I'm confused, is this saying that having more talented players means you have more talented players?

No, actually it is just the opposite. It means the less talented players you have the less talented you are.

Always glad to help a VFL fan out.:thud:

Thanks, you really helped clear that up for me.

Why are the scales like that? I get the rank part, but the percentage part on the x axis is confusing to me.

What I see is that there is not as significant a gap in talent when your team is somewhere between 40 and 80% four and five stars. Jmo

Almost as amazing that another school is close. And that 9 or 10 schools have more than 50% of their roster at that level.

I think you're reading it wrong. The top graph is the percentage graph which shows only the top 4 teams with over 50% 4 and 5 stars. TN is fifth with what looks like just shy of 40%, like 38% 4 and 5 stars.

that's how I read it anyways. Correct me if i'm wrong OP.

Alabama is ranked #1 in talent with 80% of their roster composed of 4 and 5 star recruits.

Tennessee is ranked #12 with 38% of their roster composed of 4 and 5 star recruits.

You're both kind of correct. These are the schools with >50% of their roster composed of 4 and 5 star recruits.

Alabama
Ohio State
USC
Georgia
Florida State
LSU
Michigan
Auburn
Clemson
Notre Dame

And you got Tennessee's numbers almost dead on. Fifth in the SEC, 12th overall in terms of rankings.

The little black dots are other schools...they're just not in the SEC so they don't get a unique, colorful marker in this SEC-focused chart.

So we should win 10 + scheduled games with our talent?

Based on talent alone (which explains around half the variation if you run the numbers from last year), we should lose to only Bama, LSU, and Georgia. So, 9-3.

Again, the "fuzz" around all of this makes it fun to think about, but I wouldn't put Vegas money down on this.

I only waste my free nerd time on stuff that matters.

I also did all of this in about 10 minutes before coffee and I forgot Texas A&M.

Meant no disrespect to you, Riot. Didn't expect you to color-code every single team in FBS, heh.

Was just explaining to Smokeyman how I counted 9-10 teams above 50%, when he saw only 3 or 4. He was missing the black dots as teams, too.

It's really amazing how much of Bama's roster consists of 4 and 5 stars.

I agree but it's important to note that when certain coaches extend committable offers those players are evaluated more in depth. Saban is know for his ability to identify talent so it makes since for them to do this. Even if a coach like Butch finds a diamond in the rough he hasn't earned the respect as a talent evaluator or coach to change rankings the way Saben has. So because of this, Urban, Saban, etc land a higher percentage of four and five stars. That being said, they also get just about everyone they want so they cherry pick the players they feel are four and five stars.

"This can't be true. I got Tennessee as easily the most talented team in the country, college and NFL. Besides, Alabama is rarely if ever the more talented team whenever they take the field."
