John Currie of K State Hired as AD

Wait, he's a better candidate just by virtue of having the job and not getting fired? Blackburn has actually elevated his program; Currie hired Bruce Weber.

Weber was the dude who almost coached a perfect season at Illinois and lost in the championship game? Wonder what made Currie go that direction? Blackburn hired what was available at UTC's level...more margin for error IMO.

Weber followed one of the best coaches in America, succeeded at the very beginning of his tenure, and then fell off a cliff. As an AD that should tell you something. His resume was a worse version of Larry Coker's

.675 winning percentage coach with 20 wins the season before 17 OR take a flyer on an assistant at VCU. Different hiring criteria for two different level programs.

it's going to be interesting. this may be a good reason not to renew my season tickets this year.

Brice on Basilio show said he's received tons of tweets and texts from people who are not happy with this hire.

For real?

He had gone 17-15 and missed the tournament (actually, all tournaments) the season before, and had only been to the NCAA Tournament twice in five years. I don't disagree with your last sentence, but Weber was pretty obviously bad.

I actually was surprised by how well he did at K-State in his first year, but that's what following good coaches will do for you.

Seriously? It MAY be a good reason not to renew your season tix THIS year?

I mean, how will you know? What's your criteria between now and the April renewal deadline? That he loses his introductory press conference? He wears the wrong shade of orange tie?

"Yep, gave up my football seats cause I hear unhappy things about our new AD." Are you gonna go with that?

Hahahaha you're considering not renewing season tickets because of the hiring of an administrator that you know nothing about? Good riddance drama queen.

Someone besides Texas-San Antonio should take a shot on Larry Coker, though, because one good year followed by several bad ones is apparently a strong resume now.

Or Fulmer. Weird how no one wants those guys, but Currie hiring a less-accomplished version is apparently a great decision.

Actually, don't make fun of him. He might just be the guy behind me at the games complaining about every play we run. Let's encourage him to do the "right" thing and give up those tickets.

I noted the 17 wins in my post and that it followed other 20 win seasons. Yeah he faded but his star had ascended since his highly successful Southern Illinois days. Any responsible AD (with a choice) picks that body of work over a young career assistant. UTC is the type of program that can gamble on such...and that's what Blackburn did successfully. Huge difference at the next level.

Yeah...because Bruce Weber had only coached two seasons.

That's just not true. Maybe it's what you would do, but you can't say that any good AD would pick a guy who has proven he's not very good, just because he's "proven something." I'd rather have an unknown than a guy that I know sucks.

Michigan State is a much better program and promoted an assistant. UConn too. K-State would be in a much better place if they just did the same thing with Brad Underwood

Michigan State promoted Jud Heathcoate's TOP ASSISTANT. Connecticut promoted Jim Calhoun's TOP ASSISTANT. Key points (and pay attention) FROM WITHIN a NC winning coach 's program! The only way this would be relevant to our conversation is if Wade was a TOP ASSISTANT to a comparatively successful coach at UTC.

It is no secret that my name was mentioned as a possible candidate, but I didnt interview w/ the new chancellor or the committee - Blackburn

A prolonged downward trend apparently doesn't mean anything to you, but to "any responsible AD," it should. There's no way around it

Sure there is. Discounting Weber's success at Southern Illinois and Illinois purely because of a 17 win season is idiocy in gaseous form. Coaches either continue a downward trend or reenergize and reinvent in a new environment. Was a worthy bet and better odds than a midmajor program's unproven assistant. Worst case for Blackburn in his scenario is that it doesn't work out.

In the end, despite all the details, it comes down to perception.

Blackburn is perceived to make sports teams perform really well and Currie is perceived to make the bottom line balance really well.

The reaction on a sports site was a foregone conclusion.

That still wouldn't be relevant to our conversation, as I'm saying (and pay attention) that Bruce Weber was a terrible hire. That has nothing to do with Will Wade. Currie could have hired plenty of coaches who were actually good coaches rather than Weber.

Hell, Frank Martin himself was a promoted assistant, and then you're turning around and saying you can't promote assistants at a place like K-State.

"Prolonged" is where you tumbled out of the boxcar. :) 24,21 and 20 wins in the Big 10? In the Southern Conference that lands you the VCU job.

I'm still undecided on how I feel about the hire. That aside, I just don't understand that. I'm sure there is a reason, but I would love to know, for sure, what it was. I mean, damn.

From WITHIN THE PROGRAM after being the TOP ASSISTANT after following Bob Huggins to Manhattan for a one and done? Huggins was a hugely successful iconic coach, so have a conversation with me when you wake up. :)

You must still be hung up on Wade or something, because you seem to be missing the point that Brad Underwood was an assistant within the program when Currie hired Weber instead.
