How well does Butch recruit?

Jones is a weak recruiter. He relies on esoteric numbers (stars) rather than needs. You do not need a bench full of "athletes" to return kicks and having just one fullback would be an improvement.

So stars are not important? Then why do folks get upset with the 3* then?

I thought that was part of the reason some 3*s were recruited, to fill specific positional needs. He has addressed the numbers at each position needed to build the depth that he wants. He has also discussed the measurables used to evaluate recruits that don't include stars at all.

If a 4 or 5* is getable, and you don't even try to get them or even worse turn them away and they end up playing against you with an axe to grind, sounds a lot like Spurrier.

Have you even looked at the LOS recruits we've gotten commitments from? Or running backs?

Butch is a good recruiter, not great. Tennessee is one of the easiest places in the country try to recruit to and top 15 classes should be relatively easy.

Yea, Tennessee is probably the third easiest place to recruit in the SEC East...

From where we were when he got here, he is a great recruiter.

However, his evaluations and retention rate diminish the end result. And in a few cases, his luck sucks. It seems a large portion of his sorely needed recruits have had injury issues and never or rarely have seen the field.

As mentioned earlier in another thread, classes should be rated 3-4 years later.

But, good classes on sighning day sure do feel good.

i get more upset by highly rated guys who never live up to the billing, or highly coveted guys who cause problems, then end up elsewhere. Then, you end up wondering who they could have recruited instead.

By then, many of the guys you wish for were 3 star guys that were underrated. IMO, those folk get upset, because it is their constitutionally protected, God given right.

God bless America, I guess.

This particular group seems pretty tight, and it has the feel of a class that is who these coaches want, not necessarily taking flyers on.

Cause I agree with you on the injury and retention issue.

I think the overall talent base is to a point where they won't have to take chances on some guys just to build that talent base up again.

Regardless I do think it's fair to take a wait and see approach. Its June, and its unlikely that even if they all sign, that no more than a handful will probably contribute or make significant impact on team 122...

Its also fair to acknowledge that this class is coming along very well.... And give credit where credits due.

For over the past decade Stanford has done a pretty good job with 3*'s and seen success. So, it can be done.

Could be said for anyone besides saban and Meyer.

Not true.

And here's something every Vol fan should think about....in '17 we signed 28 players - just about normal for us.

So in a normal year for us we have a roster that is 1/3 true freshmen. That's a recipe for failure.

Clemson on the other hand could only sign a class of 14 players - they had had very little attrition so their roster was stocked with experienced players. And of course they beat Bama.

Yes, but they also get some 4 stars... The main thing is Stanford Washington and Penn State, USC to name a few, all have less attrition than UT.

You forget that it took Clemson a good many of years to rid itself of the phrase "clemsoning" and Dabo wasn't that successful to begin with though he did have lesser competition besides FSU.

It wasn't until he had had enough with the negativity after a big win that everyone rallied around him. Would our negative fans rally around CBJ if he starts to turn it around or will they still look for holes, complain, and bring up the past.

Many forget that he is all heart and wants exactly what we want!! He is not our enemy or our escape goat for our own issues.

Alabama signs around 25 or so per year. It hasn't hurt them at all.

Clemson typically signs 20+ each year. Last year was a low mark for them. I suspect they will be back pushing the 25 limit this year to get back to the 85 limit of players.

there are some that no doubt would find something to complain about even with an undefeated season.

I absolutely believe this.

I also believe there are a few that will complain about anyone that expresses legitimate criticism. I've seen it.

In my opinion "some" needs to be replaced with actual names more often.
