Does JGs throwing motion seem a bit long to anyone else? IMO he's got a wind-up pitcher throw. In comparison, also IMO, QD has a catchers "get rid of the ball quickly" throw.

You are correct. However, JG is not slow letting it fly, which compensates for the longer motion. Canales should be able to help with this.

I hope so because if he gets the nod that long motion could equal strip sacks

On Butch: I wish it did not take 4 years and a lot of flak to realize what he needed to do with everything. However, I could not be more pleased now. The negative losers and Eeyores are gone from the staff and players. It takes total commitment and unity. These side field trip commentaries by Butch were serious distractions, especially to recruiting. He thought he was deflecting criticism from his guys and all he was doing was adding fuel for the media to use against him. Just coach them up and win. Let the results speak for you.

Like BrB, the first time I saw A-Smith on the highlights I thought there is a future NFL LB. With injuries and missed evaluation by the coaching staff, he lost a year of development at his natural position. Looks like that may be fixed now. Sounds like they may be waking up on Gaulden as well and his days at nickel last season may have been beneficial to help his play with coverage at S going forward. He could even play the box S in certain situations. At least they didn't stick him on offense last season like they did Byrd. J-Johnson has been in way over his head since he hit campus. Don't look for much barring a major football awakening.

I agree. The lack of a real QB coach, regardless of who it might have been, hurt our QB's development. Jake is good at it, but had the OC role as a priority. Debord was not and could not be a QB coach. Using a GA was dumb for the most important position on the field. Having Canales addresses that. Throwing motion adjustments are a normal part of that job. Something JG can also work on in the off season.

Hate that I understand SOME of Bruin's point here (your Jakob theory is wack), and I think A.Smith can be a really good LB for us, but man we are razor thin at DE now. It's pretty much Kongbo, Phillips, & Taylor. I just figured since he worked there throughout the fall, Smith could have been in the rotation, but we really need McDaniel, D.Johnson, or Blakely to step it up this spring and earn some playing time.

I think Butch is really looking forward to this season. IMO he knows his job is safe regardless of what happens (save a total disaster) and that he's probably looking at a year where it will be viewed that he/his team overachieved. Perhaps he knows the OL will be incredibly stout and the offense won't miss a beat with JG/QD and Kelly running the show.

Plus, he has survived a year where the Vols were squarely in the spotlight for the first 7 weeks of the season (near disaster vs App State, biggest football game ever, first win vs UF in 11 years, Hail Mary vs UGA, dramatic OT game vs A&M, and then getting slaughtered by Bama). That's rough on a coach with a fanbase as starved for success as Tennessee and a local/national media that was ready to pounce on any missteps.

In 2017, no one will really be paying attention to Tennessee. The spotlight in the East will be on Georgia. Perfect year to sneak into Atlanta or finish with a double digit win total.

It is amazing what having a dedicated QB coach can do.

By all accounts this was the most prepared and best looking QB unit for day 1 of camp.

And you just lost your senior leader.

Totally agree and unfortunately I have a feeling we will need both of them this year. If JG does win the starting gig, I just don't' see him making it without an injury leading to some down time.
My worry is Butch names JG the starter and QD immediately transfers and then JG sustains an injury..

Watching all the first day highlights, QD just looks the part of a starting quarterback right now. He's calm and throws a beautiful ball with very little effort. He's my starting QB if I had to choose at this moment. I have a feeling this will change in the coming weeks. Guarantano looks great but very anxious and will need to relax. Where he will shine is when pads come on and defensive lineman start chasing him.
