a STUPID, crazy first big decision by Currie. Winterbotham is a good coach in a strong conference. We were in the NCAA championship match in 2010. We've always been competitive. The last two years have not been great--but he would have got us back near the top of the conference. We have coaches who should be axed--starting with Warlick and Patrick (our volleyball coach, who can't recruit)--but Winterbotham shouldn't have been among them. You can't sack this guy and leave Warlick alone--that is bull$hit. I've already got a bad feeling that Currie doesn't know what he's doing.
You mean like Fulmer but not Jones right? Won a Naty and a couple of SEC titles then lucked into a few more SEC Title games with the help of other teams losing to propel us in occasionally. But not Jones....who is rebuilding a dumpster fire...underachieved...but is trending upward after a few seasons.

DeMoss is not going to work with Warlick. DeMoss was the Summitt's top assistant for 15 years, during which time UT won most of its national championships. Warlick was the second or third assistant during that time--not much responsibility. Before coming to Tennessee, DeMoss was first women's BB coach at Florida, and then after her long stint at Tennessee she was the head coach at Kentucky for four years, during which time she beat Summitt and the Vols once. She invigorated a bad Kentucky program but after four years abruptly resigned for reasons that are not entirely clear. Soon after, she got hired as asst. at Texas and then after another few years came back to Tennessee, by which time Warlick was the top assistant here. DeMoss was FAR more qualified to succeed Summitt than Warlick. If anyone should have got the job, it was her. But Summitt and Warlick had got tight during DeMoss's years away, and PS wanted Warlick to have the gig, despite having ZERO head-coaching experience and not even that much experience as top assistant. Big mistake.

Warlick is a classic example of the Peter Principle. I think PS made a personal decision about her successor and not a professional one--given that DeMoss had twice been a head coach at SEC schools. But then PS was also ill at the time. I'm sure DeMoss was royally insulted when Warlick got the job, and understandably so given the huge gap between her experience and Warlick's. There was no comparison. DeMoss jot jobbed--and left UT immediately after Warlick was given the job--as she should have. She's been at LSU for the last few years.

This jives with what I heard behind the scenes as well. Pat produced far too many great women's coaches for the UT program to be what Warlick has let it become. I could handle DeMoss, Staley, and others with a Vol pedigree running the program. Warlick may be a decent person and a decent cioach, but we require excellence for Lady Vol basketball and Warlick has not nor will be able to produce it.She needs to be gone asap IMO.

Staley does not have a Vol pedigree to best of my knowledge.

Lol this tennis coach had more success than the football coach. Seems maybe like the AD isn't so good after all.

I agree that was a strange place to start when there is low hanging fruit all over the place

I think the ever abrasive Currie was asserting himself here. Felt he was justified in firing the head coach of a non-revenue sport....while sending a clear message to the head coaches of the money-making/high profile sports, 3 (Warlick, Serrano, Jones) of whom are currently underachieving.

Where might that fruit be?

Barnes? Not really
Holly? Not with the #1 class coming in
Butch? I have to laugh
Serano? Mid-Season

So where is this low hanging fruit?

So I assume you believe Fulmer should still be coach of the football team then because he won a NC?

You are using different criteria for different coaches. What is is? Overall record? Placement in the conference? You can't compare the level of success for these two coaches and fire Warlick and keep the Tennis coach.

By your criteria you would keep a coach until they hit rock bottom just because they had previous success to a level of your liking. Or you keep a coach just because that coach has coached one individual that has done really well even though the team as a whole sucks wind.

i love how armchair hasn't responded to this post of yours... many people think same way as him. they change the manner in which they are judging success to fit their narrative and some can't even see that they are doing it.

The irony is deep with this one.

8 win seasons not to long ago drew a different reaction.

And here tennis made a genius.

A comparison - the last 3 years tennis has been 13-14, 12-17 and 14-13. Over the last two years they have won 3 out of 24 conference games.

Warlick has not had a losing season. Her teams have finished 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 7th and 6th in the SEC. She had several big wins this year (SC, Miss ST, Notre Dame) that show she may have the team heading back up. Sorry but if you let her go - you let almost all coaches go.

I don't follow tennis so I don't know how good or bad of a coach he is - but just by records between these two Warlick would not be the one to fire.

Actually, I think they are called "conference matches"; not 'conference games'.

Not to be all nit-picky like.

I'll be very surprised if the job doesn't go to assistant coach Chris Woodruff. He's been the top assistant here for a long time--12 or more years--and he is a former UT singles national champion--the only one we've had. By all accounts he's a good coach, and there is no reason to think he can't do a good job. Like most of these jobs, and it is particularly true with tennis, success hinges on recruiting. I think he'll get the position.
This is the best comment you have made so far. Grew up playing with Chris and he deserves the job. He has the fire and is fiercely competitive. You may be right with Holly but all our athletics are struggling. Chris played at UT when we were dominant across all athletics and this change is a great place to start.

I would say I am sad this happened but the program really hasn't been where it should considering where we were 5-10 years ago. It has been in a downward turn for awhile, like most of UT's sports.

I have always enjoyed going to matches and following the team but it hasn't been worth it the past few years. I know they have had some stuff to deal with, such as the death of a player that happened a few years ago. I don't know if the team is just vey young, or the talent isn't there, but almost going winless for 2 years in SEC play is unacceptable

Freak, why is there no forum for that encompasses all the other UT sports? Individually, they don't need their own forums, but if you lop them all together, it would make sense, imo.
