I have been wondering why the media and it seems everyone is pounding on our chances to have a good year. I see where we have the talent and in my eyes should be able to win nine to ten games.
So, I tried to look at our schedule and the teams we play and try to figure out what issues I may be overlooking that could cause us major issues to the point of a five to six win season. A lot would have to go wrong but here is what I tried to come up with.
QB - Others have a new one and of course we will. Teams seem to go with how the QB goes and regardless of ratings, we have proven very little to nothing on the field at this position so it is a question mark. The potential is there but still a question mark.
RB - Love Kelly but you can't have just one to carry the load. Look at QB, Chandler is a great get with great potential but has never been on a college field AND he has to learn protection which is a big thing. If Kelly were to go down to injury, we are in a possible mess. It just takes one turn or hit. That is something that could make things go downhill quick.
OL and WR overall looks very solid to me and not any known issues or concerns and we have depth.
DL - tons of question marks though talented.
LB - do not have to tell you the issues there but still have talent
CB's - I think if DL and LB get taken care of then we will be fine on the back end.
S - See CB's we have some good talent
On the D, it was horrible and yes we had injuries but questions of health on the interior and again unproven guys on the line.
We have to have good solid answers for this to be a great season at not one or two spots but several.
The so called experts see a D that was shreaded last year despite the reasons the stats are there. Questions at with unproven starters at QB, and very limited at RB with depth. Not a knock on Kelly but he is one guy.
If we stay healthy and one of the QB's is more than solid and Chandler can be a solid backup as well as one other of the backs we have, and Shoop can run his D and we have Tuttle back at near 100 percent with Mac too then good things can happen.
Tons of IF's and why I think we are not being touted as highly. I can see us winning 10 and if things went VERY wrong then 5 games which averages to 7.5 which I think is our over/under right now.
I will be putting my orange shades back on and going to every game and hopefully Bama game as well this year.
I still think this team can win the East but we have to have a lot go right. Health and QB are the two at the top of the list. This happens then I see us getting to 9 wins. JMO, on why we are not getting the love. Outsiders looking in see a lot of the questions.
Gators have their own questions at QB, on their OL, and are replacing 8 starters on D, yet a lot of pundits expectto win the East. I think they are giving McIlwein too much credit for winning the East the last 2 seasons witk Muschamp's defense.
Exactly
I did love the ESPN commentator who went off on live TV saying how bad the judges were. I'm definitely done with boxing though, there's no point in watching a sport where a bunch of judges can just contrive whatever outcome they want. I hesitate to even call it a sport if the outcome is that arbitrary. Putting it into the gymnastics and ice dancing bucket.
What makes you this?
Good job with your assessment, JacketVol. It's the "if's" that are complicating the season's predictions. I don't blame most outsiders for looking on the pessimistic side. We have so many young players at almost all positions that will need to step up and contribute, it's easy to see where there is doubt. I think there are a couple of factors that will help Team 121 achieve their goals.I have been wondering why the media and it seems everyone is pounding on our chances to have a good year.

Looking back if you guys could keep one player healthy for the entire year that was hurt at any point who would it be?
JRM for me. I was thinking the other day that at the time we didn't really feel the future impact it was going to have on our defense. I thought we had the talent to make up for it and with Maybin coming back it felt like playing with house money. I know with how our bad the DT situation got it would be really tempting to keep Kmac or O'Brien. JRM was underrated on a national scale and the best defensive playmaker we have had since Eric Berry.

JRM would've papered over the DT problem somewhat and healthy DTs would've papered over the LB problem a bit. It's rough having both your LBs and DTs decimated. I honestly don't know which to pick but I'm tempted to go with JRM as well since he was so much of a do-it-all player.
Just think with the east on the line we had Kyle Phillips, Kongbo, Bain, and Picou playing DT with Jumper right behind them. Last season was a nightmare scenario.

In the pantheon of alltime Vol greats, where does Evan Berry as a kick returner sit? Is he the greatest special teams player of all time?
I hope he can stay healthy because he is a big part of my optimism for 2017.
