The previous guy, Szerszen, was with Butch at Cincy since he arrived there. All last summer we saw tweets and vids of players looking jacked. Even rival fans I would talk to said that UT "looks" like a football team.
So was UT a Ford F350 with a Yugo engine?
Here's to Rock building them from the inside out! Go get 'em Rock!
Mike Griffith said on the Vols SEC country podcast (a good podcast by the way) that Butch told him he did not want to call last year a disappointment because it would send the wrong message to his team. He was proud of how they fought through injuries. He also thought there were very good personal achievements (Barnett, etc.). He didn't think it was appropriate to throw all of them under the bus to placate the media and Volnation's football forum (a direct quote by the way).
Makes sense to me.
[/QUOTE]Yeah, I said that a few days ago in another thread. If you look at it from his perspective it wasn't completely disappointing. If you think logically and not always trying to analyze Butch's words from a negative perspective then you could definitely see where it makes sense. Butch has a million and one things he has to do right to appease the vocal minority who rip him. God, I want him to make it to 10 wins so bad this year just to shut a lot of these a$$hats on Twitter and here up.
QUOTE=Bigworm87;13904735]To players, if you didn't win enough, that's all that matters to them.
I'm sure Butch wasn't happy with the win loss record. However, he has to think of everything as a whole. We set records on offense, graduated all seniors, and still won 9 games with a severely depleted roster. He's not going to say yeah it was a disappointment and then everyone runs around saying he threw his players under the bus because he didn't take accountability.
I'm sure there's a few calls he wished he wouldn't have made. That's every coach. He didn't fumble 6 times or commit 12 penalties at a&m, quit the team midway through the season, injure all of his starters, or throw balls 10 yards in the ground at SC.
I think he's an above average coach who just brought in a hell of a coaching lineup. It would be nice to just sit back and wait and see how things go instead of fishing for sh!t to dissect everyday.
This is true. All of a sudden the previous guy sucked and had no idea what the bench press is, and the new guy will have the team moving mountains.
This is where Butch failed last year. He had the talent and let it slip away without maximizing what he had. This year is opposite, not as much talent but at least he is trying to get the most out of it.
I agree with you but in this case there was NO previous guy last season. Dave Lawson came with Butch and he did a great job. In 2015 season the VOLS looked as tough as anybody in Nation. However, he was known to be too hard on the guys and had philosophical differences with Butch.
He quit 2016 spring and TN went whole offseason with a deputy guy. They did not have a SC guy which showed immediately.
I remember after 2015 game against Bama, Kirby Smart said Vols were the physically toughest team they faced all year. Hope we get back to that level of toughness.
Yeah really. Every season there's optimism from one side and the other side says "we hear the same thing every year". They usually EXAGGERATE what they "hear every year". The one year with Mckeefery, we never figured out who the hell he was.![]()
First of all, it's not a UT issue regarding "we hear the same thing every time there's a S&C change". It's every school/team that says that. I have a healthy level of skepticism when I saw a SunBelt team whip us on the lines last year or when Vandy whipped us along both lines in the 2nd half. I'm hopeful that Rock is the answer but I think it's fair to take a wait and see approach.
And it's "fair" for other fans to get excited and take the opposite approach...good talk.
And you are right, it's fair for fans to take the opposite approach. There's not really a wrong answer.
By the way, I'm out in your neck of the woods this week/weekend. The wife thought that going out and seeing family in TX in mid-July was a great idea.
