*****SEC Media Days 2017 Live Thread

I wonder if they agree about Ginger versus Marianne?

I wonder if they agree about Pringles versus Lays?

I wonder if it matters whether they agree on everything?

But heck yeah, let's pole vault over this one for a while!

There's obvious disappointment in the praise for his time at the podium. Time to search for a back-up.

I've always liked Butch as a guy, and I like him a little more after seeing that interview.

That guy he high fived at the end of the interview said earlier today Tennessee would have an "abysmal" year this year.

Jones knows it's not personal and booger is entitled to his opinion. Now Butch needs to go earn his 4.5 mil and prove them wrong

It's startling not because they disagreed. It's startling simply because Butch doesn't consider 2016 to be a disappointment.

How is a year where you beat Florida and Georgia but piss away a division title by losing to South Carolina and a Sugar Bowl berth by losing to Vandy, both as double-digit favorites, not a disappointment?

Imo Butch just didn't want to use the term "disappointment." He said they didn't accomplish the things the set out to.

You should ask him. I think he'd be happy to explain.

If you're assuming he means he wasn't disappointed to lose to USCe and Vandy, I think you'd be assuming wrong.

Added video of Jones at the podium.

Are.you the fan or news police? You worry to much about what other ppl talk about.

It's this freak. Jones is very cautious not to bring ANY negativity into the program. It may seem a bit obsessive to take it to this level but that's just his MO.

A season in which you lose to those 2 teams, by definition, is (or at least should be) disappointing at Tennessee.

2016 was a disappointing season. I'm not sure why it would kill him to admit that. If anything it might get fans and the press off his back temporarily about his cheesy cliches.

Hate to admit but McElory and Jordan Rogers probably spot on with the offense being better than expected and the difference between 8-4 or better and the dog house will be the defense. The T-D last year sprung leaks. "90 running plays of more than ten yards". Grrrrrr. And injuries all over the place. Expecting a lot better given last year's injuries is like betting on a lottery ticket. Anyway...GBO. CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS FIND A WAY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

I think 7-5 to 9-3 is a reasonable range for expectations this year

I'm sure you're right, but he'd probably get more mileage out of saying something like "Sure, we're always disappointed when we don't quite accomplish all that we set out to do, but..." That way, he'd acknowledge that he and the team share the fans' disappointment, then quickly spin into a positive.

Probably not a guy on that team who wasn't disappointed to drop those games and not get to ATL or the Sugar Bowl last year. Might as well admit it, then move on.

Right, exactly.

To admit you were disappointed to lose a particular game, well, that's just human.

To call an entire body of work, an entire season, a "disappointment," that's more like throwing yourself, all your coaches, and all your players under the bus for an entire season's worth of effort. Effort which included winning the most-attended football game in history, as well as victories over our top two East rivals. There were disappointing games in the season, absolutely, but there were also triumphs. You don't just toss those babies out with the bathwater.

No leader would want to go that far; heck, no leader should, probably (depending on circumstances and the needs of the team).

Mike Griffith just used Tennessee beat VT by 21 and Clemson only beat VT by 7 as a comparison for how close Tennessee is. I'm all for optimism but that guy is ridiculous.

I don't think he was comparing Tennessee to Clemson, but rather defending near losses.

Finebaum brought up that Tennessee almost lost to Appy State and UGA. To that, Giffith pointed out how Clemson only beat Troy by six and Virginia Tech by seven.

You can admire the highs and say the season didn't end the way everyone including the players wanted to. You can even call it a disappointment. If no one truly was you have an issue anyway.

Had he called it that I'm sure a plenty would be claiming accountability and ownership.

I think it all comes down to choice of characterization of the season en masse. Butch probably sees 2016 not as a single whole, but as a long series of events, some really good, some bad, and is unwilling to paint all those parts with the same negative brush. So he declines to accept the phrase "disappointment" applied to the whole.

*shrug* It seems a very common sense response, to me, for a leader to make. And not just a self-serving one; one that preserves the accomplishments and positive memories of his players and assistants, too.

p.s. He did say the season didn't come out the way we wanted it to. I mean, quite literally. I don't remember the precise wording, but it was along the liens of, 'we didn't accomplish all the things we wanted to."

No. He's right. In terms of talent, we were just as talented as Clemson last year based on recruiting. And at times (2nd half vs Florida, Va-Tech, and Georgia) we played as good as Clemson last year. Our problem last year was poor coaching, poor leadership, and poor health.

Butch Jones didn't prepare his team to play at the start of games like he was supposed to. The leaders on the team let a few bad apples create a toxic environment in the locker room. And for whatever reason we were hit with a barrage of injuries. These 3 factors were why we went 9-4 rather than winning the national championship.

There's still sufficient talent on this roster to win it all this year. Our recruiting rank over the last 4 years is as good as Clemson last year. We have a lot of experience. For the first time in a long time, we won't be depending on freshmen to start for us at multiple positions. If they start this year it'll be because they are that good. Contrary to what the media says, we are close. All it takes is the right coaching, the right mindset from our players, and a little luck when it comes to injuries and I wouldn't be surprised to see us in Atlanta holding up the SEC Championship trophy.

That's about the most praise I've heard If it's a thing, I think Butch won the press conference today.

I think if he didn't win the press conference, he definitely didn't lose it or give anyone in the media some ammo to use against him or Tennessee. I was very impressed with Coach Jones today. I think he's evolving into a coach that's willing to now accept other POV's and I hope that he will be given the opportunity to expand on this.
