I frequently disagree with you, but not on this one. Just a little looking around and you can come away with DSM could easily stand for the Directorate of Scientific Manipulation.

As GV has pointed out the anatomy of things is generally well defined at birth, but the owners thoughts about the equipment may be less well defined (varying with time and social involvement); so like other areas, psychiatry likes to step in and define "normal" or perhaps the "new normal".

The problem is that it's not really a hard science - frequently just a collection of minds defining norms based on the biases of the definers. It didn't take much effort at all to find a lot of disagreement with the way the latest DSM codes were derived, and they almost certainly do reflect heavy societal and non scientific bias. The new norms might also be heavily influenced by what the legal pill manufacturers and prosthesis manufacturers can conjure up - gotta have that market.

1+1=2 is pretty hard science. A+B-C=sane or nuts? Well that's all in how you define things, but it hard to see how someone could go from one state to another overnight just because a classifying group says it's so and glorify it as "scientific".

Apparently if we could find enough progressive people who accept and revel in paranoia, schizophrenia, and perhaps even "criminally deviant mental behaviors"; those could all be cured overnight, too.

Pavlov's dogs come to mind. You can absolutely condition a child to think/feel a certain way.

I let my 4 year old niece watch the Game of Thrones episode Battle of the Bastards. She asked "What is all that red stuff??" I said ketchup. She no longer eats ketchup...

Wouldn't it have made sense to discuss this with your Secretary of Defense first?

Sources close to James Mattis told the New York Times that he was caught off guard by the announcement and described him as "appalled" by the ban and saw it as an insult to transgender members currently serving in the military.

There is no way a man with bone spurs could keep up with a Basic Training unit on a forced march up and down Agony & Misery @ Fort Knox.

Psoriasis (-2sp) was enough for a 4F, as well as other minor issues.

Medical problems cost money to treat. There is a large enough pool of fully healthy and able men to pull a sufficient number of draftees from without incuring a cost of treatment to boot.

So why do it? There other avenues available and it should not in any stretch of the imagination be The Department of Defense's responsibility to be applying bandaids to each and every hurt America's chirren present with when applying to Uncle Sam's military services.
