Sounds like you got too close to all those behind-the-scenes things. Soured your taste for the product. Might've been better if you never saw what was inside the factory walls at all.

You don't have to be an insider within the program to recognize the product on the field....

Almost every one of those guys on the SEC Network who have doubtful views for this year are former SEC PLAYERS...and some of them have actually played in the Super Bowl....

And they know that when it looks like sheet....and smells like sheet...you don't have to step in it to realize that it is sheet....

I salute any and all VOL FANS...

But the true problem in the program is exactly what LWS described.....

And just to jog everyone's memory....even CPF has been saying the same things LWS said for many, many years now...

What would you say to Phil?

I'd thank Phil for being part of the entertainment industry (which he is) and for coaching our lads through a national championship and two SEC championships.

And I'd still be a fan who is NOT inside the sausage factory, and happy not to be. :)

My EDIT in post #46 is the full answer to your question.

I was cautiously optomistic for 2015. I was a 9 for 2016. After last year's fiasco of a season, I have no faith in Butch and Co. I'm a 3 this year.

I always get excited about college football, but I have no expectations for the Vols. I'm sure we'll be extremely disappointed by midseason yet again.

You never got the sausage factory saying, did you, VFnB?

EDIT: I realized you probably deserve a more considered response than that. So here goes:

There are things in life to take up arms against. Defense of your nation, protection of your loved ones, shielding the innocent from unnecessary suffering.

Then there's football. Which is, you know, a hobby. A pastime. A leisure activity.

It's a part of the entertainment industry. Specifically at the college level, it's where the entertainment industry and the capstone education of our young adults come together.

So it's not really one of those things to get all Warrior For Justice'd up over. Unless you happen to work in the industry; then it's perhaps important for you to stand up for The Right Thing.

But most of us, we're just fans. Just being entertained. No requirement for us to learn the business side, or "hold people's feet to the fire" over how it's managed. We're just here for the entertainment.

So...you are more than welcome to get all riled up about what's happening with the program outside the stadium if you wish.

But that doesn't make you more of a fan. It just puts you inside the entertainment industry. Inside the sausage factory, so to speak. And you're not necessarily going to get any enjoyment whatsoever out of it, so I hope you're there to work.

Me, I'm just a Vols fan. And happy to be.

Go Vols!

Seriously. This is exactly my sentiments.

I will always be disappointed when they lose. I'll always wake up Sunday morning and read the articles or yib yab about the game. But I am not going to let it make me miserable.

If I am so completely emotionally invested in it to the point that I can't even resist the urge but to be negative, then I'll step away. I literally enjoy football because it does bring me something enjoyable to follow. Is that not the point? If it's effecting my outlook so much that I start just slapping other people around for trying to see a silver lining, then why am I even following it? Lol. That's pretty illogical. Don't you think?

I turned an entertainment activity....into a misery pool to wallow in.

I think at that point, you are missing the point. Lol.

Seasons are like children. You like all of them the same. Unconditional!

For me it's a 10. But it's always a 10.

I enjoy Vol football.

Been following the VOLS since Dickey was the coach and so this poll is for me. I voted a 10 because heck it is "FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE". We are undefeated and unscored upon so things look great. I, like the other old timers, have lived through the highs and the lows of seasons. I don't see us winning the natty this year, but you never know what will happen. I remember the dread of what might happen in 98 since PM was gone. Heck, that year turned out pretty darn good. The expectations were out the roof for PM's senior season and it did not happen, but a bunch of relatively unknown kids did come out and "SHOCK THE WORLD" in 98. This year reminds me a lot of that season because everyone was focused on last year and this year we are being written off by most everybody. No matter how the season plays out, I will be back next year with the same excitement for the upcoming season. GBO IMHO WGWTMFA TIFWIW 🍊 🍊 🍊

If we have an OLINE we going to the super bowl. If no Oline... forfeit the season. I'm super excited to see if those guys can come out and be all they should be. Also, very anxious if they are not. You guys might need to pull me off the Gay street bridge after Florida if we can't get this Oline to be all they can.

Hmm.

Would like to vote but since the desciptions are so ridiculous, its hard to take part in this poll.

8 choices are senselessly overly negative. It seems as if you're funnelled into either moronically comparing this year to a possible national championship season or incontinence.

Id say its definitely less than 92,93, 95,96,97,98,99,00,01, maybe less 02,03,04,05, but then im older, less blind in my optimism, more rational, less likely to get excited.

But im at least as excited as last year. And last year i was more excited than i'd been in a long time.

Snap out of it.

Let us party like it is. :)

That's what I'm going to do. Anybody else that feels that way, they are invited.

I've got no room on my calender for nega anything.

That stuff shows up enough unwanted. I'm not about to invite it over.

2017 is exactly like 1998 but diffrrent.

Absolutely love that article, Chatta, get goosebumps every time I read it.

Love this part the best:

The trees trying to out-pretty each other. The writer, Jake Vest, has a gift turning phrases.

And there's stuff in there a big portion of VolNation could learn from. This bit in particular:

Thank you, Chatta. Thank you, Jake. Go Vols!

My maiden name is Vest - wonder if we're related! He pegged it - lots of my East Tennessee "People" never even went west of Church Hill but they love our Vols.

I'm a 10 on the scale every single season! Like you, I really didn't like the descriptions but I did select 10 anyway!

So...we should be ingorant of facts so we can continuously hype ourselves up by posting silly threads on VN? Interesting take.

Lol, you say that like there's some kind of grand merit to over-analyzing things you cannot change and moping about them.
Is your "interesting take" to continue to eat sausage but watch it getting made so you can be upset about it?
Even with bad decisions and lack of support from the administration, we have still had Fulmer years and success. And even though schools like Florida have shown their willingness to fully back Athletics, I've seen nothing to suggest that we won't step on the field with them again this year and very possibly pull out another victory.

Dam sure not selling my tickets in losing interest in the games because or what some idiot corporate type people do.

LWS, reminds me of the saying about the sausage factory.

If you like to eat sausage, never visit one.

Sounds like you got too close to all those behind-the-scenes things. Soured your taste for the product. Might've been better if you never saw what was inside the factory walls at all.

Kinda hard to "unsee it," I know, but if you want to get back to the excitement of being a Vols fan, you'll have to do your best. Figure out some way to pretend you never saw or experienced anything beyond the football, in the stadium, with the coaches and the lads.

I can't imagine dying without loving the Vols right into my grave. Would hate to see that happen to you. Hope you find a way to get back to the sheer thrill of being a fan.

:hi:

nice analogy.

Having been there and seen the action from up close, how they managed and did things in the 80s and 90s was not all that difficult to do. It wasn't like they threw all caution to the wind and just focused on athletics. Not case at all.

But today's feel is like the athletics programs are just other school activities happening on campus. Not the desire there to make champions. JMO

who said anything about losing interest in the game? As i posted before its always a 10 for me because i love watching the vols play, but my expectation of the season is an 8 because I don't expect them to be good. So my point was more to the nature of the discussion on volnation. Those of us that take a more realistic approach to expectations of the season are constantly told we know nothing and cant see whats going on and all the good things, talent etc. Now we have a true insider telling us thing are likely not going to be very good. The answer, stick our head in the sand and act like its not happening so we can still enjoy the game.
I will still enjoy watching every single game, I am bummed that I cant attend a game this year, as the entire family has done so for years.
So 82 can put some old adage about how wrapped up in it we are and mopping around about it or whatever. I am just a fan, wins and loses effect me very little now because I know what's important in life. My children said "stay away from daddy after Tennessee loses" for the last time many years ago.

If the sausage taste good, i hope they serve it at the factory tour.

most disinterested I have been in over 50 years. I will still watch a lot of football once it starts including watching Vols games multiple times.

My interest level is NOT just related to football but the athletics program over all. Have lost all faith in those in charge (UT administration, Athletics administration and the boosters that decide things) to do the right things to bring athletics up to compete for championships. Leadership is the worse I have seen in all my time following the Vols.

I have sold my season tickets (14 of them) for the last two years.

That's some of the saddest words I've ever read.

Hang in there buddy. We are here for you. Go to home coming this year. Lots of other reasons to come hangout at Neyland than just football. I guess?

There is joy to be found. But sometimes you do have to look.

...My children said "stay away from daddy after Tennessee loses" for the last time many years ago....

As they were growing up, my daughters never once said 'stay away from daddy after Tennessee loses'...ever. Because I never let a loss carry over into the important parts of my life: my family, service to our country, my faith.

So if this has happened to you, even if it was years ago, perhaps there's a part of you that tends to take your entertainment too seriously. Maybe you could do a better job distinguishing what's important in life from what's just a pastime.

Not judging, just saying that life's too short to turn entertainment into one of those things we get worked up over in a negative way. Even Vols football. Save the strongest emotions for the really important stuff.
