recruiter and hope we catch lightning in a bottle. Maybe even Canada from LSU.

Still don't know if either would be better than CBJ and both would probably need a few years to get their sea legs under them. No thanks.

Ha ha - looking back my quote was cryptic and could be interpreted any number of ways. It was actually directed at the negavols that haunt this board and constantly demand coaches be fired and forget the hole we're digging our way out of. If they got their way, we'd be right back in the middle of the Fulmer, Kiffin, Dolley years, staring down mediocre season for as far as the eye can see because of the constant roster and coaching staff turnover. Programs need time to be built. It is what it is.

From my vantage point, I can see both sides on CBJ's first 4 years. Another coach might have won more than him in that time, but plenty could also have won a lot less with the adversity we've faced. He deserves more time. If we are highly competitive in every game and win 8 or more games this fall and are in on a top 10 recruiting class, he deserves one more year. I give him a slightly bigger pass than most this year (apparently) because of what we lost and the inexperience we have.

But he would need to win the East next year in my book. I think pretty much every Vol fan would agree that not doing that this year or next would be enough for us to move on.

But he's done a very solid job to this point. He's generally run a clean program, we have a good roster, the football is much more exciting to watch, and I go into pretty much every game thinking we can win. I think folks are crazy that equate him to Dooley or that suggest we haven't made any progress under CBJ.

I was just having fun with you. :)

I agee Butch is Butch. Competing in the SEC is a pressure cooker. For some of the younger folks it's about winning the SECe but for others it's about winning the SEC. I'm always optimistic before every season. I expect for us to be very good. I think most often most of us are like that. Those expectations are what create the pressure. Coaches can't avoid that. It is an inherent component of competing in the SEC, moreso if you, like us, are one of the big 6.

Jones doesn't get to measure his performance on his terms. Those terms were set long before he came here, really pretty much all the way back to the General. The same terms exist at every other Big 6 program. Win the SEC or get the hell out. Beat Bama or hit the road. Unreasonable? Sorry, charley. It is what it is. It's called competition and we're not settling for 2nd behind nobody. If you're not up to the job we'll move on.

Our standards are not just be better than Dooley - It's be better than Saban. You don't like it. Find someone else to fleece for a paycheck. We're trying to win the damn SEC. That's not ever an easy task yet it is our goal every damn year. It's not negotiable. It's not just a slogan. We are TENNESSEE and Butch Jones was hired to coach our football team. You best believe there are consequences for failure. No one says it's easy; We've done it only 7 times in my fandom lifetime, but that's the job. You know something else. Sometimes that happens when you least expect it. Like maybe now. So fixed the damn defense and get it done. #GBO

If we do make a coaching change who do we realistically (not Gruden, Chip Kelly) go and get who would come here? I personally think we'd have to take another chance on a mid-major guy just like we did with Butch. Not sure what that gets us really.

I think Chip Kelly would be an option, a name school, Nike and lots of money. He'd have to consider it.

Frank Wilson and Brent Venables would be two I'd interview. Both are highly qualified.
