Do you guys understand what "best case scenario" means? It means if EVERYTHING goes right, which includes the QB being lights out, OL being studs, Kelly going off, WR breaking out, Kongbo, Phillips and rest of DL staying healthy, Warren getting the secondary in order........ that's best case scenario and that is better than 8-4.

If all that happens we will be in the playoffs.

Don't know about y'all, but I am happy with 8-4 when I think about how it was with Dools at 5-7. But then I get depressed again when I think about UF, Mizzou, UGA and even USCe winning the east since 2010 as we have been put through the wringer as a fan base and in the media.

So here we are again. Debating what we always debate every year. Sure would be good to change the dialogue after winning the east for a change.

That's kind of what I meant. If you're not going to get a significantly better coach..then why? If you say we will get a great coach..Then who is it? Throw a realistic list out there. I don't agree that just anybody could win 8 games next year with this many very real question marks. 7-5 would really suck, and if we lose to Vandy or Kentucky...back up the truck.

Eh I half agree. Winning 8 games here with the current talent/experience level shouldn't be a difficult task for any decent coach.

Finding someone who can do that won't be difficult. But it does beg the question of why change if you don't think you're upgrading. After the 2017 season, it will still cost about $8 million to fire Butch. That's a lot of money to spend to make a change unless you know the next guy has a lot more upside than Butch.

Agreed. I just don't know who we would get that could guarantee us double digit wins every season. I think Butch is evolving as a coach and if we are patient, he will get us to where we should be. The problem is, we are a spoiled entitled fan base that won't give a man time to learn and find his way. We are already invested in the man. Sometimes the market drops but you have to stay the course to reap the long term gains.

I did a little looking into Butch's contract and apparently it has offsetting language for the $2 million/year we'd owe him in addition to his $2 million buyout. Any University or NFL assistant or head coaching job he takes would qualify to offset.

So I was wrong about it costing $8 million to make a change. In theory it could end up being as little as $2 million total and would likely end up costing $4 million or less over 3 years if he gets a HC job somewhere else (which I think he could).

So that changes my thinking slightly insomuch as I think it makes it more possible for Currie to make a change if he really wants to.

But I do think that, barring a meltdown in 2017, it's wiser to give Butch another season in 2018. The only concern there is whether Butch would try to play the market to get another extension coming off another 8-4 type season.

With him being under contract through 2020, I'm not sure he deserves an extension unless he wins the east or 10 games or a NY6 Bowl or something like that. Otherwise, giving him 2018 as a year to prove it (we don't stand to lose TOO much heading into 2018 unless this year's team over performs and a bunch of underclassmenf jump to the NFL off of a really big season) and deciding whether to extend him or move on in December of 2018 seems like the most fiscally prudent move.

More buzz on Dobbs rising draft stock. This time from notorious Dobbs hater Matt Miller (of Bleacher Report) who had Josh as an undrafted free agent before the senior bowl. I know KBVol remembers that since he gleefully paraded around that tweet as proof that Dobbs would not get drafted high this year in the draft.

Dobbs went through a throwing session, and a coach at the workout texted me that he "is one of my favorite [quarterbacks] in this class." Dobbs has a legitimate chance to be a top-100 pick. NFL scouts continue to rave about his football IQ, character and work ethic.

It will never be cheaper than $8 million. Ever.

If he's fired by us he's not getting a HC that pays a lot.

If he is retained he will need an extension which means his buyout will go up again.

If we don't give him some sort of extention then recruiting will suffer. Recruits will see it as a sign that they will likely be dealing with someone else and look elsewhere for more stability. Surely we can find a way to extend him without increasing the buyout.

Well I just hope we win double digit games and the east and make a high quality bowl. Then the point is moot.

Butch isn't going anywhere until it cost UT more to keep him than his buyout. As long as fans continue to purchase season tickets and buy popcorn, they could go 5-7 and he'll still be here. It's always a financial decision. The UT administration always takes Volunteer fans for granted. Always will.

This circle of life drill between Trey and Kongbo is pure awesome

That is a senior in high school vs a senior in college.

If he struggles to win 8 after 5 years on the job he's clearly not a championship caliber coach in this league IMO. If he wins less than that I could see Currie pulling the trigger.

So, did popcorn stocks go way down under Dooley?

Well I've got news for them.... I don't buy their popcorn. I prefer Petro's.
