Who was the best team we beat?

He won 10 games and his division in a year they were predicted to finish 5th. In year 1.

We were the overwhelming favorite to win our division and lost to teams picked to finish 5th and 7th in the division. In year 4.

Spin that however you want, but I'm more about results than excuses.

I mean, Muschamp was projected to finish 3rd in his second year but he went 11-1, top 10 finish and went to the sugar bowl.
And you see how that turned out

fyp

Well, if you want to talk about all of Fuentes accomplishments and how he won his division, Butch smoked him. So that's a better win than Miami, yes? Also smoked Florida last year which is a better win than Fuente had last year since you want to compare

Yes, I do want to talk about teams winning their divisions.

Yes, beating VT is a better win than Miami.

No, I don't think Florida was a better win than Miami. Think those are about equal.

All true. I'm going off of what I've seen so far, not projecting what could possibly happen.

He could very well go 0-12 the next 2 years and get fired.

Miami was in the middle of a 4 game losing streak, They lost to UNC and a 4 win Notre Dame team during that stretch.

Fuente is very unproven. Butch has done some great things here. It is way to early to think that firing Butch and hiring Fuente is a good decision.

UF hired McElwain, LSU retained Orgeron, UGA hired a guy who has never been a head coach, USC retained Helton.

The landscape has greatly changed when hiring a coach. Those schools are arguably better jobs now than UT.

Coaching in the SEC is as tough as it gets. The fans all have championship expectations, the competition is brutal almost every single week, and the pay, while great, is close in other places, and it is not as hard to win other places. I think that you will see teams continue to take this approach because the big names just don't want to come here as they perceive it is simply not worth it.

So we'd be better off underperforming because over performance is sign of trouble?

Lol, just kidding. I don't even care at this point. Don't want Jones fired and I believe Fuente is a good coach. Ya'll have at the rest.

My thoughts as well

He certainly did a great job of recruiting his second and third classes, but that has fallen off since. A few nice wins, but more maddening losses. I'll give you "great" on the early recruiting, but not much else to this point.

They also beat App State on the road by 5 TDs while we were making excuses (myself included) after we won in OT at home

How is that relevant to Miami's 4 game losing streak? It's obvious when VT beat them Miami was in a rough patch, not the same Miami team that was ranked in the top 10

I guess ending the Florida streak, 2 straight over GA, back to back top 25 teams, 3 straight bowl wins, top 10 recruiting classes isn't great. To each his own

So it's too early to say if he'll be able to maintain success in a P5 conference. Maybe he will maybe he won't, there's been lots of coaches do good for a year or 2 but never take that next step of being elite or improving

Again, not saying to fire Butch. But I do think Fuente is a better coach, and think it would be a positive change.

Again, this is playing the hypothetical "Who would be better?" game that the pumps love to play.

To me, Fuente would be better.

"The pumps". That honest dialogue you "fans that don't slurp at the throne of Butch" crave. :)

Strongly disagree.

Honest question. Based on what? He has coached at Memphis and one year in the ACC. He looks pretty good, but coaching in the SEC is different. If he has another good year at VT and we had to move on from Butch, then I would not be unhappy if we hired him, but he is far from a slam dunk.

They were on a 2 game losing streak when Miami played VT. Had just lost to FSU by 1 and VT beat them by 21.

I'm not sure what that has to do with VT winning the division, but sure.

A Dooley coached team destroyed Jones. The talent levels were not close between Tennessee and VT.

Just like they weren't close between Tennessee and Cincinnati. Even with our worst coach ever, our talent level was far superior to Cincinnati's and will be every single year.

Like I said in the middle of a 4 games losing streak. They had also lost to UNC just before the VT game and Notre dame right after. Like I said, obviously not the same team that was ranked top 10 earlier in the season.

It's relevant to the conversation cause you said Florida wasn't a better win than Miami.....

It's not great at Tennessee. Don't get me wrong, it's progress, and a damn sight better than Dooley, but Dooley is not my baseline.

Correct, Miami had lost to #12 FSU and #17 UNC by a combined 8 points the weeks prior.

VT then beat them by 21.

That looks like a very solid win to me.

Fwiw

Last year VT played(regular season only) 3 teams in the top 25 in talent based on 247 recruiting rankings. Miami at 19, UT at 14 and ND at 10. UT played 5, Bama at 1, Uga at 6, A&M at 13, UF at 16, Socar at 23.
