2017 Vols will have the #1 or #2 ranked DEFENSE in the SEC

Yeah I didn't bring up Neyland's products or negligible talents like Bob Johnson and Doug Atkins, because that might seem like mining Wikipedia. :) Of that gamut of name pollution you clogged my screen up with, Cornelius Bennett,Ozzie Newsome, John Hannah,Derrick Thomas,Hightower and Mark Barron keeps it honest. When you try to shoehorn freaking Eddie Lacy,JAVIER ARENAS, TERRANCE CODY (among others) and unproven recent draft picks into an EPIC TALENT conversation? I get nostalgic for the days you gumps claimed a NC every year you fielded a roster. What your boys put out on preseason and postseason lists since the dawn of time isn't at issue. Mine was that these popularity contests stem from current reputation...not future quality of the product. When our Derek Barnett has to settle for second team All-SEC? Science ain't being used.

Yep, all those College and Pro HOF players, along with league MVPs, pro bowls, not to mention consensus All-Americans can really cloud those truly meaningful stats, like what's in your head. Isn't that the problem with ole WD? He can't see past Knoxville either.

Did you notice that in the entire history of tenn football there were 40 consensus All-Americans and in the past 10 years alone, Nick Saban's Alabama teams have produced 29 consensus All-Americans?

Gee, how did we ever manage to win those 4 natties?

play a press man defense attacking style..football is all about schemes..if Miami Hurricanes was a laughing stock on defense for the past 10 yrs until last year..all it took for a new scheme to put in..that press man attacking defense..let the d line work..now they are one of the top defenses in the country if not the best

The more I look at the talent we have on that side of the ball, the more I like it. On offense I still have concerns about the offensive line and at wide receiver. However, on defense I have zero concerns when it comes to talent or depth. Last year was a fluke for Bob Shoop. Injuries played a large factor and guys like Willie Martinez were trying to undercut his authority. This year I expect to see him look like the elite defensive coordinator he looked like at Penn State and Vanderbilt. Expect the defensive line to be among the best in the nation. Jonathan Kongbo and Darrell Taylor are NFL caliber athletes. Kendal Vickers is a starting caliber NFL DT and Kahlil McKenzie is as talented a one technique as there is. Look out for Justin Martin and Emmanuel Moseley to have huge seasons as well this year. I think both will be All-SEC caliber CBs and NFL draft picks. Also look out for Nigel Warrior and Daniel Bituli to turn into superstars. They might be the two most physically gifted athletes on our defense. I think both will have breakout seasons as sophomores. And finally, expect to see Darrin Kirkland Jr. take on the mantle as the undisputed leader of the defense. He's got a good chance at being a First Team All-American. Overall, the defense will be top 10 nationally and rank first or second (to Alabama) in the SEC.

Just look at the talent and experience we have across the board:

SDE - Jonathan Kongbo (R-Jr.) / Kyle Phillips (Jr.) / Matthew Butler (Fr.)
DT - Kendal Vickers (R-Sr.) / Shy Tuttle (Jr.) / Quay Picou (Jr.)
DT - Kahlil McKenzie (Jr.) / Alexis Johnson (R-Jr.)
WDE - Darrell Taylor (R-So.) / Deandre Johnson (Fr.)

WLB - Darrin Kirkland Jr. (Jr.) / Quart'e Sapp (R-So.) / Cortez McDowell (Sr.)
MLB - Daniel Bituli (So.) / Colton Jumper (Sr.)
SLB - Austin Smith (R-So.) / Dillon Bates (R-Jr.)

CB - Justin Martin (Sr.) / Baylen Buchanan (So.)
CB - Emmanuel Moseley (Sr.) / Cheyenne Labruzza (Fr.)
NB- Rashaan Gaulden (R-Jr.) / Marquill Osborne (So.)
FS - Micah Abernathy (Jr.) / Evan Berry (Sr.)
SS - Nigel Warrior (So.) / Todd Kelly Jr. (Sr.)

The media will look really stupid in December when we are in Atlanta in large part because of a defense that they felt did not have a single player worthy of being voted onto any of the preseason All-SEC defensive teams.
you put tkJr on the bench.. seriously dude?

Kongbo will start weakside and Phillips on strongside. and you didn't even list Wiggins in the 2 deep at DB?

I can see Maybe bituli winning a starting Job but not at MLB. DKjr will be MLB anytime he is in the game period.

D4H you must be Loki or something because you are, at heart, an ice troll. you are on of those guys that has found a hidden talent that should have stayed hidden from both you and the world. Like balancing a lit grill on your chin. You sir have way too much free time spent drinking cases of cheap canned beers in the woods thinking up really bad ideas while wearing your tinfoil hat.

(1) TKjr was abysmal last year. He was out of shape, missing tackles, and all around ineffective. Unless he's turned it around big time, I would rather just roll with the young guy (Nigel Warrior) that has more potential.

(2) Kongbo is more of a strongside DE. He's 275 lbs. I think Darrell Taylor is gonna be great this year. And he's the ideal weakside DE. I've got to see Kyle Phillips stay healthy before I give him a starting spot. He's talented but I think he'll be the backup to Kongbo.

(3) DKjr is the best LB on the team. Bituli is the 2nd best LB on the team. I put him at MLB and DKjr at weakside LB because I think Bituli is just a MLB/SLB in terms of build while DKjr has the ability play both MLB and WLB. Thus, I would move DKjr to WLB and Bituli at MLB so we can have our two best LBs on the field at all times.

Hate is a strong word.
But not strong enough for this post.

By claiming all 10 under Saban? :) Seriously, how are you not getting my point? They sit you around in little circles and indoctrinate about the importance of college honors...before they go into the NFL and disappear into the night? :) You seem to really stress when there's talk about Tennessee players ending up on any all conference or All-America consideration and that's odd. Your team has, is and will never be shortchanged in that department. Why does talk of potential honors for admittedly untested players vex you so? We're just fans. Convincing us to "stay in our place" has no effect on our players, so it boils down to you living on another team's board for subversive reasons...we already have FANS for that. :)

How many times have I mentioned Pro Bowls and Pro HOF? Tell you what, put up your list of Tenn players who made the 2016 pro bowl and I'll put up Bama's list. Can't get any more current and NFL than that.

He generally thinks that TKJr is a big fat tub of goo who has no business playing D1 football. Tifwiw.

Why are u even here? Just to argue with UT fans? Are u banned from the pink elephant chat room or something? Whatever, u do u. I'll live and let live. Have a good day and I hope that BD dude in Memphis sniffing around Davis and Carvin gets u all in trouble. Little Nicky better run him off before Bama has Albert Means 2.0 situation

No he wasn't. He was probably UT's best and most consistent DB. He can't play by himself.

(3) DKjr is the best LB on the team. Bituli is the 2nd best LB on the team. DKjr is NOT a WLB in Shoop's D. Shoop likes a MLB, SLB, and then a "Spur" hybrid S/LB.

If healthy, you need to get your head wrapped around the fact that DKjr will play in the middle likely backed up by Bituli and McDowell (who played well while healthy) will fill one of the other spots. Which probably depends on how much weight he carries into the season. THOSE are UT's most proven LB's.

Ok. You got Julio Jones,CJ Mosley,Hightower, Ha-Ha Penis and Landon Collins...what? No linemen? We got Eric Berry and Cordarrele Patterson. 5-2 advantage. Awfully impressive since you've been sucking up 5 stars and farting out All-Americans since before Fulmer left and we're a program that had a kicker as our fastest pro day participant as recently as 2013...you smoked us by 3 brah! :)

Remember who you are talking to. There are a lot of informed people on this site who simply disagree with one another... then there's a few, like D4H, that simply don't know what they're talking about... he's probably worst among them in thinking that he DOES know a lot.

I can see Maybe bituli winning a starting Job but not at MLB. DKjr will be MLB anytime he is in the game period.
Yeah... and he has McDowell buried even though he and DKjr are the only two LB's on the team that have proven they can compete at an SEC level.

John Hannah - still considered the best OL in NFL history.
Don Hutson - still considered the greater receiver in the NFL by those Canton, Ohio folks.
Dwight Stephenson - Snake Stabler, Bart Starr, Lee Roy Jordan, Ozzie Newsome, Derrick Thomas, Cornelius Bennett, Shaun Alexander, Amari Cooper, Landon Collins, Julio, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Eddie Lacy, CJ Mosley. Just a little shout out to some old and new off the top of my head.

One of the better measuring sticks beyond, because I said so, is the number of "consensus" All-Americans leaving the Capstone these days and for that matter through college football history:

Since 2008, Saban’s second season — when Alabama had its first showdown with Tim Tebow, Urban Meyer and Florida in the SEC Championship Game — the Crimson Tide have fielded 29 consensus All-American selections earned by 25 players.

YEAR CONSENSUS ALL-AMERICANS
2008 C Antoine Caldwell, DL Terrence Cody, OL Andre Smith*
2009 DB Javier Arenas, DL Terrence Cody, RB Mark Ingram*, OL Mike Johnson, Rolando McClain*
2010 None
2011 DB Mark Barron*, LB Dont’a Hightower, OL Barrett Jones*, RB Trent Richardson*
2012 C Barrett Jones, DB Dee Milliner*, CB C.J. Mosley*, OL Chance Warmack*
2013 DB Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, OL Cyrus Kouandjio, LB C.J. Mosley*
2014 WR Amari Cooper*, DB Landon Collis*
2015 RB Derrick Henry*, C Ryan Kelly, LB Reggie Ragland*, DL A’Shawn Robinson
2016 OL Cam Robinson*, DL Jonathan Allen*, LB Reuben Foster*, DB Minkah Fitzpatrick
*—Denotes unanimous selection

Overall, the Crimson Tide have had 68 consensus All-Americans, won by 64 players

The SEC East’s all-time selections: Tennessee 40, Florida 32, Georgia 31, Missouri 13, Kentucky 10, Vanderbilt 6, South Carolina 4.

Common, admit it, Alabama is pretty dam good.

Alabama sucks, always has always will.

I will give Todd Kelly this, he looked in better shape this spring. And there were reports he's trying to lose weight. If Rock can have him looking he did as a freshmen, he might be able to salavage what was at one time a promising career.

Remember I was a big proponent of TKjr two years ago before he started looking out of shape.
