Other Coaches' Views on Butch Jones and Our Team

What's not very good is we haven't won ten games since '07. Some of the comments are spot on irregardless of their source.

That's borderline unbelievable for a program as tradition-rich and successful as ours. It won't change until football is a priority though, starting with getting the Haslams and big boosters the hell outta here.

"I think Tennessee’s team really played hard ... I think that Derek is doing a fantastic job. They have been better and better every year that we’ve played them. We were fortunate today that our defense played well enough to keep their high-powered offense to just 13 points.”

I wouldn't put too much stock into one quote from a rival coach.

From the article:
"A part of me says Butch Jones has done a good job. A part of me says no. I think he's too concerned with what the media says than doing his job. If you win, the media doesn't matter. If you lose, everything matters. I think he gets caught up in public opinion. I think he's an insecure guy.
Totally accurate.
"Tennessee hasn't won 10 games (since 2007). No way they should go 10 years at Tennessee and not win 10-11 games. No way. That's an indictment on the coaches, the school, the president. You have the resources, the fan passion, the stadium, the financial commitment."
Totally accurate.
"When you're in your fourth year and the defense is that bad, that ain't good. The thing about Tennessee this year, they don't have a quarterback, they don't have a running back, and for all those guys they've signed, I don't see any dominant, draftable players.
There is some stuff to take issue with here. The defense, in particular the interior defensive line and linebackers, were decimated with injuries during the year. I think that's why the rush defense in particular was so bad late in the season. If the defense stays reasonably healthy and struggles like that again this year, then they have a point.

"Don't have a quarterback" is a little presumptuous. We have a guy who has been with the program for a while but hasn't played and a highly-touted redshirt freshman. Lots of teams have been in that position with a QB before and have gone on to had good seasons. I would be surprised if neither Dormady or Guarantano had at least a decent year.

As for "don't have a running back," I think John Kelly will be just fine.

As for not having any dominant, draftable guys among the players "we've signed," I'm not sure exactly which signees this person is talking about. Guys we signed this past recruiting class? Trey Smith looks like he could be a great player. Chandler, Gray, Crosby, and Ignont look like they could be good players. Some of those 3-star guys could go on to be good players. If he's talking about guys we've signed since Butch has been here, not sure what he's referring to since Tennessee has put several guys in the NFL who have been recruited by Butch.

We've seen somewhat limited, but encouraging, work from John Kelly.

We know nothing of Dormady in a game situation.

The way it was phrased is poor, but not that far off of reality.

We don't know what we have.

Saban lied his tail off and I understand his strategy.

But those quotes on CBJ.....are truff!

I wouldn't put too much stock into one quote from a rival coach.

Especially quotes that have no basis in fact, like this quote from Saban.

I think you can be discerning about what you hear in anonymous quotes. The anonymity allows people to be more honest but also encourages them to dress it up a little bit.

I think the points about Butch's insecurity and poor leadership at the University leading to no 10-win seasons since 2007 are spot on. You probably aren't going to get that out of a rival coach on the record, but the points are totally valid. However, whoever said we have no RB simply doesn't knowledge of the roster.

yawn. what, 4th article about anonymous coaches commenting negatively on Tennessee....stop the presses. what do you think they're going to say? they're recruiting against us.

some of it is, or has been, true. some of it is just pure negative recruiting.

at this point, i just don't care what anyone else says. good or bad, it's all bee out there for everyone to see, comment on etc....

he either gets it done or he doesn't. what any of this commentary we've seen over the past month says, really doesn't matter at this point. the competition thinks there's blood in the water, so why not try to kill it? others, who live in glass houses, would probably either rather be left out of the fray, or deflect attention elsewhere.

it just doesn't matter.

Who cares what other people say? You cannot win when you listen to the critics. We could have a perfect season with a national championship, and there will still be people talking trash. It's garbage

I agree with your premise. I posted this for open dialogue and entertainment purposes. Nothing wrong with discussing opinions on these comments.

no, there isn't. just getting old. it's been, what, 3 weeks since the last one, where coaches were saying they're surprised he's still here, and that he should be a on short leash....

meh. discuss as you wish...

Unfortunately Jake, it's either discussing topics like these or recruiting ad nauseum. Otherwise the off-season would seem much longer than it does already. I do understand where you're coming from though, I just found these comments to be pretty hilarious honestly.

Ummm, if Haslem and 'big boosters' leave UT we will not have the facilities or $$$ to compete in the SEC.

That's absolute horse crap. However, you are taking my comment way too literally. By "getting them out" I mean stop letting them make every decision with the wave of a checkbook. The problems with UT athletics fall directly on the shoulders of the Haslam family and associated boosters.

i guess so. agree about the off season...but this one seems particularly long, when we're just regurgitating the same "anonymous" content.

it's literally beating a dead horse at this point.

i'm to the point now i don't even care about the stuff i agree with.

Personally don't care what other anonymous "coaches"
think about UT. Does not change, help or hurt anything.
Recruits do not seem to believe any of that stuff. Fans have their own thoughts that appear to me to be way more accurate.

Impossible to know to what extent recruits believe negative recruiting. Even if you are landing lots of highly touted guys, you might have lost other highly touted guys because of it.

A rival coach anonymously trash talking? Oh the horror!

Im disappointed though. Here I thought we had 2 really good options (both will be better than Dobbs imo) at QB and a RB that averaged over 6ypc last year and now im finding out we dont have a QB OR a RB and our defense will be bad.

Just cancel the season I guess.

very much doubt they perform better then dobbs. and thats not a knock on either QB i think they both can be good ones

I think Butch has the same feelings for the media as he does for the Refs. He just don't care for them much. I think it's because his Daddy was a Cop.

I hope they perform better than Dobbs did on his first start. It was not pretty. However, he grew as his playing time increased and he finished very good, except for SC and Vandy last year. He also had farther to go than I think the two guys competing will have. If either one can finish as well as Dobbs did, I will be very pleased.
