Trump: Reverses Position on NATO

Does anyone know where this man really stands on anything? He may tweet tomorrow that he never said what he just now said and Spicer will double down.

Who cares. Stop letting it keep you awake at night. :birgits_giggle:

The real anger toward Trump is going to come in a couple more years, when it becomes obvious that those "middle America" jobs he promised to bring back aren't coming back.

Most of the people who voted for him don't really know or care about his position on NATO or China and currency manipulation. That's way too inside baseball. Trump voters voted for him for one of two reasons (or both):

- The economy they once knew went away, and he said he'd bring it back
- They hated Hillary Clinton

I would add the ending/slowing of illegal immigration to your list

Who cares.

I'm guessing this is going to be the go to response as the cold hard reality of his gross negligence and inability to govern slowly washes over the sycophants.

"We didn't really like him..... Who cares?"

Who will they blame when automation really starts taking a toll on their jobs???

Trump supporters only care about that insofar as illegal immigrants "take jobs."

If the jobs they once had come back, there could be no slowdown in illegal immigration, no wall, etc., and I don't think they'd care. If Trump kept every promise on illegal immigration but the jobs didn't return, they'd still be upset. People vote with their pocketbooks.

This is the kind of comment you see right before Trump supporters start throwing in the towel

Nah... I'm going with the "who cares" line.

It feigns a disinterested detachment. Because they absolutely care, yet can no longer make a cogent argument of support - and they know it.

So did the UK, Canada, Poland, the Netherlands, Belguim, France, and others. The point you are attempting to make doesn't apply to this subject.

It absolutely applies. And to your list outside of Canada and the UK the rest were crushed and had to be bailed out by US treasure and lives.

Western Europe is free for one reason and one reason only, the USA. It's time they started footing more of the bill for their own defense.

Who will they blame when automation really starts taking a toll on their jobs???

I would imagine the usual suspects they already blame now: immigration, bad trade deals, etc. Of course neither of those things have anything to do with automation, but it won't matter.

It is absolutely true that the economy has changed over the last 30-50 years in a way that has left large segments of the population behind. Trump won the election because he was good at telling people in those segments what they wanted to hear.

The harsh reality is that there isn't really a "problem" to "fix." There is just a new reality that you have to adapt to, and that is difficult because it means things like having to relocate and learning new skills. It is much more comforting to hear and believe something like "A trade deal designed to benefit foreigners hung you out to dry. I'll renegotiate it and get your job back."

True...

"But Hillary..." and "But Obama..." have been going on for a while, this was just especially pathetic effort.

"Who cares" is a totally new one.

Yeah, I have feeling that those who are still beating that "bbbbuuuutttt obama/clinton" drum are in too deep to stop now, may as well keep riding that train.

Look at Trump, three months in and he's still bleating about his general election victory. Though in retrospect, that was the last time he came out ahead...

Wouldn't that cover just about any president... hasn't been one worth a sh$t in awhile

Haven't followed this closely but as I understand it part of his prior complaint was NATO was not focusing heavily enough on terrorism (the irrelevance) and not paying it's share that was agreed to.

NATO has ramped up it's focus on terrorism and is upping it's contribution in spending.

So it's expected somewhat that he would acknowledge NATOs changes to address his concerns.

He did a poor job of explaining his comments but as I understand it that's his rationale (whether you agree with the rationale is another matter).

The U.S. has never paid a "NATO Bill" The U.S. is the largest country in NATO with the Largest GDP. We only spend 3.2% of our GDP on defense.

It's not a bill - it's a contribution. The other NATO countries agreed to pay a % of GDP on defense to contribute and they have not been doing so.

IOW - the other NATO countries (well many of the big ones) are not living up to the agreement they made.

NPR stated yesterday, I believe, that NATO nations are asked to spend 2% and there are currently only 5 members meeting that standard.

if people like you and outerbanksgaytor start liking what he's doing, then i'd say our country is screwed yet again.

See, this is the problem right here. You will elect anything the "libs" don't like and hate everything they like, and vice versa. The political enemy is worse than any actual enemy we have.

Republicans and Democrats alike will cut off their noses to spite their faces, and they are somehow proud of it.

He couldn't get ObamaCare repealed. He was isolationist on the campaign trail, but now he's bombing Syria. Suddenly China is not a currency manipulator. Suddenly, NATO is great. Mexico isn't paying for a wall.

Congratulations Republicans, you elected a Democrat, a globalist Democrat at that. The only difference between he and Hillary Clinton is that Clinton knew what she was talking about from the get-go. He's having it crammed down his throat by the people that know what they're doing, the few of them he has around him.

There's another big difference between the two, Trump isn't nearly as corrupt. But you're right on the rest.
