Here's my thoughts vs Indians State
1) QD and JG were both a bit shaky. QD had a few nice throws and also had a few bad reads (That INT was awful) JG has the higher ceiling but QD is probably more ready to start.
2) Our RB stable is very solid. Kelly is a beast. Very pleased with Jordan and Chandler. CFA had a great game as well. Gillespie is our best coach.
3) Our WRs are young and pretty talented. Without JJ, Byrd and Smith, some guys like Palmer, Johnson and JUCO George stepped up nicely.
4) The OL was decent enough, though they did allow hits on our QB a few too many times. Specifically the tackle spots needs to tighten up quick before FL and GA.
5) Trevor Daniel is the best punter in the SEC, and possibly the NCAA. He's a weapon.
6) The DL besides Tuttle is simply not good at all. I dread playing LSU and UGAs running attack. The edge in particular are getting abused.
7) Kongbo and Martin should not be starting and are liabilities. Phillips and Johnson were MUCH better at DE and I'm sure one of our freshman CBs is better than Martin.
Guys I'm really starting to think of Shoop as Butch's Sal Sunseri.
This is a really good summary from yesterday.
I would add in that Phillips is a gamer and needs more playing time. I found myself almost wishing Kongbo along during runs for him to find another gear and he simply doesn't have one.
I told you guys Ignont was athletic and quick for his size- he needs to get on the field.
Right now QD is the better option and did some good things yesterday, but someone has got to fix his staring down the WRs or SEC teams will feast. He overthrew 3-4 passes that would have been TDs... we will need those in the games coming up.
I don't know if Shoop is sandbagging/going vanilla as some have said leading into SEC play, but I sure hope so. I liked seeing Tuttle knock the rust off and I think Taylor probably had a game hangover from Monday, so I am not counting him out.
At times, Jumper looked smart and took good angles... then he would look lost and slow the entire next series... very erratic play.
I liked seeing some of our secondary turn their heads and track a bit, but we are still giving way too much cushion
RBs are the highlight of the team right now, along with our younger WRs making plays and stepping up, Palmer is going to be good. He reminds me of Robert Meachem...
Oline is just average.
Dline is just average.
Lastly-- I am not being sarcastic when I ask-- can someone tell me why it seems any team in the country can just line up and run a jet sweep/any sweep around the end and get a minimum of 5-6yds every play? Are we not set up correctly? Are we just slow? I watched games last week and all yesterday and closely watched how other teams would cut that off at the line of scrimmage. Are our DBs not able to get off blocks?
