*****SEC Media Days 2017 Live Thread

I think it all comes down to choice of characterization of the season en masse. Butch probably sees 2016 not as a single whole, but as a long series of events, some really good, some bad, and is unwilling to paint all those parts with the same negative brush. So he declines to accept the phrase "disappointment" applied to the whole.

*shrug* It seems a very common sense response, to me, for a leader to make. And not just a self-serving one; one that preserves the accomplishments and positive memories of his players and assistants, too.

p.s. He did say the season didn't come out the way we wanted it to. I mean, quite literally. I don't remember the precise wording, but it was along the liens of, 'we didn't accomplish all the things we wanted to."

I read the second part of that as well. That is probably more interesting that Vickers saying the opposite.

I think it's a perception play on his end. Some agree, some don't.

I wonder if they agree about Ginger versus Marianne?

I wonder if they agree about Pringles versus Lays?

I wonder if it matters whether they agree on everything?

But heck yeah, let's pole vault over this one for a while!

Ginger.

Pringles

Yes. Everything matters.

CBJ has an issue with the word "disappoint", I get it. He doesn't want his players to think he is disappointed with their effort, is what I got from his answer.

Do not buy into these predictions coming out of SEC media days. We have a really good team and our coaching is drastically improved. We have a HOF S&C coach on staff as well. We are fine. 9-10 wins this fall if we stay healthy.

we may not be up to par with Bama but we can go toe to toe with every one else. that was more like a hit story. we were 3-1 vs FL. GA. the last 2 years. how many other programs could do that.

I did think the reasoning for bringing the players that we did was interesting. Three guys who came into the program as completely different guys than they are today. Listening to Butch talk about their transformations was pretty cool.

I also wonder if he brought those guys because he likes flying under the radar right now and didn't want to make any noise whatsoever.

No. He's right. In terms of talent, we were just as talented as Clemson last year based on recruiting. And at times (2nd half vs Florida, Va-Tech, and Georgia) we played as good as Clemson last year. Our problem last year was poor coaching, poor leadership, and poor health.

Butch Jones didn't prepare his team to play at the start of games like he was supposed to. The leaders on the team let a few bad apples create a toxic environment in the locker room. And for whatever reason we were hit with a barrage of injuries. These 3 factors were why we went 9-4 rather than winning the national championship.

There's still sufficient talent on this roster to win it all this year. Our recruiting rank over the last 4 years is as good as Clemson last year. We have a lot of experience. For the first time in a long time, we won't be depending on freshmen to start for us at multiple positions. If they start this year it'll be because they are that good. Contrary to what the media says, we are close. All it takes is the right coaching, the right mindset from our players, and a little luck when it comes to injuries and I wouldn't be surprised to see us in Atlanta holding up the SEC Championship trophy.

Tennessee was not as talented as Clemson last year purely because of Deshaun Watson. I could go on, but it isn't even necessary to. He made that much of a difference. Mike Williams on the outside was another difference maker they had that Tennessee doesn't quite have the equivalent of. Their defense, in particular their secondary, has been better the last couple of years (put more guys in the NFL than we have). We've had a very average at best pass defense when healthy, and when there are injuries it got way worse.

I agree that there was poor coaching and poor leadership last year, but the 2016 Vols were simply not talented enough to win a national championship.

We may have been as talented as Clemson at our 1's on the depth-chart (even that's a supreme reach), but top-to-bottom, in terms of depth, we were nowhere near Clemson.

I think that the difference would be especially evident on defense.

I don't know why I'm even giving this argument the time of day...

Well, UF is 3-1 the last 2 seasons vs. UT & UGA....UGA, however, is 0-4 vs. UT & UF.

Because it's kind of an amazing claim that D4H made...that a 9-4 team that lost to South Carolina and Vandy was as talented as the team that won the national title, and if we just had better coaching/luck we would have won it.

The talent gaps in college football - gaps between the great and the good teams, good and average teams, average and bad teams, etc., are pretty wide. There are only a handful of teams in any given year that are actually talented enough to compete for national titles - maybe 4 or 5. Until the national title game, Alabama only had to play a single competitive game (Ole Miss).

Just look at the playoff games last year. Only 4 teams make it, so it would stand to reason that they all are pretty much in the same league and any team could beat any other team on any given day, right? Well, I think if that Alabama team played that Washington team 100 times, Alabama would win 95 of them. Contrast that talent gap with the talent gap of the 4 NFL teams that make it to the conference championship games. A talent gap still exists between the favorite and the underdog, but it is razor thin relative to the college gap. The favorite might win 60 out of 100 games instead of 95.

Can someone explain to me how UF is better this year when they lost 11 starters/big time contributors?... (3 CB's, 3 DL's, 3 LB's, OT & WR)

They continue to benefit from a garbage schedule and I refuse to believe a team that lost the majority of their good players will be "better" this year. Watching a debate on if UF is ready to compete with Bama this upcoming year yesterday made me sick. Do these people know anything or am I wrong here?

A garbage schedule? They play all the East teams we do, plus LSU permanently from the West, plus FSU every year, plus A&M from the West this year, and open against Michigan this year. They have a harder schedule than we do this year.

I was thinking the same thing...garbage schedule?:loco:

I agree that they are playing tough OOC opponents this year with Michigan at a neutral site and Florida St at home.

As for conference schedule:
They get Tennessee, Vanderbilt, LSU, and Texas A&M at home.

They play Georgia in Jacksonville, obviously.

Their only road games are at Kentucky, at Missouri, and at South Carolina.

Florida has all of their hardest games at home or at a neutral site.

Their conference scheduling is why a lot of media are picking them to finish 1 or 2 in the division this year.

They play 7 home games, 2 neutral games and 3 away games this year. They play Michigan to open the season which they have not done in years (Idaho, NM State, UMASS last 3 years) Their OOC schedule has been one of the worst in the Country for the past 3 years. Alabama > LSU in my opinion. FSU is their whoopin game each year so does that really count? (FSU won 6 of the last 7)

My point was how do people think they will be better this year than last? They lost most of their team and added Michigan instead of their normal cupcake to open the season... I'll wait.

You just said they that "continue to benefit" from a garbage schedule and their schedule is anything but garbage this year. I'd rather have our schedule than theirs because if we had theirs we're staring 6 losses in the face instead of 4.

They'll get better QB play this year and have a better offense. They lost guys on D (not as many key guys as us though) and McElwain hasn't recruited lights out there but I imagine they'll be at least pretty good. It's also year 3 under a new head coach and lots of times teams really begin to gel and improve in that year.

losing Tabor, Maye, Wilson, Anzalone, Brantley & Ivie is not as bad as losing Sutton (injured most of last year), Reeves Maybin (injured most of last year), Barnett and Vereen on defense?
