No such thing as an A2 lower receiver to my knowledge. There was a lower they called an "ungated" M16 that didn't have the raised areas around the mag release that protected it from accidental bumping. But if memory serves, that mod was put in place when the first batch of M16s rolled into USAF hands. The ungated ones were the initial batch put into special ops hands way before the big .mil ever bought them.

Again, if memory serves.

ETA: Colt Model 601-604 which were the original Armalite pattern without the mag release guards. The 605 was when they added the gates.

Being correct down to the last detail isn't a requirement of mine.

The truly funny thing is Colt are reproducing these rifles at the staggering cost of $2500 a pop. Once again Colt is clueless of the market. The funniest part? Colt is outsourcing these rifles to another company, they aren't even producing them inhouse. Lol

I do stand corrected as there is an A2 receiver, though I'm pretty sure our rifles had the fences.

It's been a few years and beers ago though.

Colt just needs to go out of business and get it over with. Get bought out by BCM or someone and become a footnote in firearms history.

But please don't sell out to the Freedom Group. Or whatever it's called now. At least make it a reputable company.

You'll find no disagreement here. Remember the 1903 pistol they put out a few years back? They didn't produce that either. You're quite correct, they should go out of business or just make historical pieces.

Same goes with the fisherman who has a small tackle box, or the mechanic with the least amount of tools, etc. I wish I only had one gun sometimes, my wife let's me be spoiled with like 5 !

Received an email 6 months ago or so telling me I won a 22 rifle from S&W in their "rimfire month sweepstakes". After confirming the sender actually worked for Smith and sending some paperwork in the lady stopped responding to my emails, and I eventually gave up.

My FFL called a couple weeks back asking if I was going to pick up my firearm that had been sitting there since April. They ended up sending a 22 Victory target pistol, but I wasn't going to complain. All I had to pay was the $25 transfer fee. Nice little tack driver.

Think of it this way, you can go from daylight to total darkness in the blink of an eye chasing a perp into an empty warehouse. You aren't a cat, so your eyes won't adjust that quickly. A light gives you the advantage especially if bright enough to temporary blind said perp.

Enhanced optical sight, white light, two point sling are critical IMO and the opinion of others. That whole "it'll snag!" thing is one of those old hats talking that also think you have to have the damn thing clean enough to eat off of.



That's because you might never have used a B5 or CTR lol.

Just once and you'll ask yourself why it wasn't designed that way in the first place.

Update: Aimpoint PRO inbound, should arrive tomorrow. Streamlight TLR-1 next. Also Magpul flip-up MBUS. Then it's back to the range to get dialed in again. Looking at the stock. Broke for now.

Out of commission anyway after having been ejected from a boat during pursuit training. Separated shoulder and enough bruises to cover an elephants butt. FYI, typing left-handed is an exercise in frustration. Hopefully no surgery; at my age some scars never heal.

I'll let you know what I think when I finally get to test new gadgets.

I've got a Pro and am quite happy. Not sure how (or even if) you've sited in a RDS before but there's some targets on this link you can use for zeroing that are printable. (do make sure to get the scale right)

You'll like the PRO. The only thing I'm not hugely fond of is that oddball battery. But the things last forever.

Same thing with the TLR-1. Fun thing about that is you can switch it from pistol to rifle fairly quickly. And the MBUS should serve you well. They are pretty sturdy.

When you get your bank account back up, let me know, I'll help you spend more of your money.

Deal. FYI, I am copying what GSP SWAT has on their AR's. They have moved away from vertical foregrips, using a "thumb over" method to control the front of the rifle. Supposedly allows faster target acquisition.

While you're here, any opinion on 55gr -vs- 62 gr?

Tell me about it. Six years in that unit and not a scratch. Last 18 months, I've made two squad rides to the ER.

Not sure how many more of those significant life experiences I have left in me...lol.

The thumb over does allow for greater control as well as potentially faster engagement (this is always training dependent). But mostly, it provides a more natural firing stance. Hold out your arms straight and you'll see your support arm naturally goes into that position. I do keep a stubby vert on mine as a hand stop, but it also serves to use as a grip in case the gas block area gets too hot from sustained firing. Gloves are helpful in that regard as well, but it's nice having that area you can grab onto without worrying about excessive heat. I also run a mid length system, so that gas block is closer to my support hand than some like it.

Anyway, over ammo, it's not grain weight that's important. Kind of important, but barrier blind is far more important. Will this round still perform after going through barriers? Bonded softpoint or some solid copper rounds will do that. I'd be the first to recommend the Winchester RA556B 64 grain softpoint as the go to load. It's proven, used by more than a few departments already and barrier blind. After the Winny round, I'd say the Federal 5.56mm 62 grain softpoint (XM556FBIT3) or the Black Hills 50 grain TSX loading in 5.56mm. You've got that weird 1/9 twist, so you can't really get into heavy rounds above 69 grains unless you check it at distance.

But in all, it's not about the grain weight, but about performance through barriers and terminal performance.

And an addendum to that. Find what load your carbine likes best. Sometimes they can be peculiar about what they like and don't. I'd try a box or two (great expense, I know) to find out which round is more accurate. Five shot strings at least four times should give you a good idea.

I really want a S&W AR. I am debating on trading in a taurus 9mm and .357 revolver or just buying out right. What would you do?
