Kind of like how we almost lost to App State and people on here were talking about them being a top 25 team until Miami went to Boone and curb stomped them.
yeah, watching Miami pummel them in Boone was a little depressing. but iirc, isn't that the only 2 games they lost? app didn't suck.Kind of like how we almost lost to App State and people on here were talking about them being a top 25 team until Miami went to Boone and curb stomped them.
Talented roster, great facilities, great fan base, SEC.....and $4mm annual salary. Strongly disagree. It'd be a very attractive job for some high level coaches. Now, I seriously doubt the blithering idiots in charge over there would come close to hiring the right guy, but I think there would be plenty of top coaches interested in the job.

The blithering idiots are far more likely keep an underperforming coach until the roster is once again at critical mass and falling.
Most of the people arguing that Jones will survive whether they think he should or shouldn't often overlook this critical component. Jones' recruiting has predictably tapered off due to the bad losses and failures to win the East or optimize talent. The '18 class will hinge on Jones' performance this fall. If the difference between landing and not landing a top class appears to be Jones as on the field performance... he's gone. He has to be.
There seems to be a strange thing occurring in this thread..
If we underperform with Butch in 17 but keep him to 18, we lose the 18 talent.
If we bail on Butch during the regular season, we lose the 18 talent.
This thread got dark: damned no matter what we do.
Eight wins and Butch hangs around. We lost a lot, but Florida's defense is graduating, Georgia's offensive line will be inexperienced. The East will come down to the big three, with the others ruining someone's season along the way.
Of course Butch might pull out 10 wins, sign a top ten recruiting class in 18, and beat Muschamp and Vandy. That will work best for me.
That is not a "true" statement. It is a conditional statement. Fire Jones if he underperforms and hire some mid-major nobody... Yeah, class probably won't be very good. Fire Jones and get a solid replacement... and the instate guys with UT loyalty will be on board. Those that aren't "Orange" inside... aren't guarantees no matter what happens. (Witness the top TN recruits that said no to Jones this year)There seems to be a strange thing occurring in this thread..

I think 8 is the boundary... If that's where he lands, I think it will matter who he lost to for the 4th loss. If it is someone like Vandy then I think he's in big trouble. I'm not sure how long it has been since UT had a 5 year coach with a losing record vs Vandy.... if ever.Eight wins and Butch hangs around. No doubt. I get accused of "hating" Jones. I don't. I'm just not impressed by him so far. I would love for the new staff to have the talent and cohesion to make Jones successful. If so, I hope he has learned how to assemble an SEC caliber staff.Of course Butch might pull out 10 wins, sign a top ten recruiting class in 18, and beat Muschamp and Vandy. i think the percption that recruiting will take a hit is just that, percption. ...
time will tell, but i don't think a 7-5 year automatically = bad class.

It doesn't help UT to go through another coaching change... it just hurts them even more to keep an underperforming coach.
There are no "automatics". There's always a chance of some strange and unpredictable factors coming into play. But it really isn't just perception either. It is history. Coaches with success have an obvious advantage. New HC's like Jones once was have an excitement advantage. Coaches that have pretty much established themselves as 2nd tier... fight over what's left... which isn't good enough to win championships. Jones has not proven to be a coach who can take that kind of talent and "coach it up" to championship contention. Just the opposite.
Another way of saying it is that a 5 year coach with a 500 or worse SEC record gives opposing recruiters WAY more than enough ammo to successfully negative recruit.
UT has won 6 national titles and is second only behind Alabama in terms of SEC championships. UT is also a top 10 program in terms of total wins and losses and is way up there in bowl wins and appearances. We are also one of a very elite group of teams that has never lost 8 games in a season. What universe are you living in?Alot of you guys are talking like this is the 90's again and Bama is swapped where Florida was and we should be competing with them. The SEC is totally different now and we are not a historical juggernaut nor do we have the tradition of Bama, Ohio St, Michigan, Notre Dame etc.

I am not going to worry about any coaching hot seats or changes, any worst case scenarios, or even recruiting beyond what we just finished. Zero hand-wringing here.
I choose to follow UT football because I enjoy it and its fun and I am proud to be a Tennesseean.
Every new season is a fresh one, and there will be awesome plays that I will enjoy. The unexpectedness of what 18 and 19-yr olds might do, and how an odd shaped football will bounce only adds to the wide-eyed thrill of it.
So looking forward to this fall. Just like I do every year.
