Good job with your assessment, JacketVol. It's the "if's" that are complicating the season's predictions. I don't blame most outsiders for looking on the pessimistic side. We have so many young players at almost all positions that will need to step up and contribute, it's easy to see where there is doubt. I think there are a couple of factors that will help Team 121 achieve their goals.

1. The Rock -- More than any one factor, his influence and impact will be significant. I fully expect the team to be stronger and more athletic this season. Plus, he brings a mental attitude that will play a significant role as well.
2. The revised, improved coaching staff -- The influx of new ideas, energy, and experience will be quickly evident in the improvement of the fundamentals all across the team. Canales and the QBs will be one of the most prominent examples. DL, DBs, and WRs will also benefit.
3. Leadership -- I really feel that new, dynamic young leaders are emerging all across the team. This will bring a renewed dedication among the whole roster.

The "ifs" will always be there until the players under the microscope show they belong and can compete at the SEC level. My prediction is that we will see on the field significant jumps in performance by these "ifs" this season. Can't wait for August to get here!!!!
Those are some of the positive things I think they ignore as well that helps us do better than what the experts think.

In the pantheon of alltime Vol greats, where does Evan Berry as a kick returner sit? Is he the greatest special teams player of all time?

I hope he can stay healthy because he is a big part of my optimism for 2017.

Actually he may not get to return many, since they moved the KO from the 30 to the 35 yard line, most of the better teams can kick it deep or thru the end zone. A 100 yd. return against Indiana State is not as meaningful as against Florida.

Looking back if you guys could keep one player healthy for the entire year that was hurt at any point who would it be?

JRM for me. I was thinking the other day that at the time we didn't really feel the future impact it was going to have on our defense. I thought we had the talent to make up for it and with Maybin coming back it felt like playing with house money. I know with how our bad the DT situation got it would be really tempting to keep Kmac or O'Brien. JRM was underrated on a national scale and the best defensive playmaker we have had since Eric Berry.

Tuttle.
It all STARTS at the line of scrimmage.

Was not a Florida discussion. Just looking at Tennessee.

I know, and I wasn't disputing anything you said. Just saying UF also has a lot of questions on both sides of the ball, including the critical QB spot, yet I have seen them ranked as high as 10 nationally and favored to win the East by numerous pundits. UT has similar questions, but has equal talent, but same pundits think we will fight SC for 5th in the East.

I think butch deserves credit, but they had like 7 fumbles during that time. That would add up to 45-10. Doesn't really help your argument. App state is where Butch got massively out coached though, not VT

So, seven fumbles equates to 45 points. I am so glad that getting a fumble recover guarantees you 6.5 points each time.

What's going on with GA and RB's lately? So White is already committed behind a stable of backs and now just read a article saying Dalvin Cook's little brother who is a 4-5* RB committed to FLST is now seriously looking at GA?... Guess he's scared of Akers?

Georgia has recruited RBs about as well as anyone over the last few years. Not too surprising IMO

Agree.... I guess they think "this may be the year"... but sadly it won't.... we will TCB again at home...Wonder how long the Kirbster's selling prowess will last without being able to deliver....

Funny how some are scared of competition. Have a connection to Chandlers HS coach. Ty was wanting Akers to come to UT.

He's not scared

The answer has to be Kirkland. The defense literally broke down around him as soon as he went out. He was the anchor of that defense and with no experienced MLB, it all started going to **** immediately.

I have been wondering why the media and it seems everyone is pounding on our chances to have a good year. I see where we have the talent and in my eyes should be able to win nine to ten games.

So, I tried to look at our schedule and the teams we play and try to figure out what issues I may be overlooking that could cause us major issues to the point of a five to six win season. A lot would have to go wrong but here is what I tried to come up with.

QB - Others have a new one and of course we will. Teams seem to go with how the QB goes and regardless of ratings, we have proven very little to nothing on the field at this position so it is a question mark. The potential is there but still a question mark.

RB - Love Kelly but you can't have just one to carry the load. Look at QB, Chandler is a great get with great potential but has never been on a college field AND he has to learn protection which is a big thing. If Kelly were to go down to injury, we are in a possible mess. It just takes one turn or hit. That is something that could make things go downhill quick.

OL and WR overall looks very solid to me and not any known issues or concerns and we have depth.

DL - tons of question marks though talented.

LB - do not have to tell you the issues there but still have talent

CB's - I think if DL and LB get taken care of then we will be fine on the back end.

S - See CB's we have some good talent

On the D, it was horrible and yes we had injuries but questions of health on the interior and again unproven guys on the line.

We have to have good solid answers for this to be a great season at not one or two spots but several.

The so called experts see a D that was shreaded last year despite the reasons the stats are there. Questions at with unproven starters at QB, and very limited at RB with depth. Not a knock on Kelly but he is one guy.

If we stay healthy and one of the QB's is more than solid and Chandler can be a solid backup as well as one other of the backs we have, and Shoop can run his D and we have Tuttle back at near 100 percent with Mac too then good things can happen.

Tons of IF's and why I think we are not being touted as highly. I can see us winning 10 and if things went VERY wrong then 5 games which averages to 7.5 which I think is our over/under right now.

I will be putting my orange shades back on and going to every game and hopefully Bama game as well this year.

I still think this team can win the East but we have to have a lot go right. Health and QB are the two at the top of the list. This happens then I see us getting to 9 wins. JMO, on why we are not getting the love. Outsiders looking in see a lot of the questions.

Because we choked two years in a row.

Sutton, he was the leader and basically stepped up Week 1 to shift momentum for us. Plus he was a monster punt returner as well. His impact in two phases would've helped immensely.

If you're referencing Cook, running towards UGA is not exactly running FROM competition.

So I give my opinion that Fuente wasn't out coached that game and all of a sudden I hate Butch? Find a single post where I've ever said that.

Well, you caught the brunt of my frustration with a lot of the the Butch hate, so I apologize. I have not noticed you being too negative before and the post you quoted was not directed directly at you, moreso at Negavols who like to run Butch down at every opportunity. No excuse for me, just let my emotions get the best of me. Sorry about that.

A fumble recovery doesn't guarantee you anything, but each fumble does have the potential to be a 14pt swing.

It is very rare when a fumble results in a 14 point swing. If you get one deep in your own territory and prevent a score, that is a 7 point swing. If you still have to drive the ball 60 or more yards, you are hardly set up for an easy score. If you do get the ball deep in your opponent's territory, then they weren't close to scoring. Now, if you return one for a TD from within your own territory or return it inside your opponent's 20 from inside your territory, then you could say it was a 14 point swing.

If he isn't the best, he's a close second behind Willie Gault. Gault returned punts as well as kickoffs, so he may have the edge in the more broad special teams category.
